...Clearly few things rile people up more than religion and politics. These controversial topics fascinate and titillate the best of us including William H. Jennings, author of Storms over Genesis and Professor of Religion, Emeritus, at Muhlenberg College. His investigative work into the interpretations of the first three chapters of the most famous book in the world, the Bible, gives the reader insight into the environmentalist views, feminist views, and those of creationists. By seeking clarification of the various creation stories, Jennings tries to illuminate the current scholarly views of this ancient text including the origin and timeline of the Earth. The Earth has been in existence for quite some time. Just how long is still unknown, but scientists, especially environmental Darwinists, estimate the Earth is 4.55 billion years old (Jennings 86). But the date of Earth’s origin and the presence of man are two separate questions depending on if one relies on biblical references or stories, creationism, which put the age of the world, the beginning of creation between 6,000-10,000 years (77) or modern science. A Gallup poll found supporters of each side to be fairly split, forty-six percent towards creationism and thirty-six percent pointing to Darwinism as the correct derivation (88). Why is the question of Earth’s origin so germane? According to many, because Genesis only deals with God’s creation of man in His image, and science can prove the existence of “pre-Adam” man dating...

...17 What helped Job to maintain his integrity? Clearly, before the calamities struck, he had already cultivated a close relationship with Jehovah. Although we have no evidence that he knew that Satan had challenged Jehovah, Job was determined to stay loyal. He said: “Until I expire I shall not take away my integrity from myself!” (Job 27:5) How did Job develop this close relationship? No doubt, he cherished what he had heard about God’s dealings with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, who were his distant relatives. And by observing creation, Job could discern many of Jehovah’s qualities.—Read Job 12:7-9, 13, 16. 18. (a) How did Job show his devotion to Jehovah? (b) In what ways do we imitate Job’s fine example? 18 What Job learned aroused in him the desire to please Jehovah. In case his family members might have done something displeasing to God or “have cursed God in their heart,” he regularly offered sacrifices. (Job 1:5) Even when being severely tested, Job still said positive things about Jehovah. (Job 10:12) What a fine example! We too must regularly take in accurate knowledge of Jehovah and his purposes. We hold to a healthy routine in such spiritual activities as study, meeting attendance, prayer, and the preaching of the good news. Moreover, we do everything in our power to make known the name of Jehovah. And just as Job’s integrity pleased Jehovah, so the integrity of God’s servants today makes Jehovah’s heart rejoice. This subject will be considered in the following...

...Sermon: The Great Passover Today as we read chapter 12 from the book of Exodus, we will truly find the significance of the meaning of passover. The book of Exodus tells us how Moses was sent to Pharoah to be a deliverer of Israel to set the people of Israel free from persecution and slavery. The Pharoah appealed Moses’ request, thus as a result, setting the stage for a showdown for the God of Israel and the god of Egypt. Ten plagues upon the people of Egypt. The final plague was the death of the first born sons in all of the land of Egypt. God’s instruction were specific. God tells Moses’ on the 14th day of the month, to make sure all the families of Israel sacrifrice an umblemish lamb and smear its blood upon the door post of the house so God would “passed over” the Israelites and so they wouldn’t receive the impending wrath from heaven. (New International Version, Exodus 12: 6-7, 13). We see in here that the Israelites are the exception. They believed in God’s promise of deliverance and who by faith did certain things. It was an act of faith that said "we believe that what God says is true and that God will spare those who trust Him." As part of the passover the Israelites were to eat the meat of the lamb with bitter herbs and unleavened bread (Exodus 12: 8). Now we ask, what is the soul purpose of doing this? The act of doing this was to display the bitterness of their bondage and slavery and unleavened bread representing the Israelites leaving the old leaven or life of Egypt...

...The Story of Abraham and Sarah (Children's Version) Once there was a man named Abram. One day the Lord came to talk to Abram, and Abram asked, "Who will have all my things when I die". God promised Abram and his wife Sarai that one day they would be parents, even though they were old and had no children. God wasn't sure that Abram understood. So that night He took him outside, and said, "Do you see all the stars that are in the sky"? When Abram looked up, the whole night sky was full of stars, so many in fact that he would never be able to count them. Then God said, "That is how many children you will have". Quite a few years later when Abram was ninety-nine years old (older than even your grandparents) the Lord decided to change Abram's name to Abraham, which means "father of many." He also changed Sarai's name to Sarah. God told them again that they would be parents and that they would have a boy. This time Abraham laughed so hard he fell on his face! It was hard to believe that he and Sarah would have a child in their old age. One day three visitors came to Abraham's house. He hurried to meet them. "May I get you something to eat and drink?" Abraham asked. "Please come in and join us, and have a rest on the couch." The visitors agreed, so Abraham brought them some fresh bread, milk, and hamburgers. While the visitors were eating, they asked Abraham, "Where is your wife Sarah?" Abraham thought this was a little strange, but he replied, "She's in the...

...Romans 13 New Living Translation (NLT) Respect for Authority 13 Everyone must submit to governing authorities. For all authority comes from God, and those in positions of authority have been placed there by God.2 So anyone who rebels against authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and they will be punished. 3 For the authorities do not strike fear in people who are doing right, but in those who are doing wrong. Would you like to live without fear of the authorities? Do what is right, and they will honor you.4 The authorities are God’s servants, sent for your good. But if you are doing wrong, of course you should be afraid, for they have the power to punish you. They are God’s servants, sent for the very purpose of punishing those who do what is wrong. 5 So you must submit to them, not only to avoid punishment, but also to keep a clear conscience. 6 Pay your taxes, too, for these same reasons. For government workers need to be paid. They are serving God in what they do. 7 Give to everyone what you owe them: Pay your taxes and government fees to those who collect them, and give respect and honor to those who are in authority. Love Fulfills God’s Requirements 8 Owe nothing to anyone—except for your obligation to love one another. If you love your neighbor, you will fulfill the requirements of God’s law. 9 For the commandments say, “You must not commit adultery. You must not murder. You must not steal. You must not covet.”[a] These—and other such commandments—are summed...

...Jehovah’s Witnesses serve a purpose not just knocking on your door Chloe Lawson 08/08/13 Research Paper ENG 1020 Many people view Jehovah witnesses as being that religious group that knocks on your door and hands you out magazines when you are in a rush. Others believe that they are a group of people who are always talking about the world ending, and lastly some believe that witnesses aren’t Christians, they don’t believe in Jesus (anti-Christ), or they are some type of cult. On the contrary, Jehovah witnesses aren’t as bad as people make them seem, they are respectable genuine people. Many people in today’s society form biases and beliefs of someone, something, and especially a religious group without even finds facts about it. Jehovah’s witnesses actually serve a biblical purpose to educate the world spiritually about the one true god Jehovah. Once you understand them you, the principles they live by, and their duty you will think twice about judging them. I believe that the world is close minded to Jehovah’s witnesses because they know very seldom of them. History of Jehovah’s Witnesses: Firstly, when people hear Jehovah’s witnesses they think who is Jehovah? You guys don’t believe in Jesus? Where did they come from? Jehovah’s witnesses have been around for ages; Jehovah is the name of God, like anybody “God” is a title like boy or girl. You wouldn’t want to be called boy or girl every time someone addresses you everyone has a name, like God he has a name which is Jehovah...

What is the Documentary Theory? The Documentary Source Theory states the belief that Torah was not written by Moses, but rather, four independent authors. (Ch. 1 Pg. 21 ) 2. Give the “contributions” Spinoza and Astruc made to this theory. Spinoza developed a "higher criticism" of the Bible to analyze its contents internally, rather than through the text, which is tagged "lower criticism". (Ch.1 Pg. 21) 3. How does Davis refute this theory? Because it takes everything God made as a farse considering there is scientific evidence to back up this theory 4. Give several examples of external evidences for Mosaic authorship? The external evidences are contained with in the Torah, which contains references to Mosaic authorship. Exod. 17 :14; 24:4; 34:27; Num. 33:1, 2; Deut. 31:9. Numerous references :n the New Testament also allude to Mosaic authorship, and many are direct quotes from Christ Him- self. ...immortalized in history books, but that does not mean that they are forgotten. They are remembered by their friends and family. And some special people are remembered by people they hardly knew. My grandfather was one of those people. My grandfather was a special man. What made him special? Why will he be remembered by not only friends and family but also by small acquaintances? It was because he was a very selfless and compassionate man. He put everyone before himself in every situation. This was a man who worked three jobs at a time to support his wife and six children. He struggled most of his life to keep a roof over their heads and food on the table. But he did so with a positive attitude and a smile on his face. He didn’t just speak of compassion. Often he would let his children’s friends stay with them when their parents couldn’t keep them in their own home for various reasons. And though he wasn’t a rich man, he provided them with a roof over their head and food on the table, the same as he would do his own family. These children will remember the man who took them in when they had nowhere else to go. And he did not just speak of courage. He was enlisted in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Often he would treat me to stories of when he saved fellow shipmates from being thrown overboard in the middle of a typhoon. And when he pulled into the port of Nagasaki and saw the devastation that he described as “the only thing there was black ash as far as the eye could see.” The soldiers...

...If you look up compassion in the dictionary, you will see the following definition: A deep awareness of the suffering of another, coupled with the wish to relieve it. The construct of compassion is not clearly defined in psychological literature. Another definition of compassion is a feeling of sorrow or concern for another person's suffering or need, accompanied by a subsequent desire to alleviate the suffering. Compassion is felt as an emotion: a feeling that anyone may experience at some point in his or her lives. There are many instances where one may perceive specific conditions in which people will be more likely to feel compassion. There are also differences in the degree of an individual’s feelings of compassion, and that many people and cultures view compassion as a basic human value. If I see someone in pain or someone struggling, my first instinct is to help, to listen, to be there for them. I will be there if someone needs help, if someone needs an ear, if someone just needs another friendly person who can provide a simple thing: to acknowledge that they are here, and that their gripe is valid. I would rather live like that. It does not always make life easier for the listener, though. The Bible tells us of the many selfless and compassionate acts that Jesus performed during his time on Earth and His teachings to his disciples and followers about this topic. Jesus extends the virtues of mercy and compassion to us for our faulots, which may have resulted from the...

...Prophet: Jeremiah Jeremiah is one of the four major prophets according to the Catholic church. The book of Jeremiah covers the period between 626 BC to 583 BC. It is written by Jeremiah and his secretary Baruch. Jeremiah dictated and Baruch recorded his message. Jeremiah may have been related to the deuteronomic authors or some may say he may been one of the deuteronomic authors. Certainly his message was close to the deuteronomic writing. Jeremiah was born in a priestly family from a town near Jerusalem, around year 650BC, about 100 years after the prophet Isaiah. God had blessed him and God called him when he was very little. Jeremiah followed God’s way and was faithful to God. He lived his life in turmoil because he was witnessing the Israelites acting out their unfaithfulness to God. Jeremiah was called by God to be his prophet to Judah and to the nations in the mist of Judah’s political convulsions : - (687-642), the political dependence of the Assyria brought on an resurgence of idolatry in the form of a syncretist fusion of the Mesopotamian astral gods and the Canaamite fertility deities. - The religious and political situation persisted until 622-621 when the Book of the Law was discovered in the Temple, Josiah led a thorough reform in Judah, which he extended to northern Israel. The people of who had been faithful the Yahwistic covenant did really supported the King. This glorious reign came to end in 609BC after the king’s death. - (609-598) Under Jehoiakim...
