Identify the differences between summary, analysis, synthesis, and evaluation paragraphs Identify the content in writing paragraphs Demonstrate how audience and tone influence content Apply purpose, audience, tone, and content to a specific assignment

Imagine reading a poorly written review of a movie that you would like to see this weekend. You cannot follow the characters, action, or conflict because the author of the review rambles on and on. Without clear paragraphs, this review will likely lose your interest, and you may skip the movie altogether! When you are the writer, it is helpful to position yourself as a reader. Ask yourself whether you can focus easily on each point you make. Effective writers use a single paragraph for each new idea they introduce. Paragraphs separate ideas into logical, manageable, and distinct units. Each paragraph focuses on only one main idea and presents coherent sentences to support that single point. Because all the sentences in one paragraph support the same point, a paragraph may stand on its own. Each paragraph is shaped by Purpose: the reason why the writer composes the paragraph. < Tone: the attitude the writer conveys about the paragraph’s subject. < Audience: the individual or group whom the writer intends to address. < Content: the written material in the paragraph.

WRITING FOR SUCCESS

To create longer assignments and to discuss more than one point, writers group together paragraphs and link them together with transitions. The assignment’s purpose, audience, and tone dictate the content, which determines what paragraphs cover and how each will support a main point. The main point of the paragraph is the message you want to share with the

Design Liability

...Design Responsibility under Design and Construct Contracts: Some issues for Principals Introduction There are a number of reasons design and construct (D&C) contracts are attractive to principals and lenders. There is a single point of responsibility for both design and construction aspects of the project, the principal is able to fast track the project although not all aspects of the construction are complete, there is greater certainty of price and the contractor is involved from the earliest stage in planning design and programming. In consequence, the principal will need to accept a higher price for the contractor to take on this additional risk compared to more traditional construct only contracts. This paper will identify some issues for principals to consider when allocating design responsibility to contractors within a D&C project. These issues arise as the design and construct process involves a fundamental conflict of interest. Principals desire to have constructed a product of the best quality for the lowest possibly price. The contractor on the other hand is more likely to make a higher profit if the product is of a lower quality (and therefore cost) and a higher price (as opposed to costs). In addition, although a greater proportion of design risk is placed on the contractor, this passing of risk is often accompanied by the abrogation of responsibility and loss of control. The paper will refer to the approaches of 3 standard form contracts -...

Training and Development

...JoAnn Stewart MGT-435 Scott Lawyer April 18, 2006 Who Am I? In writing a paper about myself all thoughts that come to my mind are totally vain. I want to use all the descriptive adjectives that I can possibly thank of, and embellish on any good features that I have. I thought about all the awards that I had won in high school and gotten at church and thought surely I must let everyone know about these. I pondered how well I dress and thought this is a must read issue. I gave a lot of thought to my good looks and thought I certainly can incorporate this in my paper. Then I looked into the mirror and asked myself, who are you, really and the answer came back to me. I am someone that wears many different hats. Some are quite perplexed but most are just that of the average guy, Average, that’s one word I never use in describing myself, for I always think of me as very extraordinary. So I decided to share with the world who I really am. It is amazing that when asked, “who am I” the first thing that comes to mind is “what am I”. So often we define ourselves by the “what’s” (job title, social status, degrees and accolades, etc.) rather than the “who’s” (believer in Jesus Christ, loving mother, dedicated to meeting the needs of friends and love ones). When beginning this assinment the major things that came to mind were the what’s rather than who and what are my worldviews? For me it took a lot of thought and examination to really determine “Who Am I”. This paper will...

...positive definition one can make of "what it is." We as humans are aware that we have the freedom to choose but this is a decision made possible by our own free will and freedom. "Bad faith" is the paradoxical free decision to deny to ourselves this inescapable freedom. As humans we are consciously aware of who we are and aware of what we are. However "Bad faith" offers the free decision to deny ourselves of this freedom. Sartre cites a café waiter, whose movements and conversation are a little too keenly. He is eager to please and he carries the food solidly and impressively, "his movement is quick and forward, a little too precise, a little too rapid". His exaggerated behavior demonstrates that he is acting as a waiter, and as though his purpose in life is to simply be a waiter. He is obviously acting that lie and is aware that he is not just a waiter, but is rather consciously deceiving himself as a waiter. Sartre believes that this is "bad faith."...

...Purpose Of Life About ten years ago I was working so much I forgot about my health, family and friends. Somewhere along the road of shooting to become a successful business owner I lost track of what was most important. My dream somehow turned into a reality of being stressed out, and unhappy. It finally hit me...... Work had become my life's purpose. Like so many other entrepreneurs, I started my business for a chance at freedom and opportunity to be the master of my own destiny. I had visions of success and money, and with that I believed I could one day finally be happy. But the reality was I was not happy. I was miserable. I won't bare you with business concepts, but there is one important concept I learned that changed my life and I want to share it with you. All great companies have four things: purpose, vision, mission and care values. I asked myself, why can't I apply these ideas to my life? So I did, and here's how you can apply it to. Your life's purpose is the reason why you exist. It's the reason for being. Let me ask you again, because it's in my humble opinion, the most important question you could ever ask yourself – why do you exist? In the past, if you asked me what my life's purpose was – I would have told you it was to make lots of money. Believe me, there's nothing wrong with making money, but for myself, I finally realized it was not the reason why I exist. It was only an enabler at best. Finding your life's purpose is very much about...

Purpose of Brochure

...Purpose of Brochure The main purpose of the brochure is to inform potential customers about the business, and what sorts of products they sell. Panel 1 – This panel is essentially the most significant as it is the first part of the brochure that potential customers will see. Panel 1 contains a small amount of text, with four images and a bold, eye-catching WordArt title. I feel that it is purposeful because the images represent the products which are sold within the shop, and the text offers a brief overview of what sorts of products the shop sells. Panel 2 – The purpose of Panel 2 is to provide the potential customers with details on how to contact the business, should they want to. It contains the address of the business, an email address, and a telephone/fax number. There is also a map of Llangollen showing where ‘Cottage Cards and Crafts’ is located. Panel 3 – It informs potential customers about the business, with minimal text so that it does not look overloaded with text (which could put people off viewing it). It also contains 3 images of Llangollen within panel 3, which are purposeful because ‘Cottage Cards & Crafts’ is located in Llangollen. Panel 4 – The purpose of panel 4 is to convey a small amount of information about lovespoons. There is also 2 images on that panel; one of lovespoons and one of a welsh dragon. They are purposeful because ‘Cottage Cards & Crafts’ sell welsh lovespoons. Panel 5 - This panel contains a combination of text and images...

What Is Organizational Design?

...needs, functions, and goals. When considering the best design, one must first define the purpose of the company. All other features of the company’s organizational methods should center around fulfilling this purpose. A company whose purpose is centered around helping others, for example, would need a very different design than a company that is technologically focused. If both companies were to utilize the same design principles, one or both would be operating well below their optimum potential. In addition to considering the purpose of the company, organizational design must also evaluate the skills and purposes of the individual employees. A creative company may thrive with a loose organizational system, ample opportunities for free brainstorming, and playful incentives. A company with more left-brained individuals may do better with a rigid, well-defined structure. Most situations will call for a unique blend of these methods. A company’s organizational design also serves to define the chain of command and division of labor within the group. It determines who each individual reports to, what various departments are responsible for, and how everyone works together. The best designs typically allow for plentiful communication both between managers and employees as well as between various divisions of the company. Many consulting firms specialize in organizational design. Their purpose is to look at a company’s performance, methodology, and...

Kambas Ng Lipunan

...The short video entitle “Kambas ng Lipunan” made me realize the true face of society and the reality we live in. I have so many questions I ask myself like “What is my purpose in life? Am I on the right path? Have I done anything to help those in need?” but until now I still don’t have the answers. The maker of the short video, Joey Velasco, shared his talent and tried to make a difference in the society through his paintings Most of us would just watch and do nothing, but one man stood up and made an impact. It really is an eye-opener for the viewers to cherish and be thankful on the blessing that we receive. While I am spending money for such nonsense things, others are dying of hunger. I was a man who did not think of the value of money for others nor have I thought how hard it was to earn it, and it was proven true when I saw the clip. They are obliged to work for them to live, instead of them going to school and have a proper education for a brighter future. I don’t know how these children handle all the pressure and burden of being a breadwinner at such a young age. But as I watched the video, I can still the smile on their faces as if they don’t have problems or that they can face any obstacle they experience. It just shows that these children still haven’t lose hope of making their lives better. I have felt this extra ordinary kind of guilt within me. I can’t explain that feeling, it seems that I am very useless for I can’t do anything to those who are less fortunate...
