...would not do for anyone else, even myself. He’s curious, enthusiastic, kind, smart, generous and forgiving. I could go on all day, but I will spare you too much of the proud mom talk. He makes me want to be a better parent, a better person. He teaches me more about forgiveness and kindness than I could ever hope to teach him. One day when he was in first grade, I was walking him to his classroom. If you have a boy, you know that when they see wide open spaces, this screams to them RUN! So instead of walking nicely beside me all the way to his class (and what boy does that anyway?), he ran ahead of me. When I finally caught up to him, I took him aside and lit into him with a lecture about walking with me, not running down the hall, yada yada yada. He said not a word the whole time, just stood there and looked at me. When I was done, he stood there for a second, looked right at me, and gave me a big hug before going off to class. Talk about feeling like a schmuck. Now that he’s ten, he does get mad at us more often, but it never lasts long. In five minutes, he’s back to normal, asking ten million random questions a minute. Kids have so much to teach us if we’ll pay attention. They cry freely, they laugh often, they see life as a great adventure. They’re just themselves. Somewhere along the way, we as adults often lose these qualities. What a shame. But how blessed we are to have children to remind us what life is supposed to be...

...Burning Down the House: A Case Study in Forensic Instrumental Analysis by Adam M. Boyd and Randolph K. Larsen III Chemistry and Biochemistry St. Mary’s College of Maryland As Dr. Marie Stanforth steered her cumbersome suv into an unoccupied space at the scene of the latest fire in upstate Michigan, she instantly recognized the address. It was the current residence of her ex-husband. Yet, with the same calm and collected demeanor with which she approached every crime scene she ever visited, Dr. Stanforth confidently opened the door of her car and walked purposefully towards the extinguished blaze. Her boots crunched through a thin layer of snow as she trudged toward the scene. The record cold—the coldest morning to date that winter—gave rise to a light snow slowly blanketing the entire state for the first time that year. Marie marveled at how snow seemed to cover everything in a forgiving white veil. “Poor jerk,” she thought to herself as she approached the smoldering blaze with her hands tucked in the pockets of her heaviest parka. “I wonder where he’s going to live now.” Before she reached the scene, however, she was met by her partner, Adley. “So what happened?” she dryly asked Adley as she tried to maneuver closer to the extinguished blaze. “There was a fire,” Adley recounted. “There was a real bad fire.” “Thanks for the update, partner,” Marie laughed as she put her hand on Adley’s shoulder. “Let’s have a look,” she added as she tried to push her way past Adley’s outstretched...

...Question #1 (4 points with 1/3 max page) Daniels would suggest that an enthusiastic Jones had her motivation extinguished when she was punished (P+) by her boss who chastised her and called her a “whiner” when she brought up the issue of the junction box. Additionally the NIC (Negative, Immediate Uncertain) consequence of being ignored, or criticized as troublemakers further extinguished any future input from line workers, stifling the program as a whole. When participation in the Six Sigma effort (antecedent), requires the raising of ideas (behavior), which is quickly met by a metaphorical spanking (consequence) the program quickly looses it’s traction within the organization (extinction), proven by Jones’s response “I’ll never use your coaching again”. Daniels might also argue that Management might be having a similar effect on Smith, by punishing Jones, Smith is R- supporting his negative feelings about the companies receptiveness of the Six Sigma program (although I believe this is outside of the context of the question) Questions #2 (8 points with 2/3 max page) A: Artifacts: Large parent company pushing its own mandates, obvious and frequently reinforced separation between two competing business units with assumption of a zero-sum organization. Physical environment and building layout stifled collaboration between business units. Those rewarded we those who parroted the leadership values and didn’t go against the will of the business leaders. Practice/Values:...

...the agent personally escorts you to your car, pretending that you’re getting the VIP treatment. Then comes the hard sell. As you’re walking the lot, the agent tries to get you to upgrade to a bigger (i.e. higher priced) car, with the implication that you’re cheap if you don’t upgrade. Then, once you get to the car that you actually rented, the agent tries to sell you a full tank of gas “because it’s cheaper per gallon than the pump price.” (Which is technically true, but only if you bring the car back completely empty). Then comes the upsell on unnecessary insurance. My agent wouldn’t let it go and kept pounding away on how I wouldn’t be covered, most insurance companies don’t cover everything, what’s your insurance company, yada-yada-yada. Very annoying, because I’m well aware that rental car insurance is a huge ripoff: if you took the rate and extended it out for a entire year, it would usually cost more than the car that you’re going to drive. Annoying, to say the least, and enough to make me avoid Enterprise in the future. Not because I blame the sales rep, but because I figure that if Enterprise is stupid enough to use those kinds of old-school tactics, they’ve got to be poorly run in other respects as well. What’s ironic about it it that the formula — build rapport, assess needs, provide...

...From the very beginning the psalmist addresses God directly, remarking that He knows his every action and is aware of his every thought. David acknowledges this as a way to give glory to God and affirm that he is indeed omniscient. It is extremely important to note the extensive use of the words “I” and “You” in the first few verses of the text as these pronouns seem to emphasize the relationship between God and the psalmist or singer of the hymn. While other cultures in this time period may have refrained from directly addressing their gods, David indicates an intense kinship between God and His people. It is also important to address the repetition of the Hebrew word yada or “to know” in the original text as it is repeated seven times throughout the passage. Yada covers various meanings from simple recognition to a sexually intimate relationship (i.e “Adam knew his wife Eve and bore a son named Cain”3.) This emphasis seems to indicate that David believes the concept of knowledge in general is a very important part of a meaningful relationship.4 What seems to astound David is the idea that God is not only all-knowing and ever-present but He also has the power to act and work directly within our lives and does so.5 Another notable term found in verse 14 is the word “fearfully” or yara. While it is...

...Did you bring your ethics to work today? Think you are a person of integrity and that you bring your highest standards of ethics to your workplace each day? Despite hundreds of pages of policies, codes of ethics, codes of conduct, organizational values, and carefully defined work environments, company cultures, lapses in workplace ethics occur every day. Lapses in workplace ethics result from inappropriate officer behavior such as insider stock trading, expense account fraud, sexual harassment, and involvement in conflicts of interest. Lapses in workplace ethics do not need to rise to that level to impact the workplace environment you provide for employees though. Lapses in workplace ethics can occur because of simple issues such as toilet paper, copy machines, and lunch signup lists. In a nationally important workplace ethics case, Hewlett-Packard company's, successful CEO, Mark Hurd, (now former H-P CEO), became embroiled in workplace ethics issues. I have no insider knowledge, but the public statement from the company indicated that Mr. Hurd left because he violated the company’s expected standards of conduct. Cathie Lesjak, H-P's chief financial officer, who was appointed interim CEO until the company can find a permanent replacement for Mr. Hurd, asked employees “to remain ‘focused’ and said ‘Mark had failed to disclose a close personal relationship he had with the contractor that constituted a conflict of interest, failed to maintain accurate expense reports,...

...Now I'm no nutritionist. I'm not even pursuing a degree in anything science related. I don't profess to know everything, or even that much, about what I'm about to rant about. I'm not even a "liberal New York elitist douche", as a friend from out of state loves to call those "types." Sure, I've dabbled in veganism before, but I'm antsy about taking pills to supplement my diet. I refuse to take food in capsule form, like in the cartoons about the future, unless you give me a flying car ala The Jetsons. However, thanks to a great Biology professor and general conversation with friends and colleagues, I think it's high time more people talked about exactly what they're eating. In December of 2006, New York City, my area of residence, took a step and decided to ban trans fats. Trans fat is linked to heart disease, which they claimed was the primary cause of New York City resident deaths. However what is a trans fat? Many foods will claim to be 0 trans fats, and yes indeed you will hear no mention of it on the back of a bag of chips or any other food, when reading the nutrition facts. However, almost all trans fats consumed today get created industrially by the partial hydrogenation of plant oils. What is this partial hydrogenation you say? Well hydrogenation is a process by which liquid vegetable oil gets turned into more solid fats. Kind of like in margarine and "I Can't Believe It's Not Butter." Hydrogenation is never done completely in the food industry, thus we have what is...

...causative organism of the black plague. The genus Yersinia is a part of the family Enterobacteriaceae. 3 of the species in this family are pathogenic; Yersinia pestis, Yersinia enterocolitica, and Yersinia pseudotuberculosis. Yersinia pestis is a gram-negative bacteria, it is nonmotile, and does not form endospores. It is a coccobacillus that displays unusual bipolar staining. The optimal growth temperature of Yersinia pestis is 28° to 30°C. Yersinia pestis is also considered a facultative anaerobe, and grows at pH ranging from 5 to 9.6, although it’s optimum pH is 7.2 to 7.6. Yersinia pestis has 4,744,671 base pairs on its chromosome, making it a large bacterium. The virulence factors for Yersinia pestis are unique, including YadA (Yersinia adherence protein.) YadA allows the attachment to host cells and activation of Complement. Also, at conditions at or above 37° C, Yersinia pestis becomes resistant to phagocytosis, making the human body a perfect reservoir for growth...

...APA Format: What Does It Mean? Almost every KGSM written assignment specifies that the paper conform to APA style. But no one really knows what this means. At the very least, the requirement could be that references be cited as described in the APA manual. But APA style involves a lot more. In this document, I will explain and/or provide examples of what I, personally, consider to be important in my classes. Some professors may require more or less. My best advice for what to do in other classes is to ask the professor. Two Required Elements Every paper has to have an introduction and a conclusion. The introduction establishes why the reader should read the paper. Notice that the introduction does not get a heading. The introduction can be really straightforward or it may be more creative. The conclusion describes the major findings of the paper. The conclusion may provide a summary of the paper. The conclusion may call for action. The conclusion does get a heading. Headings Headings can be a great friend. Not only can headings help you organize your paper, they also help your reader understand the organization. Sometimes, appropriate headings will be suggested by the assignment. Often an assignment will provide that there should be certain components to your paper. Those required sections can become your headings. The format for headings is specified by the manual. Level one headings are bold and centered. Level two headings are bold and...
