Child Obesity

...Childhood Obesity Eng. 122 English Composition II Professor: Mary Lounsbury Due date: 9/19/2011 By: Tiara Isom I strongly believe that parents are to blame in most cases dealing with childhood obesity. With that being said, childhood obesity is my topic. I chose this particular topic just because it was the most interesting to me, of the topics we had to choose from. I find research papers to be easier when you are interested in what you are writing about. Although, I do not have any personal experience with this topic, I do believe that this issue is a big problem in today’s society and I would not dare let my kids be in that statistic. I will refine/ limit my topic by breaking it down into three main points. I plan on creating an outline with an introduction, body and conclusion. The body of my outline will have three main bullets of cause, statistics and prevention. I will then list three to five main things I want to cover under each bullet. After these steps I plan to back up my opinions with proper research. In some cases, genetics could be the cause of larger children, but the definition of obesity is more than average fatness so to be obese there has to be some poor eating habits. I plan to argue the causes of childhood obesity, mainly poor parenting. In my opinion, the parents of obese children are to blame for childhood obesity. I believe this because our children only do what we allow them to. The lack of attention, poor upbringing, and the selection of...

...effect on student achievement. The researcher sought to answer two research questions “Does differentiated instruction have an impact on student achievement?” and “Are there components of differentiated instruction that have a greater impact on student achievement than others?” The study followed a mixed method design and consisted of two parts. First, a quantitative analysis of test scores from the Michigan Education Assessment Program (MEAP) and teacher and student survey results were analyzed as a means to outline broad relationships from the data. Results from the quantitative findings directed the researcher on how to frame the qualitative design. Second, a qualitative analysis of classroom observations and interviews with teachers was conducted. The qualitative portion of this study followed a social interactionism orientation adopted by social interactionism theorist (Blumer, 1969). This approach allowed the researcher to analyze relationships between the differentiation variables. The quantitative data methods of surveys and test scores, qualitative techniques of classroom observations, and teacher interviews were triangulated. Triangulation of data was used to support research findings through independent measures to point to the same conclusions (Webb et al., 1965). The conceptual framework (Hall, 2004) served as the foundation in the identification of the differentiation variables to be studied. The research findings supported the work of learning styles theorists (Dunn...

Never Judge a Book by Its Cover

...would say that when asked to visualize a person with tattoos their first thoughts would be of criminals, sailors, bikers, or gangsters. Not anymore! Tattoos have become culturally acceptable in today’s society. They have a rich history that dates back to 2000 B.C. before any kind of negative stigma was formed. Because of that stigma, however, tattoos and people with tattoos have developed a bad reputation. Many concerns such as the procedure, health risks and career complications are what have caused some of the negativity towards tattoos. In today’s society these are no longer the case and thus, the art has become mainstream. The act of tattooing started in early civilizations and was most evident in ancient Egypt. The Egyptians’ wall writing showed evidence of the body being used as a canvas around 2000 B.C. (“All About the”). Throughout many different cultures tattoos are used as a part of their religious practices. A tattoo can represent ones authority or a particular responsibility within the practice. However, during biblical times, tattoos were considered an act of mythological worship. Some experts believe that Moses viewed tattoos a little differently, viewing them as a way to commemorate devotion rather than paganism worship. Years later, during the Roman Empire, slaves and criminals began to bare tattoos causing them to develop a negative connotation. They were also used negatively to brand Jews during the Holocaust. Nowadays the process of tattooing is used for aesthetics...

Death and Aging

...Running head: DEATH AND AGING: FEARING THE PROCESS 1 Death and Aging: Fearing the Process Aimmie Jenkins Liberty University DEATH AND AGING: FEARING THE PROCESS 2 Abstract The purpose of this study is to outline the fears, if any, that people have in regards to death and aging. Through theoretical research, aspects are explored to determine if people fear death or just the manner in which they will die, and if people fear aging or the effects of aging. Does the lack of faith in a higher power correlate with the fear of dying? Do people fear dying, the manner of death, or the unknown? Does one fear wrinkles, declining agility, and memory loss, or aging itself? Steps will be outlined for those that may fear death, to calm and educate them on death and aging. DEATH AND AGING: FEARING THE PROCESS 3 It is often said that as a culture, America has Gerascophobia, or the fear of aging. Fear that causes so much anxiety, which motivates some to seek anti-aging surgery and procedures. America is so consumed with looking young. In fact, in 2012, America spent over 11 Billion dollars on plastic surgery, alone. Wanting to look young is nothing new. The search for some magical ‘Fountain of Youth’ has been going on for centuries. Men...
