One theme that is predominant in the novel is genius. In the beginning Shirley Piper calls Yolanda a genius. Yolanda to make sure that she understood the definition of a genius went to the library. At the library she read numerous definitions but only one grabbed her interest, John Hershey’s definition of genius, which said, “True genius rearranges old material in a way never seen before.” (Fenner, pg28) This is when Yolanda realizes that she is not a genius that the true genius in the family is Andrew. I chose the harmonica as a 3-D visual to represent the theme. The harmonica is what makes Andrew the true genius. With his harmonica he is able to recreate sounds of the real world.
