Nearly all of Europe was involved in World War I. The spark that set off the war was when a Serb from a Serbian nationalist group assassinated Archduke Ferdinand of Austria. Soon, nation after nation started declaring war on each other. However, there were other factors which influenced the war; militarism, alliances, imperialism, and nationalism. Of these underlying causes, the most significant are imperialism, militarism, and most importantly, alliances.
Imperialism played an important role in starting World War I. Many European countries controlled the economic systems of other countries, including Austria-Hungary. Austria-Hungary annexed Bosnia, and in doing so, “[aggravated] relations with Serbia and Russia” (What Started the War?). This …show more content…
Germany and Great Britain participated in an arms race, albeit a friendly competition. In 1910, 4 years before the war, Germany had spent around 30 million pounds of their army and Great Britain spent a little less than 30 million on theirs (Document C). However, Great Britain still was in the lead when it came to their navy, as they spent over 90 millions pounds while Germany had a navy that cost just short of 80 million pounds (Document C). Because of the increase in military spending, it’s reasonable if tensions between Germany and Great Britain evolves from a friendly arms race into a competition to see who actually will create a stronger fighting force. In a speech from Bernhard von Bulow to the German congress, he proposed that Germany “will only be able to keep [itself] at the fore if we realize that there is no welfare for us without power, without a strong army and a strong fleet” (Document D). In other words, he is trying to persuade the German government to increase funding on the military so that Germany can defeat its competitor, Great Britain, in the arms …show more content…
Without alliances, World War I wouldn’t have been a “world war,” but only a war between Serbia and Austria-Hungary. The two main contenders in World War I were the Triple Entente and the Triple Alliance. The Triple Entente included the countries Russia, France, and Great Britain, while the Triple Alliance consisted of Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy (Document A). These alliances caused a tangled web of war declarations. Since Austria and Serbia are at war with each other, so are Germany and Russia (Document B). This is because Russia, an ally of Serbia due to their slavic population, declared war on Austria, who is allied with Germany (What Started the War?). A chain reaction occurs, as wars are waged between France and Germany, Germany and Belgium, and Great Britain and Germany (Document B). This network of alliances is what made World War I ass devastating as it

... World War One (I), 1914-1918, the era of compulsory, compliance, and consequences. During these years President Woodrow Wilson enforced his power over the people of the United States. He used tactics like censorship to silence the American people, propaganda to enlist people to pay for the War, and conscription to force people to fight in the War. The United States did not join the War until 1917 after President Wilson reelection. His campaign slogan “he has kept us out of the war” is argued how he won his reelection yet later in 1917 when he got the U.S into the War the American people felt betrayed. My argument will focus on how the government reacted to ordinary people, negatively speaking about the War and the administration. Also, how imprisonment of loved ones affected the communities of the ordinary American people. The assumption today about the Espionage Act is that Congress purpose was to suppress all criticism about the War and the draft. This claim is not exactly true, Congress made several amendments to the Act, yet President Wilson and his administration distorted the Act for their own motives. The Sedition Act of 1918 was a new amendment. This amendment restricted harmful actions against the government, the Constitution, or the military. Previous scholars have made the claim that it was not the words exactly but rather the intention behind it that was disloyal and considered treason. Although, many scholars have acknowledged the issue of freedom of speech during...

Middle East

...Middle East DBQ By: Tracey Smith There were many wars against Israel. The most famous one is the war of 1948. The war followed the creation of the nation-state of Israel in 1948 as the effect of colonialism in the Middle East. There are many different aspects of the war like the beginning of the war, the Balfour Declaration and the United Nations Partition Plan. The reason why the Israeli-Arab war started was because of the ongoing and complicated conflict between the 'Palestinians' and the Zionist-Jews. Zionism was a theology that was created in the late 1800's in Europe where they believed that the Jews should 'return' to their 'homeland' which was Jerusalem; they also believed it’s their Homeland because God promised them Jerusalem in the Torah. They still believe it’s their Homeland because they had the empire 3,000 years ago. Throughout the Middle East, the Muslims invited the Jews to come into Jerusalem after they were kicked out by the Romans many years before during Islamic rule. The Ottoman Empire, which was Islamic, built temples where the Jews prayed for the Muslim, Christian and Jewish warriors who fought and are fighting for the Ottoman Empire. There were people who were living in the area, who call themselves Palestinians; Palestinians were ruled by the Ottoman Empire, just like Egypt, Syria, Jordan, Lebanon etc. The Palestinians lived in the land for hundreds of years, building, trading and more. The Jews in Europe began to immigrate into...
