...Neurobehavioral Observation When I walked into the classroom at the Velma Thomas early childhood center, there was certainly a lot to look at. My eye was drawn to the colorful kid-made art on the wall, to the thriving indoor garden on the windowsill, and to the frazzled teacher attempting to explain the concept of sharing. The first child I noticed, however, was Laurence. Laurence is a small, lively young boy with brown skin and curly hair. He has recently turned five, making him one of the two five-year-olds in a class of 3- and 4-yr-olds. And at the moment I began my observation, he was rolling on the carpet. A classmate, Elena, took Laurence’s hand and started to pull him up off the floor. Laurence sat up, and then stood, without letting go of Elena’s hand. Elena pulled Laurence across the room towards a display of pictures of hands on the wall. Laurence pulled his hand out of Elena’s, and used it to reach out and touch the wall. He stomped his foot, and ran back to his square of carpet. Upon returning to the carpet, Laurence saw a book on the floor, a large blue textbook with a cover that proudly proclaimed, “SCIENCE.” He took hold of the book with both hands, opened it to a page near the middle, and placed the book on his head. The aforementioned frazzled teacher, Miss Rachel, said to him, “Laurence, I noticed what you’ve been doing with books today, and I wondered if you remembered what we do with books.” Laurence’s smile widened as he looked at Miss Rachel and giggled...

...balance much of our lives yet when we’re 18”, she said. Helena Johnson is a consultant on parental relations, and she says: “I can understand why a parent would think, ‘I’m just doing what I think is right for my son or daughter.’ The problem is, they’re doing exactly what’s wrong for their son or daughter,” So she thinks that by doing everything for your child, the child won’t be self-reliant, the child will be the exact opposite. ...The world is characterized by the presence of a wide range of music genres. Music plays various and different roles in the lives of individuals. In the book “High Fidelity”, Nick Hornby, the author, examines how music can be used to examine the various aspects of everyday life. In the book “High Fidelity”, Rob, the main character sets out to associate various events in his life with his forever-changing tastes in music. The main character in “High Fidelity” uses music to put things into perspective and re-examine some important aspects of his life. On the other hand, Alan Ruisbridger is of the view that music can change people’s lives for the better. In his book “Play it Again”, Ruisbridger tells the story of how the main character learnt to play the piano and ended up becoming a better person in the course of his lessons. Both Hornby and Ruisbridger are giving testaments of how music can play an important role in an individual’s life. In addition, both authors focus on the positive influences that music can have on people’s lives. Music has a hidden element and it is not easy to understand. Furthermore, it is true that music has the power to impact positive changes on an individual’s life. This essay explores the different ways in which music can improve our lives and change them for the better. Ruisbrigder is of the opinion that music can help us to learn ‘new tricks’ even at an advanced age. Using music as a learning tool is not a new concept because this strategy has previously...

...it really their fault? Or have their peers failed them? Studies show that amygdala deficiencies can appear long before the person commits a crime. In an experiment, children who failed to show fear conditioning became criminals in the future and people with lower ACC activity are more likely to commit crimes than those with higher ACC activity (Miller.) When the brain’s association areas are deficit, it inhibits a person’s ability to reason. It is important that people with deficiencies are given the treatment they need, and it is important to start when they are children. When compared to a control group, toddlers who were placed in an enrichment program showed better brain functioning at age 11 and a 34% reduction in criminal behavior (Miller.) Similarly, prisoners given vitamin supplements committed 26.3% less crimes than the control group and when assigned to a 10 week yoga program, showed improved impulse control (Miller.) Even though sometimes the brain does not function how it is supposed to, it can be improved with help. If more prisons considered this, they would help decrease the amount of crime. People living in impoverished areas are more likely to commit crimes and to be targeted by police. Children living in poverty have lower education attainment, increased school dropout, lowered IQs, increased behavior problems, and increased psychiatric disorders (Household Poverty And Nonfatal Violent Victimization, 2008–2012). Instead of punishing the poor, the United States...

...there were running bets about who was going to drive me to the hospital so they too could get out of work. Needless to say, I spent way too much time at my job, but I love the girls I work with and didn’t want to leave them stuck for 8 weeks Christmas season, though I knew that it was inevitable. It was warm for mid-October though, I remember driving home with the window a quarter of the way down and singing to the radio. Without a doubt I was singing some country song and dreaming of getting my shoes off, sitting down, and having one of the only things that didn’t make me feel sick as a dog; a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Twenty minutes and I would finally get to relax. At the house I was so uncomfortable, even in my favorite gray yoga pants and a tank top. I told my significant other, (NAME); I might go into labor that evening, though I had absolutely no proof or reasoning to this other than a feeling. No more than an hour later I started having contractions. I told (NAME)he ought to go to sleep. He resisted at first but I know how cranky he gets when he doesn’t get his beauty sleep and I did not want to deal with him being cranky. I took my phone out to the living room and sunk into the couch with a blanket and tried to keep myself busy. I texted a few good friends along with (NAME)from work giving her the “I told you so...

...Self Evaluation and Personal Development Plan Creating a personal development plan involves more than simply contemplating what you want from your life and how to go about achieving it. If you want to create a personal development plan that helps you to achieve your goals, preparation is the key. To prepare, one must have a great deal of self-awareness. This includes clear understanding of personal values and ethics, analyzing personality characteristics, evaluation of learning styles and identifying strengths, weaknesses, motivators, opportunities and threats. Preparing for this personal development plan has been a thought-provoking study encouraging self-evaluation, reflection and realization within the context of self-improvement in career education and relationships. I have analyzed my personality traits to understand how each correlates with my strengths, weaknesses and tendencies. I have learned that my own perceptions and actions may be motivated by feelings that influence me instinctively. Although many traits stem from my personality, that doesn’t mean I can’t develop and improve. I can learn how to use my strengths in better ways and turn weaknesses into strong suits. I have learned through the Jungian Typology that my personality tendencies are moderately introverted, sensing and feeling, and distinctive judging (ISFJ). I have studied the key traits of this personality type and contemplated how it defines me in relationships, parenthood...

...PARENTING STYLES Developmental psychologists have long been interested in how parents impact child development. However, finding actual cause-and-effect links between specific actions of parents and later behavior of children is very difficult. Some children raised in dramatically different environments can later grow up to have remarkably similar personalities. Conversely, children who share a home and are raised in the same environment can grow up to have astonishingly different personalities than one another. Despite these challenges, researchers have uncovered convincing links between parenting styles and the effects these styles have on children. During the early 1960s, psychologist Diana Baumrind conducted a study on more than 100 preschool-age children (Baumrind, 1967). Using naturalistic observation, parental interviews and other research methods, she identified four important dimensions of parenting: * Disciplinary strategies * Warmth and nurturance * Communication styles * Expectations of maturity and control Based on these dimensions, Baumrind suggested that the majority of parents display one of three different parenting styles. Further research by also suggested the addition of a fourth parenting style (Maccoby & Martin, 1983). The Four Parenting Styles 1. Authoritarian Parenting In this style of parenting, children are expected to follow the strict rules established by the parents. Failure to follow such rules usually results in punishment...
