Essay #1 Writing Style

Writing is a process that take practice to perfect. Like everybody, my writing has it's srenghths and weaknesses. In order to understand your writing strenghts and weaknesses, you must know your learning style.Knowing your learning style can help you learn how you think, how you work and how you write. My writing characteristics are independent, rational and concrete are my three best writing strenghths, here is three reasons why i agree. .According to my results i am a independent writer, willing to spend time thinking about a topic then able to pull ideas together easily. I have to agree, i take the term "writing is a process" seriously becuause i know it takes time to reach a destination as far as a paper is concerned.i save all my drafts which helps me see the differenece between my first draft and my final draft. Seeing that difference strenghths my reslove to spend writing one step at a time to pull together ideas.I particularly spend a lot of time on planning my piece. Planning involves deciding how I am going to organize my essay, how I am going to deliver it, and recognizing the expectations of the reader. For example, while writing my first essay on gun violence, I acknowledged that one of things I need to do is to make sure my professor doesn't fall asleep at 3 in the morning by adding subtle humor and personal examples; other than the typical responsibilities of writing an essay. My second writing strenght is rational.According to my results i tend to write logically developed, well organized essays. I agree with being a rational writer because of my ability to find evidence to support my arguments. I also try to think of all the

Writing Style

...Writing Styles Pauline Gilmore June 20, 2011 EDU 623 Dr. Norman Rose My writing style has been describe by my family and friends as middle school level. I have tried very hard to work on it. It has been one of the reasons it took me so long to pursue my graduate degree. I knew my writing was not up to par for a graduate student. I tend to write the way I speak and my grammar is worst than my eight year old sons. I can use the fact that english is not my first language, but I honestly think, I have been so used to speaking and writing in slang so much it is hard for me not to now. I knew I had to start correcting myself and be more mindful of my grammar and language once I started teaching. It is still a work in progress, I try to usually keep my messages to the parents short and simple. I also write in cursive, that way when I misspell a word it is harder to see. My research skills has not been any better. I am still learning how to cite my citations. I cannot tell the difference between MLA and APA format. I tend to have a hard time putting what I need into my own words and summarizing. I do not like writing papers, but it is unavoidable in graduate school. After reviewing the research guides and completing the avoiding plagiarism tutorial I now have a little bit of a guide to follow. My strength has always been my ability to take notes. I love to write, I tend to have a hard time summarizing, so I write everything done. When I am doing a research...

Writing Styles

...Isaiah J. O'Brien Professor Juskuv Intro to Academic Writing 25 January 2015 When it comes to writing for a class I am usually good at it. I have a very good sense on how to write and what I would like to get out onto the paper. I usually like to write about personal experiences either the good or the bad. I feel like when I write from the heart or personally its easier for the reader to connect with the writer. Especially if the reader has the same feelings toward the subject. I find that through my writing I can express myself and my ideas. I have written a couple of essays that have pertained to sports, school or even just everyday life. I feel like if you want to be great you have to go out and get it. It doesn’t just come to you. When I was younger I used to write a lot of poetry because it was a cool way to express your feelings. I was really good at it and from there on I excelled in writing courses and have a good grasp on how to write and what to write about. It is a cool feeling when you can just write about whatever and know that it’s a reality. I really enjoy when people read them too and feedback is given because it makes me better. Everyone could always use some advice and the more people you show it to the better you can get. I really would like to learn how to cut down on grammar mistakes in my writing. It seems that spelling and grammar is always my biggest problems in my writing. My writing would make sense but little errors here and there do disrupt...

My Writing Style

...brief answer, I’d say that an author is a well-known writer or a person who writes big pieces of writing. I’ve never given it much thought before and I don’t think I’ll ever exactly know unless I do some research. Some could say that the mere act of writing is what makes a person an author. If I am to be considered an author for the fact that I have written a few essays, then that’s great but I really don’t feel like I should be given that title. In my own standards and from what I’ve been reflecting upon, authors are people who are known for their writing and whose writing is aimed to be read by many. Hence, I do not consider myself an author for the reason that my writing does not seem at the level of an author and I don’t write for other people to read....

O’brien’s Writing Style

...My Thought on O’Brien’s Writing Style Authors always have specific writing styles to attract and influence their readers. In the novel, The Things They Carried, Tim O’Brien uses selected diverse writing techniques to support what he intently wrote. In my opinion, these techniques are very immediate and compelling for his readers as well as are essential to support non-fiction writers’ styles. Tim O’Brien uses symbolism, common language, and fiction writing in his novel for the purpose of showing his readers the big picture of US soldiers in the Vietnam War. For one thing, symbolism is a technique that uses a word, a phrase, or a description in order to represent a deeper meaning than the words themselves. In the first chapter of The Things They Carried, the author states, “Jimmy Cross carried letters from a girl named Martha,” ‘Ted Lavender, who was scared, carried tranquilizers, 6 or 7 ounces of premium dope” “Norman Bowker carried a diary. Rat Kiley carried comic books. Kiowa, a devout Baptist, carried an illustrated New Testament.” By listing the daily-using things the soldiers carried, the author not only indicates the soldiers’ characteristics but also implies unseen things as the love of Jimmy Cross for Martha, the fears of facing the unknown dangers from the mysterious land. By using of this technique, O’Brien can put messages behind the certain words so that his readers can actually understand what are being implied. Relate back to the thesis. Another technique...

When I first signed up I did not know what to expect and had no idea how to write in the AP style, but I quickly learned. Having had a passion for writing, I signed up and hoped for the best. However, my bargain paid off because I have never enjoyed a class more and have learned so much. Since then I have met some of the current staff on field trips and even dancing in front of the entire school. Even in these few hours I have spent with them they have helped me more than they know. I slowly broke out of my shell and became more confident in my writing and in general. I want to do that for other journalism students. It was a thrill to make it into the first issue...

How Writing Styles Affect My Writing

...“It looks like a cockroach covered in ink ran across your page,” my mother often teased in Bengali. The number of times I have been patronized for my horrific handwriting is unfathomable. Teachers saw grading my essays as more of a punishment than their obligation. “It’s not my fault!” I exclaimed. “My parents made me switch from my left hand to my right hand when I was in the first grade!” However, no matter how often I constantly explained to my elementary school teachers, they did not care. Psychologically, they destroyed my self esteem in writing from an early age. How can I or anyone write under the impression no one is going to read it? The sad truth is, the quality of my handwriting affected my grades on personal narratives and essays. The worse the quality of my handwriting, the lower my grade would be....

Moving from Academic to Business Writing Style

...Academic to Business Writing Style When I first entered the business world as an intern, I quickly realized that I would have to unlearn the academic writing style in order to improve my business communication skills. I have learned that being able to writing effectively and professionally is the key to being successful. Due to the advancement in technology, the way we communicate with each other has completely transformed. Business professionals are now able to communicate instantly via e-mail, phone, and video with a simple touch of a button. Effective business writing is a skill that can be improved with practice. Understanding the differences between academic and business writing is essential for success. Business writing differs from academic writing in terms of: • Format • Purpose/Audience • Content Business writing is composed of simple, short sentences that vary in length. It is important to write in a clear and concise manner to avoid information overload. The writer should convey the message in as few words as possible. The authors of “Writing that Works” emphasize that it is important to “write concisely, but do not be so blunt that you risk losing the reader’s goodwill” (Alred, Brusaw, & Oliu, 2013, p. 277). The use of bullet points and bold font helps to summarize the information and emphasize important details. The two main purposes of business writing are to recommend actions and inform the audience. In business writing, the audience can include...

Apa Style of Writing

...Note: Use the full title of the web page if it is short for the parenthetical citation. Articles found on the web, like the example above, are not italicized in the reference entry and are not italicized but enclosed in quotations in the in-text citation, just like a newspaper or magazine article. Reports found on the web would be italicized in the reference list, as in Publication Manual (6th ed.) Examples 31, 32, and 33 on pp. 205–206. They would also be italicized in the in-text citation, just like a book. These posts on the APA Style blog will also be helpful: How to Cite Something You Found on a Website in APA Style by Chelsea Lee Perhaps the most common question we get about APA Style is “How do I cite a website?” or “How do I cite something I found on a website?” First, to cite a website in general, but not a specific document on that website, see this FAQ. Once you’re at the level of citing a particular page or document, the key to writing the reference list entry is to determine what kind of content the page has. The Publication Manual reference examples in Chapter 7 are sorted by the type of content (e.g., journal article, e-book, newspaper story, blog post), not by the location of that content in a library or on the Internet. The Manual shows both print- and web-based references for the...
