..."It's better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all." Pain. Recently I had a little talk with an old friend about Pain. It is one of the few certainties in life, to feel pain, to one degree or another. I have heard it said that the most excruciating pain a person can feel is a snapped femur. Ooh yes, I have no doubt that would hurt, it's the biggest bone in your body! That's physical pain though, physical pain, while is not truly a friend to any of us, is bound by time, with therapy, medication, and persistence, it goes away. Emotional pain however, cuts to the heart. And it lasts long past the time when you think you've had all you can take. How can you heal the pain that stems from love itself? Patty Smith said it best with her song, "Sometimes love just ain't enough" To have a true insurmountable love in your heart for the one you call your own, and to know that it will never be enough. That all that love, need and desire you have for them will never fade yet... Will be rejected for that of another. I've been trying to describe the feeling, put it into words... Its a feeling of incalculable desperation and pain, like being in an ice cold pond, under a sheet of ice and you can see the warm sun in the sky and up on the other side of the wall of ice, ungrateful basking in its warmth and breathing without a thought, standing just over you and not hearing your cries. All the while you are beating away at the ice trying to get just one gasp of the sweet...

...TYPE/TOPIC OF JOURNAL: Do you have Jelly? JOURNAL CONTENT: Section 1 – Critical Incident The nurse that I was observing had taken her lunch and I decided to take this time to go ahead and log in to the computer and look into some of the records of the patients. I hear someone saying help, help. I look around and see no one except TCU students that are sitting at computers picking out their patients for the next day. So I quickly get up and head in to the room. This is not one of my patients, but it is a patient that I had helped with earlier. I head in and introduce myself again while asking the women what I can do to help her. She appears to be about 70 years of age and she is crying. I don’t see anything that appears to be physically hurting her so I ask her what is wrong and she says she is in pain, saying the worst pain she has ever been in. She says it’s as much pain as she was in when she came in. She says her catheter hurts. I know she doesn’t have one I helped take it out earlier. I tell her that she doesn’t have a catheter in anymore and that I am going to go get her nurse for her. She says okay thank you. I go to get the nurse and he is now sitting at a computer and I tell him the situation. He says, “Yeah I just gave her some pain meds and anxiety meds it should work in like 15 min or so.” He was not acting as if he was going to go in there. I say okay I will go let her know. I head back in the room and her hands are in the air and she is crying and praying...

...Have you ever had a headache before? If so then you’re probably familiar with the pounding pain that wouldn’t go away. As I write this, the pounding sensation on the right side of my brain is undeniable. It has been there for almost two years and has remained twenty- four hours a day, seven days a week. Chronic migraines have an impact on every aspect of life. So you are probably wondering how this neurological disorder came about? Well I still don’t have an answer as to how it happened myself. It all occurred one evening in November on my way home from work. My vision rapidly began to blur until things were no longer visible in my right eye. Accompanying the vision was a sharp stabbing pain in my eye, which ran across the section of my right brain. I called my parents and was rushed to the emergency room. When I arrived they rushed me down to testing where they ran a CT which later returned normal. After testing returned normal they went through a medical history, gave me a shot of dilaudid, and sent me on my way home. I was hoping that would be the last time I would experience that pain and the last trip to the emergency room. Unfortunately, the pain continued for a week or two, along with the blurred vision. I decided to see my doctor, who sent me to an ophthalmologist, who then sent me to a neurologist. My pain continued to increase and I remained in a dark room, in bed a lot of the time. The ophthalmologist ran tests on my eyes and found decreased vision in my right...

...English 110 AA Dr. M Brennan February 16, 2014 In the short story “The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas” by Ursula K. Le Guin the theme is that in order to be truly happy, one must stand up for what’s right, even if it means leaving everything that they know. Society creates traditions and ways of thinking that are not easy for everyone to follow. In Omelas, the citizens have the choice to ignore the suffering of a child locked in a cellar, or leave the life and the city they are familiar with. The people of Omelas must ask themselves whether it is better for a child to suffer for the city’s happiness and wealth, or should the city suffer, just to give the child a shot at happiness? It is ironic because Omelas is a utopian city however they treat a feeble minded child horribly for the good of their city. The symbols and themes of this story play a huge role of how I interpreted the story, such as the horse, bird/swallow, flute player, and the cellar child acting as a ‘scapegoat’. “The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas” begins with the narrator describing a beautiful utopian city called Omelas. It is a city with more happiness than can be imagined. The scene shifts from a bright Summer Festival to one of a child locked in a cellar. One reads of the isolation, neglect, abuse, and fear that this child suffers, and all of the citizens are aware of what the child is going through. They have also seen the child and decided that they are helpless. They believe that the child must suffer...

...Bottles Do you remember when your mum used to place a hot water bottle in the middle of your bed ready for bedtime? Bet, like many, a hot water bottle is not amongst the must-have items in homes nowadays and if that is the case then why not? Hot water bottles are not just for warming bedsheets on a cold winter’s night, they have so many more benefits. Period Pains Most women will agree that the worst part of being a woman is the period pains they suffer every month – some worse than others. Those in the know, thanks to mothers, aunts, grandmothers, reach for a hot water bottle and hug it tight. The warmth from the hot water bottle acts in the same way as placing a hot flannel on a painful part of our bodies. Both help to take away the pain and discomfort. Backache Back pain can be particularly painful and for regular suffers adding some heat to the afflicting areas brings some much needed relief. The heat from a hot water bottle stimulates the blood flow and encourages the healing nutrients in our body to gather around the affected area of the back. Toothache For those who have ever had a toothache know the pain can be excruciating and trying to find something that will alleviate some of the pain makes the situation worse. Adding some heat to the cheek will help bring some relieve, but don’t go putting a red hot water bottle straight onto your face. If possible, try using one that is covered or wrap the hot water bottle in a pillowcase – you don’t want...

...2013 The Pleasure Scale As we go through life we will experience different events that will help shape the scales that we use in life. Biss talks about how pain is our own experience and no one else can feel the same intensity of pain that we feel at any given point in the day. I believe that it can also be turned around no one can feel the same type of pleasure that I feel. There is no way that I can write a scale of pleasure that fits every person that is on the earth; the only scale that I can make is one where I use the pleasure that have happened to me during my life time. As we age we tend to go through events that will change our outlook on life. Something that may have been a pleasure to us when we were younger may not be pleasure to use when we are older. Take for instance playing on the playground as a young child, that was to time of the day we all waited for we got to go outside and play on the jungle gym. That would not bring me pleasure it would make me depressed just for the fact that I can no longer play on the jungle gym because I am not small enough to enjoy to the level that I would want to. 0 Imagine a world where there is no such thing as pain. Now that you have done that do you think that there would be pleasure in that world? If there is no pain there can be no pleasure they go hand in hand. If you have never felt pain then how can you know what pleasure is? Biss talks about how there is not an absolute zero on the pain scale that she has designed (171)...

...“The reason some people have turned against you and walked away from you without reason, has nothing to do with you. It is because I have removed them from your life because they cannot go where I am taking you next. They will only hinder you in your next level because they have already served their purpose in your life. Let them go and keep moving.Greater is coming.” Says The Lord. -Anonymous. This means that just because someone leaves your life you shouldn’t let that define you, don’t make mistakes and choices you wouldn’t wanna live with. In my story I chose God and if I didn’t I would have been different and hurt. My life before the change was great. I had friends, a family, and a relationship.Throughout the years I lost some people and gained some people in my life. The reason I wasn’t treated so good by those people, and I tried not to let loosing them affect me, because I of course had others in my life plus I was only a kid. I was happy all the...

...after you've started sleeping with her. Other patterns that you've used on her have anchored immense pleasure to you. The Door creates an anchor for the loss of that pleasure. -*** The ideal setting for the power of the door is right after you've had intercourse and you're in bed with the girl. -------------------------------------You're fooling around in bed, and you say, (you) "sweetheart, what's that over there?" (point towards the door). (her answer) "well you know, that's a door, silly." (you) "yeah, you know... I'm a real positive person, but.. I mean, can you imagine.. I mean, you don't know what can happen from day to day, when you think about it in your mind. I mean, what would happen if I walked out that door and the door closed and as the door closed, it slammed shut, and no matter what you did, you could not open the door and you knew that you would never be able to look into my eyes again and you'd never be able to hear my voice again and you'd never be able to feel my touch again." (her answer) Ok, right here is where she starts going, "I don't like this door business at all." (you) And at this time you just reassure her.. "ok, alright sweetheart, you're right.
