A New House—Readiness

I have been faced with the decision of whether to purchase a new home or not. Making this decision has taken a lot of thought and planning. I had to look at the principals of economics, the marginal benefits and cost associated with my decision, and the economy. These are all factors that play a vital role in making a decision that I will be committed to for thirty years.

One of the most difficult decisions that I had to consider was facing trade-offs. I had to ask myself what I am willing to give up to purchase this new home. I wanted to purchase a new home in a ritzy part of San Antonio but quickly realized that I could not afford to purchase a home in that area. So, I began looking in a nice middle class subdivision that was more affordable for me. I also had the desire to purchase a home with an in ground swimming pool. Unfortunately, this was not an option due to the community pool. I had to determine what was more important to me and I chose to change the geographical location that I wanted to live in and the swimming pool was not that important to me. I was not able to have a pool put in and live in the ritzy part of town, but I am able to have upgrades to my home and it is affordable.

When my husband and I first looked at purchasing our home we had to look at our budget and see what we could afford and what we were willing to give up in order to purchase this new home. We had to cut back on going out to dinner three times a week to once a week, the new vehicle I wanted to purchase was no longer an option at this time. We had to decide what was important to us and what was not. The reality is that we all want things but sometimes we have to prioritize and sacrifice to obtain the things that are important to us, like purchasing a new home.

...New Technology Paper XCOM 225 New Technology Paper Technology is continually changing the way society communicates and receives information. The past century has produced new technologies that have created alternate methods for sharing news and information. Television and print media, such as newspapers, magazines, and books were the primary means for receiving information, however now the internet and electronic books (ebooks) have taken the lead. This paper will discuss how ebooks work, what this technology replaced, why they are preferable to the older method, how they benefit a print media corporation and the public, and the opposition to ebooks. Ebook Functionality Ebooks are digital electronic books. Digital books are steadily increasing and cover a multitude of subjects and platforms. Novels-fiction, or non-fiction, textbooks, and reference books are some of the types available with ebooks. People are able to access and view ebooks on computers, smart-phones, or a variety of reading devices, known as ebook readers. An innovative technology associated with the ebook is the way the text shows on a screen. “The most important step forward may be in “digital ink”, the technology used for displaying letters on a screen. A small company called E Ink has created a method for arranging tiny black and white capsules into words and images with an electronic charge (Business Week, 2006)”. This technology not only helps to save on energy consumption, but also aides against screen...

...XCOM/285 Capstone Reflection June 22, 2012 As I sit here and think about what I have learned from this class over the last 9 weeks there are a few things that come to mind. I had a great experience in this class and it has taught me a few things that I never really understood. The main thing I have learned is that communication is the key to any successful business. It is more than just sending out an e-mail or perhaps in today’s society a text message. You have to learn to speak properly and learn how to address people in the right way. This will allow for you to avoid a lot of issues such as lawsuits and even a job loss as well. When communicating in business you need to understand how to address the audience and command the room at the same time. It is important to understand the objective and how to relay the information in the proper way. The cross cultural communication matrix was a pretty fun and interesting assignment at the same time. It was interesting to see how the different parts of the world values communication. Being able to understand how or why a certain country does something gave me a new sense of respect. In today’s society we think people are rude if they are not like us in any way. Just because someone does not shake your hand or even address you in the same manner doesn’t mean they are a bad person. Every country has a different way of communicating with one another and we need to remain impartial to this. All in all I must say this was a very useful...

...| 2012 | | XCOM/285 Axia College [Type the author name] | [Business writing Portfolio] | | Reflection What I have learned from business writing and writing techniques can help my in all of my future business endeavors. I have learned when I need to sound more businesslike and when it is appropriate to write more friendly. When writing different documents such as emails, memos, and letters there are different ways to write. When I am writing for school I need to write more academically. The reason is because you are going to school and academics are the way to write. Using bigger words and sounding more formal will help with this. This can help when writing business letters as well. When writing business letters you need to sound more professional because you are sending out a letter. In an email you can be more relaxed because emails are short and to the point and you do not want to take up much of the persons time that is receiving the email. When writing a memo you want to sound professional and get to the point because the memo will be around for awhile. If you are writing business information depending on who is receiving that information you need to decide how professional you need to sound and how the information needs to be. What I have learned from this class will help ensure that I know how to write what I need to and get my point across to whomever I am writing to. Week One Xcom/200

...XCOM/200 What is the difference between communication, human communication, impersonal communication, and interpersonal communication? Communication, the exchange of ideas, is the foundation of society. Society's fascination with communication begins at an early age. One of the earliest milestones a parent encourages a child to achieve is saying her first word. Speaking and understanding language is crucial because language is used to inform and educate. A person who can effectively communicate is likely to be successful in life. Human communication is an intentional act performed by a human agent for the purpose of causing some effect in an attentive human recipient. Our ability to use language to build words, combine these into meaningful sequences and then articulate them through speech that makes us the most powerful communicators on the planet. Interpersonal communication is also largely relational. This means the relationship will define the way we speak to different people who we have different relationships with. For example, you will speak differently to your roommate than you would with the Dean of Students. As stated above, these interdependent individuals within a relationship will impact one another, so what you say and how you act with different people will have positive and negative influences on the relationship. Impersonal communication is a kind of communication that we normally have with sales persons. It is actually a form of I-It Communication where...

...CheckPoint: Technology Trendy Communication XCOM/285 April 2014 Week 1 CheckPoint: Technology Trendy Communication The face of business communications is changing very quickly with new technology. The question of using the new technology effectively weighs heavier on the side of not being able to. New devices and new methods of communication being produced at such a fast pace, businesses have a hard time keeping up. Training and retraining employees across the board, not only takes up time, but also takes enormous amounts of capital investment. (Locker & Kienzler, 2008). The older employees may also become less productive when having to retrain on new systems continually. Changing technology too quickly can be detrimental to other areas of business, such as customer service. For example, the customers’ needs being set aside while employees are training is not good for business. When customers call with questions, they like to hear the voice of confidence, but instead get the voice of frustration of new equipment or software an agent is still trying to master. There seems to be a larger number of big companies that have been able to keep up with the new trends, but usually not without consequence somewhere along the line. Accidental security breaches being high on the list of technology problems these companies face. Another problem being information overload. Too much information to manage can be overwhelming for employees (Locker...

...Listening and Verbal Communication Cristina Gonzalez XCOM/200 October 19, 2014 Listening and Verbal Communication Knowing how to properly communicate with people includes being a good listener. Listening to others is a skill that requires practice and a lot of effort. Listening is more than just standing there and looking at the other person; it’s being able to fully understand their message, and where they are trying to go with it. As humans we spend more than half our time listening to others, it’s a very important social skill and one that is much needed in the working world. I consider myself a selective listener. It’s definitely not by choice it simply happens. I remember back in high school I always had a hard time listening to my teachers, especially if the topic wasn’t “interesting enough”. In fact it still happens to me at work during meeting or seminars. My biggest problem has always been spacing out. Although I make eye contact with the speaker my thoughts always tend to go elsewhere. One of my biggest barriers has always been thinking I knew the answer to whatever it was that the teacher or speaker is saying; therefore I didn’t feel the need to actually listen. My second biggest barrier has always been red flag words “Words can provoke a reaction in the listener that wasn't necessarily what the speaker intended” (Michael Webb, 2006). Whenever this happens it becomes more difficult for me to listen and stay focused. I tend to jump to conclusions, or...

Xcom/285 - Essentials of Managerial Communication

...XCOM/285 - Essentials of Managerial Communication Checkpoint: Technology–Trendy Communication Technology is changing the face of business communications everywhere by the different types of information technology available. Businesses effectively using the resources to communicate would be benefiting from the options of the Internet and satellites. Between the two the connections a business can communicate and perform transactions from anywhere to anywhere. The old fashion businesses are using technology too by means of telephones and fax machines. However, as the technology improves newer high-tech items are available to make the business transactions and conversations more effortless as time goes on. Cell phones or the newer smart phones, PDA’s, laptops, IPad’s, Notebooks, etc. are the items a business men or women use to make the transactions, planning or scheduling, and conversations possible. The Internet itself has improved as the technology to access it has. For the businesses who are keeping up with the newer, more expensive, technology they are using the resources to communicate effectively. The companies that are not as up to speed with technology tend to lose customers for that exact reason. For example websites are becoming more popular for putting companies out there. The requirement is keeping up with the customer’s wants and needs. If a customer wants to shop on the Internet for anything the businesses that are more appealing will receive the customer’s attention...

...Technological Communication XCOM/285 9/6/14 Technological Communication Within the article entitled Superhero in the Cubicle the technological advancements, it is speaking of is that which is done via the web. Using the web as a conduit, companies are setting up web based programs to network the company’s employees. One way companies are setting up using record keeping, blogging, and bookmarking. This way it becomes easier to centralize communication and components such as e-mail, voicemail, instant messaging, and chatting are easily accessible and the employees all know where to go to check communication. Furthermore, using this network of communication helps store necessary data that may be translated and compiled to yield useful information. Another form of communication which is discussed in the article is what is known as social computing. Social computing includes blogging and other forms which employees may network and communicate information. This in return lowers cost and rids a company of the involvement of IT. After viewing and analyzing the forms of communication which have been discussed both would show to be a very helpful form of communication for my job. In comparison to each other record keeping is more strictly for data while social computing allows the employees to freely write information that may be shared and expounded upon by other employees as well. ...Working within a group environment has benefits and challenges. Some of the challenges can be having a mixed group of personalities and how then adapt with one another is a key indicator of the success of a project. How they come to an agreement and ensure they meet their goals is also a challenge but the benefits can be so rewarding within a business environment. The opportunity to share creative ideas, brainstorm together on obstacles and create a team environment is imperative to a business with complicated goals. The key to having a successful communication within a group is to ensure that everyone respects every idea that is contributed, to make sure that each individual is responsible for their actions, the ability to resolve a conflict by listening to everyone’s thoughts and ideas, the ability to take on your specific role and take it to the end of your goals, and most important ensure that your team is organized.
