Ikea Case Study

...worlds top furniture retailer, operating 154 stores in 22 countries and servicing 286 million customers a year”(Moon, 2004). Despite the fact that IKEA has acted upon several smart actions in the past, there are certain factors that can account for their success today. These include their unique Scandinavian design, their low cost products or mentality, their broad segmented market, and their product strategy. As IKEA was founded in Scandinavia, the inspiration for design comes from their heritage comes through among IKEAs products. The designs are simple, yet unique, which allows IKEA to keep their promise to bring forth low priced, yet functional furniture. “Many competitors try to copy one or two of these things”(Moon, 2004), but “the difficulty is when you try to create the totality of what we have”(Moon, 2004). Not being able to imitate IKEA, makes its unique design and economies of scale a core competency that puts their company at a competitive advantage, stealing market share from their competitors. Another factor that has contributed to IKEAS success is their low pricing strategy by being cost efficient. The two major players that help maintain expenses down for IKEA is the self-service component and “flat packaging”. Customers pick up and assemble their own furniture, because IKEA “doesn’t charge you for things you can do on your own”(Moon, 2004). For self serve to work, the concept of “flat packaging” was introduced to assist with easier transportation. This saves 6 times...

...MISSION STATEMENTS OF SOCIALLY RESPONSIBLE FIRMS: A CONTENT ANALYSIS Refika BAKO LU Marmara University, Turkey Bige A KUN Marmara University, Turkey ABSTRACT A well-designed mission statement is essential for formulating, implementing and evaluating business strategy. However the role of the mission statement in the strategic management of business firms has not been sufficiently highlighted in the research literature. The importance of mission statements to the effective strategic management of business organizations is well documented in the literature but it is quite surprising that minimal attention has been paid to the role of mission statements of socially responsible organizations. This paper attempts to fill this gap in the literature. It focuses on the socially responsible firms, which are listed in the Business Ethics' 100 Best Corporate Citizens Index, by selecting the firms whose mission statements could be seen clearly from their corporate websites. The mission statements are then analyzed to determine their components and the differences between the firms. Keywords: Mission Statement, social responsibility, content analysis It becomes apparent when appraising the some definitions of the mission concept is regarded as multidimensional concept by virtually all authors. Further, variations in conceptualization and the specific words used notwithstanding, it is possible to identify common elements that underlie most definitions of the concept. In contemporary...

They have noticed a possible opportunity in this area for people like them at university that Facebook and other SNS have not addressed directly. They particularly liked the idea of only targeting tertiary students in order to attract singles looking for a more defined friendship and dating network. They were also attracted to a mobile application for smart phones that could be used to set up events and activities on the go. In addition to allowing subscribers to connect and meet new people with common interests, the service (application) would help coordinate and plan group...

Strategy Safari

...In this introductory chapter the rationale for and philosophy behind Images of Strategy are outlined. We argue that the conventional twentieth-century history of management and strategy leads us to unquestioningly assume that organizations are, for all people at all times, triangular hierarchies; that strategy is enacted by ‘the men at the top’, and that it is about longterm planning, directing, organizing and controlling. At a philosophical level, we deconstruct this history before reconstructing an alternative vision – one based on a broader ‘pre-modern’ heritage. Here, organization could take many forms and strategy could, correspondingly, be many things and be seen through many images. At a practical level, we use the analogy of how people are oriented and animated by maps to argue that this broader heritage simply reinstates a more pragmatic view of how everyday people use many different frameworks in developing strategy in complex environments over time. 1 Images of Strategy STEPHEN CUMMINGS AND DAVID WILSON The young lieutenant of a Hungarian detachment in the Alps sent a reconnaissance unit into the icy wilderness. It began to snow immediately, and unexpectedly continued to snow for two days. The unit did not return. The lieutenant feared that he had dispatched his own people to death. However, on the third day the unit came back. Where had they been? How had they made their way? ‘Yes,’ they said: ‘We considered ourselves lost and waited for the end. We did...

I don’t have a problem,” I said. She didn’t react. Just gestured that I remove my shoes and take the couch. She had an office like any other doctor’s, minus the smells and cold, dangerous instruments. She waited for me to talk more. I hesitated and spoke again. “I’m sure people come here with big, insurmountable problems. Girlfriends dump...
