...down the street, towards them. "Look who it is", he says. "It’s the stranger". "Alright lads", I say, weaving through the crowd of massed drinkers on the pavement. "Have a good holiday?". What do you think?”. “Just what we expected”, laughs Jack. “I‘ll see you in a moment“. I walk into the pub and wait at the bar. It’s quite empty in here. There are posters for a band on the wall, who go by the name of The Tonics, a four piece in sharp suits with floppy haircuts, who I decide might be worth checking out later. In a few moments, I’m served, with an ice cold pint of Peroni, and am heading back out onto the street. RINGING IN MY EARS is the unmistakable sound of Hammond organ, which sends a shiver down my back and a buzz into my heart and tells me that the magic carpet ride has just begun. Jack turns, as I rejoin them. “Good time in Ibiza, was it?”, he asks. “Marvellous“. “It’s alright for some”, he says. “Jetting off somewhere hot. Well, you’re looking well on it, I have to say”. “Nice of you to say so”. “Bring me back a tan like that next time you go”. “I’ll see what I can do”. We laugh. It's warm tonight. For England. I stand and sip my lager and survey the scene. Girls are standing, alone and in groups, boys are leaning against the wall, gangs are hanging round, looking for something to take their attention. Some of them are talking on their mobile phones, others are texting. “So what’s been happening here?”,I ask. "You've not missed a lot, if I'm honest...

Persuasive Essay On Year Round School

...School Hours Essay Yes, Schools in America should be year round for the following reasons. Year round school is in the best interest of communities because it saves money, increases learning, and is a comfortable schedule for students. First, we need to establish why the nine month schedule was established in the first place? The nine month schedule was made when the U.S. had mostly agriculture in the communities and the schedule let the kids be able to help their parents on the farms over the summer when they were needed. Now that most communities aren’t rural anymore this schedule is no longer needed. Next, the year round schedule saves money. How is this possible? This is possible because with the year round schedule there could be what...

Persuasive Essay On Proposition 63

...reporting's on people being killed during a shooting. Violence will never be completely terminated but what if there was a way that you can help bring the death rate down? Well there is. By voting yes on proposition 63 you support prohibiting the possession of large-capacity magazines and require individuals to first pass a background check before being granted the permission to purchase ammunition. Some people think Proposition 63 wouldn't make a difference in “California’s safety”, because nonresidents would have no restrictions on bringing ammunition into the state, and they can sell to the state’s residents if they go through a licensed vendor. It would also be pricey to law-abiding citizens who need to purchase ammunition for recreation, home defense and competition, and gun owners who have legally-purchased ammunition, would be forced to give up their private property to the government. Those who support Proposition 63 include Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom, U.S Senate Dianne Feinstein, U.S Senate Barbara Boxer, The California Democratic Party, The California Young...

Fantastic Ticket Sales

...Am I excited about it? Yes. Did I order tickets? Yes. Did I stay awake until 6am and beyond to order them? Yes. But the real question is; did I get a single ticket? No. So here I am, a raging sports enthusiast, without a single ticket. I love the Olympics! I’ve wanted to go since I was just 5 years old; and when it finally comes to London, the 150,000 tickets reserved for Britain, are squandered away to Europe just for more money! Disaster. How can anyone say it’s a remotely good system? It’s an absolute shamble. The ticket sales are more like a lottery and we know that no one ever wins that. Well; unless there are god damn lucky, filthy rich and can afford to bid for every single ticket possible! There could be a multitude of successful systems yet we insist on using this monstrosity! How do we expect to get anywhere when the ticket allocation team can’t even distribute them correctly OR evenly! A friend of mine has been given tickets to two events but here’s the funny part; they both start within half an hour of each other in different parts of London! This ticket distribution is ridiculous. I mean honestly, I could have designed a better system even though I find difficulties in distributing change to people! Why didn’t they just simplify it and have it so that each day a different event goes on sale and you have the whole day to bid, not just at 6am! Oh, and when there is a credit card glitch, the website stops the countdown so that you can actually still order...

The Necklace

...The Necklace by Guy de Maupassant (1850-1893) Translators: Albert M.C. McMaster, A.E. Henderson, Mme. Quesada, & others. The girl was one of those pretty and charming young creatures who sometimes are born, as if by a slip of fate, into a family of clerks. She had no dowry, no expectations, no way of being known, understood, loved, married by any rich and distinguished man; so she let herself be married to a little clerk of the Ministry of Public Instruction. She dressed plainly because she could not dress well, but she was unhappy as if she had really fallen from a higher station; since with women there is neither caste nor rank, for beauty, grace and charm take the place of family and birth. Natural ingenuity, instinct for what is elegant, a supple mind are their sole hierarchy, and often make of women of the people the equals of the very greatest ladies. Mathilde suffered ceaselessly, feeling herself born to enjoy all delicacies and all luxuries. She was distressed at the poverty of her dwelling, at the bareness of the walls, at the shabby chairs, the ugliness of the curtains. All those things, of which another woman of her rank would never even have been conscious, tortured her and made her angry. The sight of the little Breton peasant who did her humble housework aroused in her despairing regrets and bewildering dreams. She thought of silent antechambers hung with Oriental tapestry, illumined by tall bronze candelabra, and of two great footmen in knee breeches...
