You Only Live Once

...for my parents, because they waited many years before deciding on having children. I never had the opportunity to live the same life many children were able to experience because of that decision. Due to their fairly old age, my parents were sometimes struggling to keep up with my siblings and I as growing up. Even though doing a great job raising us, it didn’t go unnoticed that the years were taking their toll on my parents one after another, much sooner than the parents with kids our age should’ve. Similarly to my parents, my wife Serena and I were married last year at young ages 20 and 23 respectively. Even though we both have ambitious plans for our near future – Serena heading out to Med school while I’m going to keep on studying computer science and possibly even attend in a Law School later on - in planning out our lives we do not want to make the same mistake that my parents once made. We want to have our first child before the age of thirty-five because we want to be physiologically healthy, we want to have energy to spend with our children, and start our family at young age. The first reason I want to have children before the age of 35 is so that Serena and I are both physiologically healthy and readily able to conceive a child. Though we are still in the beginning stages of our marriage, being healthy and active is an incredibly important part of our lives. If we are financially able to have children at a younger age than 35, our bodies, especially reproductive organs...

...acceptable behavior—because hey, why not? YOLO! The carpe diem sentiment of “you only live once” has a long history predating its punchy acronymic clipping. Garson O’Toole, on his Quote Investigator blog, traces variations on the theme back to the 18th century, as in this line from Samuel Richardson’s novel “Clarissa”: “We live but once in this world; and when gone, are gone from it for ever.” The exact wording of “you only live once” begins cropping up in the late 19th century, and by 1937 it was popular enough to be used as the title of a Fritz Lang film noir. One wry elaboration, credited to the comedian Joe E. Lewis in 1952, is “You only live once, but if you work it right, once is enough.” Today’s young purveyors of YOLO do indeed appear to be trying to work it right, though what that means is up for debate. Eble’s students illustrate its typical use, as a carefree tag to explain an impulsive choice: “You want to park illegally in this spot? YOLO!” “Should I buy these shoes or pay rent? YOLO!” The word has also found favor as a verb, as in this Yelp review of a Jersey City pizzeria: “All the times I come home after a night of YOLO-ing, I crave a delish slice to soak up the booze and sober me up.” But as the term has circulated over the past several months, a YOLO backlash has set in. Jason Salcedo, a high school senior from Stuart, Fla., recently blogged that YOLO is now “used by teens only as an...

Living the Yolo Lifestyle

...slang term is YOLO. If you are over 25, YOLO likely means nothing to you. If you are under 25, you may be so familiar with YOLO that you’re already completely sick of it. A tip to the oldsters: YOLO is an acronym for “You Only Live Once.” It shot to fame earlier this year thanks to the rapper Drake, whose song “The Motto” has the hook, “You only live once, that’s the motto...YOLO, and we ’bout it every day, every day, every day.” After a video for the song was released in February, the buzzword spread quickly among the high school and college-age set by word of mouth, not just in person but through the turbocharged vehicle of social media. How quickly? Consider the lists of slang compiled every semester by students of Connie Eble, a professor of English at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. YOLO was entirely absent from the submissions by Eble’s fall 2011 classes. By the spring semester, YOLO had become the most frequently mentioned slang term among the students, just edging out “totes” for “totally” and “cray” (or “cray-cray”) for “crazy.” What accounts for the meteoric rise of YOLO, and how has it gone virtually unnoticed by nonmillennials? Its appeal to the youthful is self-evident. YOLO as a shorthand mantra defines youth, on a certain level. What is teenagehood if not the adventurous, often foolhardy, desire to test the limits of acceptable behavior—because hey, why not? YOLO! The carpe diem sentiment of “you only live once” has a long history predating...

The Generation of Consumerisum

...Consumerism Fight Club shows us that consumerism plays a huge role in our everyday lives, everywhere you look there are adds drawing your attention for the soul purpose of selling things that are not needed, advertising has made it extremely easy to become addicted to the basic consumption of goods. All of society at some point wants to fit in so they buy what they believe to be is the new “HOT” item or what television says will make their lives easier, and by doing so people become part of a superficial world that is obsessed by material possessions and forget what truly matters, such as our most basic needs and ourselves. Once we have become part of this world we start defining ourselves by what we own, not by the type of people we truly are. Jack (bathroom) “I had become a slave to the Ikea nesting instinct”, with the consumption of goods people begin to feel a false sense of self. People who are unhappy with their lives use shopping as a copping mechanism to fill the void they have, and this is what starts their addiction to consumerism. Jack (walking to the kitchen) “what kind of dinning set defines me”, some people with social and emotional problems use material possessions to define them selves because it is one of the only things that make them feel better, along with telling who they are. Jack (bar) “I was close to being complete”. Shopping gives us a false sense of completion, once making a purchase people feel complete and have a sense of wholeness. This is the high...

Best Ways to Give Up the Ghost

...Best Ways to Give Up the Ghost You only live once but if you do it right, once is enough. The thing is we mess it up most of the time. But I will show you the best ways to die that even at the very last moment, you can catch a glimpse of happiness. Included on the list is to have an honorable death, to be a hero! Buddhism Versus Taoism

...thoughts of how to live their life. These two philosophies differ in how they believe to live their lives, and in their goals on what to achieve. I found these two schools of thoughts interesting because of how similar they are except for subtle differences. Taoism is a philosophy that is confusing to read about its not a philosophy with teachings like Buddhism. Taoism is about falling in line with the natural order and keeping the cycle balanced. Buddhism is about learning the dharma's or teachings, and reaching enlightenment to break the spiral and stop suffering. These philosophies over time became religions, and later in China they eventually get brought together as one religion. Buddhism believed in nirvana reaching enlightenment which meant to relieve oneself from being reborn. Buddhist believed life was suffering so they kept themselves unattached to earthly things including family. Buddhism is living in the present and centered around practice, and the four noble truths. In The Buddha and his Teachings: the four noble truths are: " life is suffering, origin, assertion, way to lead assertion." (Bercholz and Kohn 3-222)They learn from a teacher. The teachings are called dharma's. This philosophy is individualized of letting go of earthly possessions. In The Buddha and his Teachings, "it took the Bodhisattva sixteen years to learn the dharma's and reach enlightenment." (Bercholz and Kohn 3-222) Buddhism gives you a path (the Way), but it's not a path to live everyday life...

Symbolizing the Journey

...Symbolizing the Journey Introduction Visualize if you can a small child. She is about five years old with bouncy blonde curls that lie upon her tiny shoulders. She is kneeling over a small creature on what seems to be a deserted road. As she begins to weep uncontrollably until her little body is shaking as if she were standing on a fault line during an earthquake. If you look over her tiny shoulder a small white dog lies upon a gravel road. The dog’s eyes seem to be squinting yet all of the dust from the dirt road is almost completely covering its tiny, furry, body. But what is wrong with the dog? Is it dead or only merely injured? How did it get there and can it be saved? These questions that are shaped in the readers mind is indicative of a short story that uses not only imagery but symbols to tell a story. The picture you have formed in your head of the small, sad little girl and her beloved dog is an example of symbolism of the journey. While literally the dog is dead this may also be a symbolism of a girl losing the only thing in her little life that she trusted in a world that has abandoned her like the empty road she finds herself on. The symbolism of the journey and how two authors used this theme is the topic of this paper. Thesis While both Jean Rhys “Used to Live Here Once” and Eudora Weltly, in “A Worn Path” use symbolism and exposition one story is also about death and the other is about helping her grandchild’s life, yet many of the words used in “A Worn...
