This experiment was designed to test whether yeast is able to metabolize with different types of sugars. In this experiment the four sugars that were tested were milk sugar or lactose (disaccharide), table sugar or sucrose (disaccharide), blood sugar or glucose (monosaccharide), and starch (polysaccharide) . Specific amounts of the four sugars were mixed with a specific amount of the yeast, saccharomyces cerevisiae, separately to test how the yeast respire using different sugars.
Yeast are unicellular, single-celled organisms. Yeast has a nucleus, making them eukaryotic (Khan). Yeast is beneficial to humans because it is used in baking bread, beer and wine. The use of yeast in baking bread helps it to expand and rise (Bakeinfo). Beer, wine, …show more content…
Saccharomyces cerevisiae will be used in this experiment. Yeast is being used in this experiment because through a process of anaerobic metabolism, also known as fermentation, yeast can metabolize glucose and other sugars. It releases carbon dioxide as waste, which is a valuable ingredient in food making processes (people fmarion)
The four carbohydrates used in this experiment include,, lactose, sucrose, glucose, and starch. Lactose and sucrose are simple carbohydrates. Lactose is a carbohydrate with two sugars, a disaccharide. Sucrose is a carbohydrate with two sugars; a disaccharide (Szlaya). Glucose is a simple sugar; a monosaccharide. This means that carbohydrates like glucose that are monosaccharides, only consists of one sugar. (Utah lessonplan). Starch is a complex carbohydrate; a polysaccharide, having three or more sugars. Some food products that are sources of lactose are milk, cheese, butter, ice cream, cream soup, and many more (Cleveland Clinic). Sucrose is naturally in fruits and vegetables, but usually found in small amount. Sucrose, a main ingredient in many baked goods and processed food, is refined as table sugar.
