...* CASE * Wyatt Earp - The Buffalo Hunter F. Robert Jacobs, Indiana University The legend of Wyatt Earp lives on largely based on his exploits as a gunfighter and Marshall of the frontier West in the 1880s. The classic tales of the shootout at the O.K. Corral in Tombstone or his sawed-off shotgun duel with Curly Bill are possibly the most celebrated gunfights of frontier history and cannot fail to stir the reader's imagination. Wyatt lived to be over 80 years old, long enough to recount his story to Stuart Lake for the book Wyatt Earp: Frontier Marshall (published by Pocket Books). Apparently, Wyatt was quite a financial success long before he became a marshal. He learned how to hunt and shoot buffalo when only 15 years old. By the time he was 20, the Kansas City and Caldwell buffalo hunters knew him as one of the best in the west. His methods for hunting buffalo were very different from the established practices of the time. Outside the marshal's office in Caldwell, veteran hunters would meet to compare the season's hunt. Success was measured solely by animals killed and cash received for the hides and meat. Wyatt realized that what was important was the gain after expenditures for horses, wagons, supplies, and skinners' wages were considered. Any hunter could boast of the money in his pockets at the end of a season, but few could say accurately how much was gain. The Ways of the Veteran Hunters The buffalo hunter of 1871 set out for the range with five four-horse...

...Audit Again, we did not see this coming, though it's not as if Iglesias ought to be expected to bat below his weight, either. "He's pretty good at getting the bat to the ball," Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said. "Even down 0-2, he's got a chance to put the ball in play. He's got a very simple approach. There's not a lot of movement involved with his setup and load to hit. He's pretty good at getting the bat there to find a hole." Will it continue? Not at this rate, of course. Iglesias has seen 38.6 percent of balls he put into play fall for hits, an unusually high number that could be due to come down. He also had a .638 OPS in six Minor League seasons and a .678 OPS in his first 465 Major League plate appearances, so this early offensive outburst might be just that -- early. In a two-week stretch beginning April 18, Iglesias' average fell more than 100 points, so the correction is underway. Still, Iglesias' glove and actions in the field are so strikingly sound and he's working off such a fine offensive stat base that he has to be considered the early favorite for the AL honor. Bogaerts, though, is a good candidate to chase Iglesias eventually, if not immediately. Granted, he's not nearly as hyped as he once was. The Red Sox wouldn't have traded Iglesias to the Tigers midseason in 2013 if Bogaerts weren't waiting in the wings, and Bogaerts' national emergence that October made him seem like a star. But after a hot May last year, Bogaerts cooled considerably, looked lost...

...and his adventures so I decided this was where I would go to see the town and history myself. From doing some research I have learned that Leadville is one of the most historic towns in Colorado with a colorful history. Leadville has a rich history that started when gold was discovered in the California Gulch, during the Pikes Peak Gold Rush. Leadville boomed so fast that it fell behind in basic services. For this reason, many residents were lost to Cholera, a waterborne disease. Colorado can thank Leadville for some of the national notoriety that brought others out West in the hopes of striking it rich. Not only the mining history but just the famous and fascinating people who have put their mark on Leadville, such as Doc Holliday and Wyatt Earp. In 1880, Leadville ranked as the second largest city, only behind Denver. Leadville has had its many ups and downs of booms and busts. As quick as the boom came in, it went out when the little Pittsburg ran out of rich ore in 1880. Let me say the drive to Leadville was beautiful, with vibrant blue skies and sunshine! The weather was in the low 40’s when I arrived there. For whatever reason, I had expected something similar to Cripple Creek, and I was not disappointed. Leadville is a quaint, sleepy town with a beautiful view nestled in the mountains. The town has such small town feel to it and the people were...

...Wyatt Earp is not a passive man, but he does wish to remove himself from the violence of Dodge City and the wild west. My Darling Clementine was released in 1946, the film can be interpreted as the soldiers who fought in Europe and the Pacific return back to the US for a quieter life. Earp is the gold standard for Western heroes, righteous man with always the righteous cause. Never does he go looking for trouble, it goes looking for him. Earp is Henry Fonda and John Ford, both combat veterans looking to leave that life behind and much like Earp, there is a place out west for them. This was still the Big Studio days and actors like Ford or Jimmy Stewart were welcomed back with open arms. Contrast that with the blue-collar workers in The Best Years of Our Lives and Vietnam veterans like Travis who don’t experience a welcoming, instead are rejected. The world of Fonda and Ford is not as inviting as it is for the common man....

...James Coates Mrs. Kopcak English May 10, 2006 Angels Angels were a major part of ancient civilizations, but how did the whole myth about angels start and has it changed over the years? How does the past compare to today’s world? Are there different classes of angels? What are their jobs, what do their jobs have them doing? The word 'angel' comes from the Greek angelos, which itself could be considered as a translation of the Hebrew word mal'akh, meaning 'messenger', suggesting that a being responsible for carrying messages between the human world and some other realm or realms of existence, someone who is an intermediary between 'down here' and 'up there'. The origins of angels, started back in ancient Sumeria. The Sumerian society is the oldest society that has left us clear evidence of the use of a winged human motif. This evidence is in the form of stone carvings, either in the form of three-D statues or relief carvings that provide the illusion of three-dimensionality. The religion of these people was complex, embracing a wide variety of spirits and gods, but of particular interest was their belief in 'messengers of the gods', angelic forces who ran errands between gods and humans. The Sumerians also believed that each person had a 'ghost' of some sort (what we would now probably label as 'guardian angel') with this entity remaining a constant companion for a person throughout their life. After the polytheistic Semitic tribes had conquered the Sumerians around 1900...

...RUNNING HEAD: Quality One Call at a Time Quality One Call at a Time May 30, 2006 Quality scores in many call centers are on the decline. The main goal of a call center is to provide excellent customer service while delivering accurate information in a timely manner. “Fast is fine, but accuracy is everything.” Wyatt Earp. Wyatt Earp may not have said this quote in reference to managing quality at call centers, but it carries the same relevance. Management at call centers tends to focus on other issues instead of the accuracy of the information that the CSR is relaying to the customer. Thus value is misplaced and the quality at call centers starts to head on a downward path. One issue that could drive quality scores down is ineffective training. At a call center here in Jacksonville, management decided to pull CSRs out of training after the second day to answer calls because the queue was high. This interrupted the training process and added days to the training schedule. The trainer manager was powerless to prevent this from happening. This happened 6 times over the course of the proposed three-week training calendar. Call center trainers must ensure that their trainees’ learning is not hindered by management’s goal to reduce queue times. The constant yo-yo handling of the CSRs resulted in training not being delivered on all topics, which resulted in low quality scores. This has not been a high topic of focus for most call center management staff. ...

...between the Earp’s and the Clanton’s. For the most part I believe it to be a respectable movie containing a powerful storyline. This film portrays the life and times of the famous cowboy, Wyatt Earp, focusing on what led to the gunfight at the O.K. Corral. Tombstone provides a mixture of both fact and fiction, however I believe this film to be mainly accurate. After seeing this particular film, I have resulted in finding some of the accurate and incorrect scenes and facts. Just to name a couple of the films inaccuracies are the misleading facts about the night Morgan Earp was killed and the life of Johnny Ringo. Some of the films accuracies include the relationship between Wyatt Earp and Josephine Marcus, and how Curly Bill was killed. As a result of the number of accuracies and inaccuracies, this movie would be considered historically accurate. In the film, Morgan Earp is shown at a pool hall late one night, where he is playing alone. All of a sudden, an unidentified individual from outside shoots him through the window. Wyatt along with along with a few others rushed to see him. They find Morgan lying on top of a pool table as a doctor tried to remove the bullet. However, there are many things wrong with this scene. To start, Morgan was never alone that night. Instead, his brother Wyatt accompanied him. They happened to be playing pool with the owner of the parlor, Bob Hatch, when Morgan was shot (Woog 61). The gunshot was fired through the glass door of the building...

...legal authorities versus outlaws. The gunfight consisted of nine people who were as follows: Wyatt, Morgan, and Virgil Earp, Doc Holliday,Ike Clanton, Billy Clanton,Tom McLaury, Frank McLaury, and Billy Claiborne. “John Henry “Doc” Holliday was born in Griffin, Georgia, on August 14, 1851.”[1] It is said that he had surgery on his cleft palate when he was two months old, however some historians and physicians debate on whether or not this really happened. “He and his family moved to Valdosta, Georgia in 1864 where his mother died two years later of tuberculosis, Holliday was only 15 at the time.”[1] When he was 19 he moved to Philadelphia where he went to school to earn his dental degree. In 1873 he moved to Dallas, Texas and decided to open a dental office. After a year or so he became a dedicated gambler when he realized that it was more profitable than his dental work. In 1875 he had his first run-in with the law and was indicted for illegal gambling. He was found guilty and left the state for a few years. Holliday came back to Texas in 1877 where he met a man named Wyatt Earp. They began a new unlikely friendship that they would keep until their deaths. They were introduced to each other by a man named John Shanssey. Their friendship was set in stone in 1878 in Dodge City, Kansas. This was when Doc Holliday defended Wyatt Earp from a gang of cowboys who were out to kill him. Wyatt Earp was quoted saying this about Doc Holliday, "I found him a loyal friend and good company...

...My Galley by Thomas Wyatt the Elder "A rain of tears, a cloud of dark disdain ", Sir Thomas Wyatt words in “My Galley”. Wyatt was a 16th-century English lyrical poet attributed to introducing the sonnet into English. Thomas Wyatt was born to Henry and Anne Wyatt at Allington Castle, near Maidstone, Kent, in 1503. Little is known of his childhood education. He was remarkably gifted man. His first court appearance was in 1516 as Sewer Extraordinary to Henry VIII. In 1516 he also entered St. John's College, University of Cambridge. Around 1520, when he was only seventeen years old, he married Lord Cobham's daughter Elizabeth Brooke. She bore him a son, Thomas Wyatt, the Younger, in 1521. He became popular at court, and carried out several foreign missions for King Henry VIII, and also served various offices at home. Wyatt’s “My Galley” is a sonnet typically ranges according to the tradition of Petrarchan. It has the same five rhymes a, b, c, d, e, and can be divided in two parts which is octave and sestet. The sonnet was written by Sir Thomas Wyatt in 1557 during the Renaissance Period in England. The subject matter of a poem can range from being funny to being sad. Wyatt uses of metaphor and imagery presented a quite pessimistic view. Wyatt is talking about despair, and probably means religious despair. It seems to me that he wrote about the 'sin' of losing your faith in God. He uses the common metaphor of a ship in trouble at sea. " ”My Galley” charged with forgetfulness...

...“Whoso List to Hunt” by Sir Thomas Wyatt and “Sonnet 67” by Edmund Spenser are sonnets that are very similar at a first glance, but delving deeper, a difference can be found. Both of these sonnets use imagery and figures of speech relating to the hunt of an unobtainable woman as well as that central theme. Through a deeper analysis it is revealed that these two authors have a different interpretation of this failed hunt. A comparison and contrast of “Whoso List to Hunt” and “Sonnet 67” reveals that they are very similar through the analysis of their imagery and theme, but a look at the tone, reveals a different view on the problems faced in by these two speakers. “Whoso List to Hunt” shows an unobtainable woman represented as a deer, while the narrator is her hunter. Starting off the sonnet, the narrator jumps right into this comparison: “Whoso list to hunt, I know where is an hind” (Wyatt, 1). This immediately initializes the comparison as the woman being a deer, for the entire poem. A continuation of this metaphor can be seen when the narrator seems to give up on his love, “Draw from the deer: but as she fleeth afore” (Wyatt, 6). Here, the speaker continues his metaphor. “Sonnet 67” also displays this imagery in a similar fashion. Once again, the narrator has been hunting his deer in futile attempts to catch her: “Seeing the game from him escaped away” (Spenser, 2). As a hunter would be saddened by his game running away, similarly the narrator is saddened by his woman leaving...

...Sir Thomas Wyatt was a member of a wealthy and well connected gentry family from Kent. He succeeded to the family estates on the death of his father in 1542. Unfortunately for Wyatt, his career suffered a setback in 1547 when Surrey fell into disfavor with Henry VIII and was executed. As a committed protestant Wyatt favored the Edwardian regime, which he defended in 1549 when riots broke out in Kent. He was trusted by Somerset's successor Northumberland, who appointed him to represent the English government in negotiations with the French in 1550. Wyatt served the Edwardian regime loyally but declared his support for Mary when Jane Grey was proclaimed queen. Wyatt's initial support for Mary soon evaporated when he heard of the Spanish marriage. As an MP he became involved in the opposition to the proposed marriage in parliament but his hopes of persuading the queen to reject the marriage failed.By the end of January 1554 anti-Spanish feelings led to a rebellion. The rebellion was ultimately a failure and therefore the threat it posed must have been highly significant in the moment but passed quickly. Mary's character, her determination and her courage were important factors that helped to keep royal authority intact. Mary was known throughout her reign for her strong religious beliefs. Mary was a devoted catholic with strong views on how the country would be best suited to her religious influences. Her religious conviction and strong personality combined were in many ways responsible...
