...Senior Managers, Global Computer Solutions From: Lynette K. Lee, Vice President of Human Resources Date: October 5, 2012 Subject: Polarity Management: Autocratic vs. Participatory Management You’ve heard the term polar opposites it is used to describe objects, situations, or even people that are very different. North and South poles; yin and yang, dark and light are just a few of the hundreds of phrases used to illustrate polar opposites and their distinct differences. The term polar opposites are often used to brand or categorize things we like or good things versus things we don’t like or bad things. Polarities are persistent issues that are inevitable and unsolvable. The issues or conflicts seem very diverse, but operate at the same time. Sometimes a manager will experience a “damned if I do, damned if I don’t feeling, that is when you have a polarity. Polarity management has been around since early 1975 and continues to be a challenge to companies today. Polarities consist of two interdependent opposites that have two or more answers (Johnson, 1998). Polarities are two issues or conflicts on two far reaching ends of the spectrum, which have no reasonable solution. Each spectrum or pole has advantages as well as disadvantages (Noll, 2002). It is very important to recognize instances of polarity in management situations. If one pole is underlined or a solution is developed it leaves the other pole unresolved thus starting a vicious cycle. The value in comprehending...

...combination of cooperation and competition (termed as the “coop-comp” negotiation strategy in this study). Trust is the ultimate indicator of Chinese negotiating propensities and role choices. Research limitations/implications – The focus of this study is on Chinese negotiating style shown in large B2B negotiations with Chinese SOEs. Originality/value – Differing from most other studies on Chinese negotiating style which tend to depict the Chinese negotiator as either sincere or deceptive, this study points out that there exists an intrinsic paradox in Chinese negotiating style which reflects the Yin Yang thinking. The Chinese negotiator has a cultural capacity to negotiate both sincerely and deceptively and he/she changes coping strategies according to situation and context, all depending on the level of trust between negotiating partners. Keywords China, National cultures, Negotiating, Management skills, International business Paper type Research paper An executive summary for managers can be found at the end of this article. The People’s Republic of China (PRC) has emerged as one of the most dynamic elements in the global economy (Lardy, 2002; Nolan, 2001;...

...I asked my boyfriend, Tom, to complete the second collage depicting my personality. I chose him to do this because I feel he knows me very well now that we have been dating for two years. Our collages differed in a few ways but had the same general themes. We both included photos of The Beatles, a yin yang symbol, and the beach. We both included these three items because The Beatles are my all time favorite band, the yin yang sign is one of my favorite symbols, and the beach is my favorite place to be. I suppose this could indicate that I am more of a calm, and boring person. I don’t have any crazy hobbies such as race car driving, or skydiving...yet. Some differences in our collages include the amount of photos on each, and the types of photos that were on each. My collage was covered edge to edge with photos while Tom’s consisted of a few photos spread out across the page. Also, on the collage Tom made he seemed to focus more on my interests in foods. He included a picture of fruit, gummy bears, garlic, and pickles. These are some of my favorite foods. On my collage I focused more on my musical interests, and hobbies. This included: The Beatles, Bob Marley, Modest Mouse, tennis, scuba diving, and shopping for dresses. I found it interesting to look at the differences between the two collages. I feel the difference in amount of photos displays the overachiever part of my personality. I tend to go overboard on projects and other things in life because I am a bit of a...

...October 27th, 2015 Tai Chi vs Yoga Tai chi is a form of marital arts that originated from Ancient China. Tai chi is based on the philosophy of Taoism, more specifically on Yin and Yang. This exercise connects mental concentration, deep breathing, and actions to try and equally balance these two concepts. Tai chi is made up of two main forms – Dayoin and Tuna. Dayoin is the exertion of inner force whereas Tuna refers to deep breathing exercises. Tai Chi uses this combination of breathing and moving to calm the mind and thus can be regarded primarily as a mind exercise. There are many different styles of Tai chi such as: Chen style, Yang style, Hao Style, Wu style, Sun style, etc. Each of these styles emphasizes different variations of slow...

...Comparisons and Contrast of Jainism and Daoism Both Jainism and Daoism (Taoism) have ancient roots going back a few thousand years. Statues and yogic seals found in the Indus Valley show that Jainism was practiced by civilizations as far back as around 2500 BCE, while Daoism appears to have originated around 2000 years ago. Although Jainism is older by about 4500 years both have continued to have to be practiced by numerous followers seeking a level of enlightenment. Although having over 6 million followers little has been known about Jainism outside of India. This may be due in part to there being no written scriptures in regards to this religion for a large part of its history. Rather the teachers of Jain would orally spread their knowledge whilst wandering the land. While Jainism was more or less “contained” in India, Daoism teachings are widespread throughout the world. Unlike Jainism, Daoism is a philosophical teaching and not a religion. This may help explain why so many people around the world choose to follow it as an escape from the “industrial rat race.” Yet when compared side to side, it is easier to understand how one would choose to follow Daoism over Jainism. To say that Jainism is strict is an understatement. To follow Jainism successfully one would have to adhere to teachings such as the teachings of Mahivira, the man credited with giving Jainism the form that is practiced today. These teachings include the three jewels: Right belief, Right knowledge,...

...Introduction In my essay I am going to be discussing ‘Tragic Ballets ‘and ‘Heroines’. As a child I spent a brief period studying ballet and on a visit to Prague, in February 2013, I enjoyed watching the Russian Ballet perform 'Giselle' at the Prague State Opera House. I have often wondered why so many ballets and the female heroines in them end in tragedy. My essay will discuss the issues that female heroines face and the events that eventually bring them to their fate. I will also discuss the origins and definitions of ‘heroine’ and ‘tragedy’. In order to examine my chosen themes I started my investigation by watching, analysing and comparing the films ‘Black Swan’, ‘The Red Shoes’ and the ballet ‘Giselle’. I read the feminist writings of Marina Warner on the portrayal of women, the Catholic Church and also her book on ‘Joan of Arc. In my essay I will be discussing the themes of love, conquest, devotion, deception, spirituality and how they play a role in altering the lives of the female protagonists in various different situations and offer my own opinions on how the tragedies are formed. I will begin my comparison of the female heroines that I will be discussing, with Giselle. Figure 1'Giselle and Count Albrecht' The Russian Ballet Giselle is a poor peasant’s daughter who falls in love with Count Albrecht. Count Albrecht’s character plays the main part in the protagonist Giselle’s downfall during the ballet, as he breaks her heart when she learns that he is betrothed...

...Yincom & Yangnet Merger Speech The merger between Yincom and Yangnet has been finalized. I stand in front of you as the voice of change. This merger was a perfect match of talent within the same industry however within specialized markets. As each beginning portion of each company name we are the perfect match, Ying and Yang if you will. Yincom has been a strong competitor in creating internet solutions for a specific customer base. Yangnet has also been a strong competitor for internet solutions for the exact same reason. Thomas Jefferson once said “Honesty is the first chapter in the book of wisdom.” We will work together to ensure that this merger is successful by maintaining open and honest lines of communication on either. Just as each side of the ying and the yang remains separate but together they balance each other out. Each company can continue to compete in their respective markets however each area will no longer be alone in the competitive market. We are able to collaborate together as in order to dominate each market. Each group has similarities in how we do business and then we have specialized markets. This merger has given us the ability to use all expertise in internet business and spread that knowledge across the company. We will remain customer focused however we will become the leader in how quality is measured. Together we will work on creating the perfect circle while maintaining the highest standards. I wear them to school, shopping, and even when I go to museums. My snowboarding boots show my love of adventure and being outdoors in the calm yet fierce white snow. Broken in and molded to the shape of my feet, when wearing them I feel in touch with my surroundings. During college I intend to add more shoes to my collection in the closet. For each aspect of my personality I discover or enhance through my college years, I will find a pair of shoes to reflect it. Maybe I could get a pair of one black and one white shoe for when I learn about the Chinese culture and its belief in yin and yang. As I get to know myself better and my goals become clearer, my collection of shoes will expand. By the time I am through with college I will be ready to take a big step into to real world. Being ready for change, I believe I will only need one pair of shoes to reflect the new me. The shoes will be fun and comfortable; I will be...

Jan 18, 2006 at 04:41 AM To every thing there is always a season; there is a time to be sowing and a time to be reaping; a time to build up and a time to break down. In the same manner the Universe as a whole has its enormous turn of cycles also. Both its beginning and its extinction. From Genesis (Bible) Chapter 1 it is clearly stated that before the beginning of the entire Universe there was a void, a wide expanse of nothing. Then out of that NOTHINGNESS God formed the Heavens and the Earth. He called the light ‘Day’ and the darkness He called “Night.” Next, the formation of lands, seas and animals. To make His creation complete God finally created Man with the heritage of His Divine qualities: Man was a being of excellence, intelligence and abilities. God declared that man may use the Earth for habitation and provision for a time. That man would command lordship over His work as well as multiply and bring the Perfect Invisible Principle of life throughout the land. After having completed bearing the fruit of fulfillment, the spiritual being of man will once again unite with the Divine from whence he originally sprang. ...The Chinese Yin Yang symbol sometimes called Tai-Chi symbol. The Tai-Chi is from I-Ching. The I-Ching is the greatest foundation of Chinese philosophy. Its development is from the natural phenomena of our universe. Because I-Ching comes from nature, it should be easy. The Chinese characters of I-Ching are . The second character means a book, a profound book. The first character means ease or change. Since I-Ching is easy, some people call it as "The Book of Ease" or "The Book of Changes". | | | | By rotating the Sun chart and positioning the Winter Solstice at the bottom, it will look like this. The light color area which indicates more sunlight is called Yang (Sun). The dark color area has less sunlight (more moonlight) and is called Yin (Moon). Yang is like man. Yin is like woman. Some of the cultures believe in using traditional medicines, some believe in prayer, and some believe in herbal things for the healing, and there are more things that the different cultures may do in order to find the right cure. ...Daodejing Characterization of Early Daoist Teachers Since every chapter of the Daodejing describes Daoism in different aspects it is believed that several authors contributed to the completion of it. The Daodejing is very poetic and mysterious. The early teachers of the Daodejing seemed to pass things down that was difficult for ordinary minds to comprehend as a way to get people to analyze and understand the world around them. Meanings encrypted in different ways and metaphors constantly used seem to be a common characteristic between the early teachers. Although they were oddly written, all of the passages seemed to give a basic insight on the early teachers’ perspective of things. The Daodejing characterizes common human weakness and meant to effect the way people think or react. Early teachers believed that the truth about the “human mind” can only be sought from within. Outside influences and worldly thing will not guide you to understand yourself. Based on the Daodejing, the early teachers also believed that the understanding of self is given as a gift from nature not acquired knowledge that you just so happen to stumble upon. The text of the Daodejing offers a practical way of life and dismisses any ideas of human immortality. These passages were intended to restore peace and harmony to a world that the early teachers believed was in disarray. The text stresses the importance of learning to resolve things naturally and to restrain from unnatural reactions. The Daodejing...
