In any collage class a student is handed a syllabus and is expected to read it on the first day. Some students will use this document for the rest of the semester to find the expectations for themselves and professors of the class. This genre of writing is used to lay out class expectations, any major polices that they school or teacher may have, and the major assignments in the class along with how they are graded.
According to my Introduction to Statistics Syllabus college students are expected to show up to class on time and to turn in all work on time. Students are expected to participate in class and to respect both the teacher and their peers. This is euphuized because college students come from all different backgrounds and no two are alike. If a student does not feel welcomed in a class or feels that others do not allow them to have a supportive learning space they will not interact in the class. One is also expected to go and get help if they are struggling. This is important because to be successful you must actively seek out what you need. This is important so that the student knows what to expect from the class and can talk to the professor if they feel that they are not learning what they need to. Professors must be willing to help the students in their class. My professor, like all those at Fort Lewis College, has office hours and clearly states here office location and what times she will be there. She also has time when she must work in the Algebra alcove and at both times she is willing to work with any students. This holds her accountable to helping her students along with getting to know
