Calaveras Enterprise sports editor Guy Dossi spoke with Bret Harte’s head girls golf coach Rich Cathcart Tuesday afternoon. Their conversation touched on playing at the Yellowjacket Invitational, the shape of the Valley Foothill League and what courses are the most fun to play.
GD: Well Rich, on Monday your girls played in the Yellowjacket Invitational. How’d it go?
RC: We only took three girls because they moved the midseason league tournament up a week, so we are going to play that next Monday. And our girls missing two monday’s in a row wasn’t good. So there were just three girls who were able to miss class for the two weeks. So we took Jessie Thompson, Olivia Fonseca and Emma Canepa. And they did OK.
GD: I know it’s still relatively…show more content… Probably Elizabeth Kristoff and Kellie Krpan are two of our better golfers. But Jessie and Olivia are doing just fine. So, those four are pretty much interchangeable. They all take turns playing one, two, three and four. Emma Canepa played with us last year and now as a sophomore is getting better.
GD: You mentioned sophomore Emma Canepa, do you like taking young players to things like the Yellowjacket Invitational where you just tell them to do their best and see what happens?
RC: Right. That’s what golf is. You are out there and you are going against the golf course and you are just trying to do the best you can and work on shots that you have. You can see how your putting and chipping is. It’s good for them.
GD: You’ve played a couple of teams in the Valley Foothill League so far, so who looks good?
RC: I think Escalon is still one of the better teams. Although, we beat them on our course. We don’t lose many matches on our course. Sonora has won all of their matches, but we only played them with four girls. We didn’t have two of our top girls when we went over there and played them. Ripon is usually good and Linden is much improved. So, whoever can win their matches at home will probably be in the driver's
