The poem under review in this paper is Robert Browning's “my last Duchess” based on historical events involving the duke of Ferrara (Alfonso) who lived back in the 16th century. The duke is the speaker of the poem about the affection she showed to othermen. It's suggested that this affection causes the narratorto kill her. He tells us that he is entertaining an emissary whom his soon wife to be has sent to negotiate terms of the marriage. He takes him on a tour in his palace, in his gallery specifically. He comes across a portrait painted directly on the wall and volunteers to tell the circumstances in which it was painted and the fate of his unfortunate former wife. He says that his wife was a flirt, she would smile at every man and described her behavior as “disgraceful”, until he gave commands that all her smiles would stop at once –to have her killed-. Having finished his story, he moved on to the next antique as if the past one was nothing. The poet is hiding behind the persona of a real-life Duke who has coldly murdered his young wife and speaks of her as if she was nothing. The title of the poem "my last duchess" suggests that the duke had had more than one duchess that shows greatly how women were treated like objects and properties that were made for men's pleasure. so we can reveal from that ,The dominant theme of this poem is anti-feminism. The way women were perceived at that age is clearly evident in the way the Duke speaks of his wife as if she were a property, they have been never considered as human beings that have feelings and emotions .the masterpiece of his gallery, nothing more with no affections towards her whatsoever. He made himself a God, a judge that produced a verdict and executed the death penalty. As if smiling was a crime when a women commits it. The title suggests so much about the content of the poem, it clearly says that the Duchess

‘of Mice and Men’ Serves as a Reminder That Dreaming Is Futile. How Far Do You Agree with This Representation of the Text and Its Key Themes?

...‘Of Mice and Men’ serves as a reminder that dreaming is futile. How far do you agree with this representation of the text and its key themes? To first answer the question we need to define a key element, what are dreams? When we dream we contemplate the possibility of doing something or indulging in fantasies about something greatly desired. Yet they are necessary to keep the levels of hope high in people to stand for what they believe in whether it be the inadequacies of society or something else. Furthermore without incorporating dreams and having something to achieve in our life will result in an endless stream of days that have little connection or meaning. The representation of dreams occurs via prejudice and stereotypes- Crooks, because he is black in a racist culture- seems to be no hope for him; Curley’s wife, only woman on the farm and regarded as a tart- will never feel wanted, another hopeless situation; Candy, one-handed- can’t do the same work as the others and is old- can’t socialize with anyone, lonely and isolated. These situations give reason for dreaming as it becomes a paradise for those who wish for something more in their life and acts as a beacon of hope yet over time dreams either materialize or they question reality and in the book no one achieves or has achieved their dream- Lennie and George, Curley’s wife and Curley. Dreams will always be a source of hope but if they are not achieved you begin to realise that they are futile which is why to some extent...

...Kent. I thought the King had more affected the Duke of Albany than Cornwall. Glou. It did always seem so to us; but now, in the division of the kingdom, it appears not which of the Dukes he values most, for equalities are so weigh'd that curiosity in neither can make choice of either's moiety. Kent. Is not this your son, my lord? Glou. His breeding, sir, hath been at my charge. I have so often blush'd to acknowledge him that now I am braz'd to't. Kent. I cannot conceive you. Glou. Sir, this young fellow's mother could; whereupon she grew round-womb'd, and had indeed, sir, a son for her cradle ere she had a husband for her bed. Do you smell a fault? Kent. I cannot wish the fault undone, the issue of it being so proper. Glou. But I have, sir, a son by order of law, some year elder than this, who yet is no dearer in my account. Though this knave came something saucily into the world before he was sent for, yet was his mother fair, there was good sport at his making, and the whoreson must be acknowledged.- Do you know this noble gentleman, Edmund? Manliness

...Many people think that a boy becomes a man when his facial hair starts to grow out, how much money he makes, and what he starts to wear. A man is not defined by his age or looks. Men can have all the money in the world or looks but that doesn’t necessarily make them a man. Men are not born but men are made and raised. Responsibilities, maturity, and respect for women turn a boy into a man. Many boys grow up fast to take they can take care of their families at a early age. Because of no father figure around boys usually end up the man of the household, and start working. Therefore age never determines when you become a man or not. Many 15 years old take many responsibilities while some don’t know the meaning of responsibilities. A man is responsible for keeping food in the fridge, paying the bills, keeping clothes on, etc. “Being a dad is the most manliest job you will ever have”(144) Many young boys today become dads at a very early age and most of them end up not taking the responsibility of their child. “Fathers have stopped passing down the art of manliness to the next generation”. Many fathers neglect their families and children and let them be on their own. This means not having a male figure around for the little boys. Boys look up to their fathers and want to see a good role model. They need a man figure in their lives to teach them how to be a man. How will a boy learn how to be a man if his own father is not around to teach him about manliness and responsibilities...

12 Angry Men

...In the beginning of this movie there is a lot of communication going on between all the jurors. When it is came time to a vote on whether or not the victim will be guilty or not there is one man who stands out. During the trial he was observing and taking down notes in his mind about the case. Others were also doing the same thing, but did not take in account how to analyze the situation like the old man did. This vote/tally by the whole group is basically a system. They all use this system to see where they all stand on the verdict. The old man decides to state his individuality because these factors: his beliefs, values and morals. This man has a belief that you cannot just send a young man off to possibly die without having talked about it first. He also made this decision based on the context on the situation. He knew some of the people in the room would be too scared to voice their own opinion.  Others people’s belief though in the room are not in the right place. Some are more worried about a baseball game or money. Others are basing some things off their background such as the one of the other older gentlemen and his issues with his children. Their background experiences all reflect their actions and attitudes during the whole movie. This was also due to the perception of the situation they were in. Their attitudes and values were also a big influence on them during the movie. The old man that first voted not guilty was definitely a leader. He also had very high self-esteem...

Arguments Against Interracial Dating

...Initially, a male’s physique is what catches my eye first. A tall, muscular built guy with dark brown skin is how I like my potential mates to  look. Though I am not against interracial dating, my preference is African American heterosexual males. With a nice smile and a deep toned voice, I cannot resist. I don’t like dating guys who are exactly my age. I don’t feel as if they are mature enough to handle my intellect. I think I am attracted to guys who are very much like me. Not saying that I don’t enjoy childish play, I just enjoy the company of men who are at least 1 to 3 years older than me. A man of God would be the best thing ever, but as long as he has a relationship with God, I am willing to accept him. At the age of 22 or 23, I don’t expect a guy to have it all together, but I do at least expect them to have a plan for their future. I would like for my mate to have stability; a decent place to stay, a car, and a decent job. I like my partner to show off their masculinity; aggressive, defensive, protective, and providing who doesn’t mind the “heavy lifting,” however, in private, I like to see a...

Pay Discrimination

...Pay Discrimination The article I have chosen to report on is a news article on the recent reversal of pay that women in their 20s have seen with women in this age bracket now reported by official government statics provided by ONS (the Office for national Statistics), to be earning 1.7 percent more than men of the same age in full time work. The article also covers the issues of underpaying to the young, paying under the minimum wage and the issue of female pay discrimination within other age groups. The article is written by the independents economic editor Sean O’Grady and was published on the 9th of December 2010. It has been more than forty years since the order for equal pay and this year is the first time women in any age category have been shown to earn more than men. In the article is suggests that the reason for this is the recent rise in women graduating from university. It then goes on to say that the overall difference in pay is down 2% on 2009 to just over 10%, this is still a very sizable gap but little compared to the recorded 36.5% in 1971. So why has the gap shrunk? Why is there still a large difference despite laws being in place to tackle the difference for 40 years? In this essay I hope to go into depth about these issues alongside others raised in the article such as paying under the minimum wage. It is widely known that women in full time jobs are often held back by having a family. They can be discriminated against and not given a fair chance when...

...a videotape of his police interview telling officers that he shot both men after he came home from school. Vincent Romero and Tim Romans were found dead in Romero's home in St. Johns, Arizona. Vincent Romero and Tim Romans were found dead in Romero's home in St. Johns, Arizona. Authorities released the tape Tuesday. The boy, sitting cross-legged in an overstuffed armchair, initially denied involvement in the shootings but later said he shot his already wounded father "because he was suffering." The two officers questioning the boy press him to tell the truth, with one saying at one point, "If you're not honest with me, if you're not truthful, it's not going to look good." The boy later appears to admit to shooting his father, saying, "After I shot him once he was still moving, I think I shot him again." He says on the tape he shot both men twice. Police released the first 12 minutes of the tape, which did not include the alleged confession, earlier Tuesday and released the remainder of the tape late Tuesday afternoon. Video Watch police interrogate the boy » The boy is charged with killing his father, Vincent Romero, 29, along with Tim Romans, 39, a man who rented a room in Romero's home in St. Johns, Arizona. Just Like That

...Just Like That & Indian Camp Comparative analyses, The two short stories are quite alike, in both stories there a little naive boy who we follow from their point of view, two macho men who seems to be thinking about themselves. And both have a life changing moment for a little innocent boy. Nick is the main character in Indian camp, he is also the only one we see from the inside and outside. His father calls him Nicky one time, on their way home from the Indian camp to hold what is left of his childhood. When they were sailing over the river to the Indian camp, ‘Nick lay back with his father’s arms around him’ so we can see that he had gone trough a little development in is growth from a young boy, to a man. In the other short story the growing up process had gone terribly wrong, a man with a relationship to the boy is unknown, was shot dead. They were out shooting kangaroos’, and the boy did not want to. So when the man said ‘‘if you can’t do it now you never will’’ he probably believed that he had no other choice than shoot a kangaroo to become a man. I believe the plots are different, in just like that, the climax is building up to one single sentence, ‘‘The crow barked’’ and then the climax was realised. When in Indian Camp the suicide was suddenly and therefore quite choking for me. The fact that the baby was not his could be a big shame to bear, so he took the coward solution of taking his own life. Life and death is also a theme in the short stories, so to...

A Study of Pay Inequity Between Genders

...A Study of pay Inequity between Genders   Abstract As long as an American woman is putting in the same amount of hours with the same qualifications and experience in the same occupation as an American male, and yet taking home a wage that is any lower, she is not being treated fairly as an equal. Contrary to many arguments, it is unquestionable that a wage gap exists, and while there are various ideas as to the most probable cause, there is no reason why this gap should continue to go uncorrected or unchanged. Our government should take concrete steps to close the gender wage gap because it violates women’s rights and equality. The story begins at a local Radio Shack, it is Friday, payday. As employees open their paychecks, they are awaiting their annual raise. As one employee, Neha opens up her paycheck she finds she has not yet received a raise; she has waited all year for this raise. She is very sad to find she did not receive one. She begins to think maybe she did something wrong. She starts to think back through the year, and cannot seem to come up with any solutions as to why she did not receive one. She worked especially hard that year in hopes to receive a good raise and felt she deserved to be recognized for it. In the break room she overheard her co-worker John bragging to their colleagues about his second raise. Now John is making a dollar twenty five more per hour than her even though they both have been working at Radio Shack for...
