...MANAGING TALENT: General Motors’ Commitment to Diversity Back in the 1980s, valuing diversity was far from the minds of the leadership at General Motors. True, GM had established a program to promote minority-owned dealerships, but there were problems within the company. Women and minorities complained to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission that the carmaker was discriminating against them. In 1984, the EEOC and GM reached a $42.4 million settlement in which GM promised to promote women and minorities into management positions. Since then, the company has never swerved from that effort at inclusiveness. Today GM garners praise as a company that far exceeds legal standards for equal employment opportunity. For GM, this commitment to diversity is a way to better serve its customers in the United States and around the world. A diverse workforce, supplier base, and dealer network show GM how to serve a diverse marketplace. And openness to diversity—what GM calls a welcoming Workplace of Choice—gives the company access to the best talent in the world, without regard to such differences as race, sex, and nationality. In the words of Alma Guajardo-Crossley, director of GM’s diversity initiatives, recruiting and hiring minorities is “business sense,” because in the United States, minority groups “are pretty much going to be the majority here pretty soon.” They have an impact because the company does not merely hire minorities, but also develops them, trains all employees to...

...SCS 2812 Assignment # 1 Fang Guo and Angelo Gomez May 20th 2014 Introduction As WizCo continues to grow rapidly, our top corporate goal is to double our revenues year on year. To achieve this, we have identified strategies to implement. To determine and measure our success, we chose some very important metrics and its associated Key Performance Indicators (KPI) to help us assess and monitor our progress. Each KPI discussed below will supplement our scorecard as the benchmark measurement. Conversion Rate Each visitor can be counted as WizCo’s potential buyer. The success of our online presence is measured by our ability to convert high volume of visitors into buyers. The aim of this performance indicator is to increase our conversion rate by optimizing each and every step in our buying process. Given data shows that the highest conversion rate is from the direct channel, but it’s hard to expand the number of new visitors because the traffic volume is too low for us to improve it in a short time. The conversion rate of the paid search is the lowest, in order to increase our conversion rate by 20% in a year, we need to focus on increasing the organic search conversion rate by 20% from 1.7% to 2% and referral channel by another 20% from 5% to 6%. The increase of conversion rate will directly impact on our revenue in a positive way. An improvement on our website and sales funnel will help us to maintain continuity so that customers never feel lost in our website. Retaining...

Takeovers are one of the most important events in corporate finance, both for a firm and the economy. Extensive research has shown that shareholders in bidding firms gain significantly and that wealth is created at the announcement of takeovers i.e., combined bidder and target returns are positive. 2. Our main focus is on examining the returns to acquirer’s i.e. large and small firms, making bids for public, private, and subsidiary targets, using cash and stock, and seeing how the acquirers’ returns vary by these characteristics and the acquirer’s size. Our study enables us to provide new evidence on what bidder returns tell us about takeovers. Therefore, our sample provides a fruitful testing ground for probing the meaning of returns to acquirers. I. Predictable Hypothesis A. Investment Opportunity Hypothesis 3. Myers (1977) links the existence of growth opportunities and corporate borrowing activity...
