My writing style has been describe by my family and friends as middle school level. I have tried very hard to work on it. It has been one of the reasons it took me so long to pursue my graduate degree. I knew my writing was not up to par for a graduate student. I tend to write the way I speak and my grammar is worst than my eight year old sons. I can use the fact that english is not my first language, but I honestly think, I have been so used to speaking and writing in slang so much it is hard for me not to now. I knew I had to start correcting myself and be more mindful of my grammar and language once I started teaching. It is still a work in progress, I try to usually keep my messages to the parents short and simple. I also write in cursive, that way when I misspell a word it is harder to see. My research skills has not been any better. I am still learning how to cite my citations. I cannot tell the difference between MLA and APA format. I tend to have a hard time putting what I need into my own words and summarizing. I do not like writing papers, but it is unavoidable in graduate school. After reviewing the research guides and completing the avoiding plagiarism tutorial I now have a little bit of a guide to follow. My strength has always been my ability to take notes. I love to write, I tend to have a hard time summarizing, so I write everything done. When I am doing a research, I would write down anything that has to do with my topic. Having the information has never been a problem for me. I enjoy doing an outline, writing in phrases and picking out key words. I can look for sources online as well as in the library. My weakness if my spelling and grammar. I also write a lot of run on sentences and fragments. I sometimes do not know where or how to use a comma, semi-colon and colons. Independent and dependent clauses are the same to me. I did not know the difference until I went to visit the Ashford Learning Center. I have a hard time starting and putting my outlines into an actual paper. I do not know the APA citation format. My plan by the end of this class is to get better with my grammar and spelling. I believe that with the Ashford Writing Center as a tool, it should not be hard. I want to succeed as a Master’s Degree student. I want to be able to write to parents without someone else proof reading my writing to make sure it is okay. Writing is such a huge part of how I communicate to my parents, it is only fair that they can understand when it comes to something about their children. When it comes to my research, I plan to be as thorough as I can. I will also work on my APA citation format and learn ways to avoid plagiarism. I have learn that there is hope for me and my writing. It is still not too late for me to improve on my writing. I have the resources through Ashford Writing Center to help and motivate me to improve my writing. It gives me hope to know that I do have some strength to help me over come my weakness. Plagiarism has always been a worry of mind but being able to provide clear attribution of outside sources, as well as using my own words and sentence structure when I paraphrase. I will also make sure that I include all my sources on my work cited page. I learn how to list my reference to include all the works I cite in my paper.

I have a very good sense on how to write and what I would like to get out onto the paper. I usually like to write about personal experiences either the good or the bad. ...My Thought on O’Brien’s Writing Style Authors always have specific writing styles to attract and influence their readers. In the novel, The Things They Carried, Tim O’Brien uses selected diverse writing techniques to support what he intently wrote.
