The Wynnum neighbourhood plan is centered on providing oppurtunities for developers. Wynnum is identified as a suburb that offers bayside living, with great public transport and fast links to the Brisbane cbd. The brisbane city council is commited to facillitating growth in the area. the proposed development is an 8 storey high community high rise area with surrounding reseential and commercial development. Unfortunately, the increasing urbanisation of the area around Lota and tingalpa creek is causing and will continue to cause the local environment to suffer. The effects of urbanisation will intensify as development is increased. There are a variety of factors that will effect the ecosystem including increased flooding, water pollution, litter, sewage…show more content… As this happens, waves lose their ability to scour the river bed and carry away sediments. Mangroves also reduce winds across the surface of the water and this prevents the propagation or re-formation of waves. Without this natural defence, the area is at a higher risk of severe flash flooding. Another effect that the proposed urbanisation will have on the local ecosystem is water pollution via urban runoff. When it rains, water is absorbed by the soil and carried into streams. However, when these soils are replaced with urban materials (concrete etc) there is nothing to absorb it. Instead it flows down streets and into drains, which lead into local creeks. As it flows over the land surface, rainwater picks up potential pollutants that may include sediment, nutrients (from lawn fertilizers), bacteria (from animal and human waste), pesticides (from lawn and garden chemicals), metals (from rooftops and roadways), and petroleum by-products (from leaking vehicles). For example Nitrogen is a common ingredient in fertilizer and phosphorus is a common constitutent of fertilizer and
