Through every stage of our lives we experience change, learn how to adopt, and except our new expectations and responsibilities. In later adulthood we shift our focus on coming to terms with the way we lived our lives. We try to not hold any regrets for the decisions we have made and we start to look at life differently. It is important to remember that just because individuals enter the later adulthood life span does not mean they are not capable of doing things. However, for some individuals entering this stage of their life, they may need assistance to ensure they are being taken care of. Coming to a nursing home or living assistance facility for your loved one is a big decision to make and a step in their right direction for their safety and well-being. According to Wolff (2013), “Nowadays, nursing homes not only concentrate on prevention and treatment of chronic diseases and illnesses affecting the elderly, they also take into consideration the quality of life and life satisfaction of their own residents” (p. 151). I am glad to answer your questions and put your concerns at ease. In order to do this I would like to explain a few areas of later adulthood to you, what the individual may experience, and how a nursing home can help them. The first thing we need to discuss is the change and needs of the elder family member. As mentioned before just because the individual is entering this life stage it does not mean they are incapable of living. There are many famous individuals who have entered into their 60’s, 70’s and 80’s and still garden, write books, and work. What is great it is that people are living longer, healthier lives and are able to remain independent for much longer than before. However, because our society views later adulthood and these individuals as being senile, incapable, and incompetent it makes the elderly individual start viewing themselves in this way. Here we like to remind all of our residents that they are still capable of doing things that are fun, interesting, and for themselves. It may take them longer, but we are here to help them through that. We offer religion, crafts, sports, and other activities to help keep our residents active and moving. When we enter retirement some individuals find themselves having to adjust to their new role in life. They have to find their new routine, ways to socialize, and stay active. Unfortunately for some elder individuals they are forced into retirement because of health or their employer pushed them in that direction. If the individual was at their previous job for years they may start to question their worth because their employer looked past them for promotions. Instead of looking at their knowledge, skills, and capabilities to do the job they see them as being incompetent, slower, and not worth paying more, so instead they push them to retire and hire younger individuals for less. Later Adulthood is the last stage of our life span and one that consist of a lot of adjustment. These individuals find their now in retirement, their families may involve them less in decisions that are made, and the government does not meet their needs such as assistance in living arrangements and medical care. This causes the individual to become disengaged from society. However, can we blame them? Our society has such a negative view on the elderly population. Regardless of their thoughts and opinions on the elderly we have to remember they were once, just as capable as we are in our younger years. Their knowledge, life experiences, and wisdom are something we should be appreciative of, something we can learn from. With the elderly population growing because more individuals are living longer due to exercise, eating healthy, and taking care of themselves it is important for the Government to ensure there are the correct resources available to them. Currently the rise in healthcare cost has put a strain on family and the elderly individual. The retirement bill is large and will continue to grow, which results in individuals needing to rely on their pensions, savings, and social security benefits. However, those things may not be enough to accommodate the needs of the elderly individual. Another area the family and elderly individual can look toward is Medicare. Medicare has two options available for individuals 65 and older. One part is, Medicare covers the medical costs and needs of the elderly, and the second part helps pay physicians services, ER visits, tests and X-Rays that may be needed, and ambulance services. The individual has the choice to choose which option they would like to receive from Medicare. However, this may not be enough and that is when social security, pensions, and savings help. There is then the worry that if elderly individuals needs financial assistance and looks at those options the cost of living and their daily needs become stressed. As the director I also want to comment on other areas of struggle or difficulty that your loved one may be facing. It is not only about the elderly themselves, but about their spouse and family members. It is important to know that other areas of the individuals’ life has been altered or changed in one aspect or another. If your loved one has a spouse and they suffer or suffered from health issues that resulted in your loved one caring for them, this can put a strain on your loved one. They may face the need to change roles with their loved one. Elderly suffer from a list of illnesses and struggles and some of those are arthritis, heart conditions, hypertension, osteoporosis, Alzheimer, problems with their vision and hearing, as well as depression. When these illnesses or struggles are being faced the healthy loved one may find themselves having to make decisions that they once never had to worry about. These decisions may be financial decisions, health decisions, and living arrangements. All of these new areas that the healthy loved one has to face can cause great stress and feelings of being over-whelmed. Your loved one can also feel depressed, angry and frustrated. It is important for the family to let the loved one know that it is okay and they are not alone. With the increase of adults living into their final life span of later adulthood that means marriages are lasting longer. With these marriages the couples are able to work out conflict, learn how to compromise, gain more patience with each other, and the result is a happier married life. When a married couple are both living, have been independent for so many years it is hard for them to make the decision to enter a nursing home. Remaining together and having their freedom is important to remain happy. I would like to inform you that we offer single or coupled rooms because privacy is important for elder individuals. They need to have their space, feel independent, and need time to relax. When the individual starts to feel overwhelmed being able to go to their own room or shared room with a loved one or friend they are able to escape and recollect their thoughts and feelings. This is not the easiest subject to discuss, but one that is just as important as the rest, and that is the loss of a loved one. When a couple has been married for many years the loss of their loved one is not easy. The surviving spouse can become angry; feel alone, depressed, anxious, and disengaged. Just as retirement, the loved one needs to find a hobby or interest, and needs to remember that socializing is important. When your loved one retired they probably lost connections with some or most of their work peers. This is because their interests have changed, the working individuals discuss work issues and your loved one has found new interests or hobbies they have not thought about while they were involved in their career. However, if they were involved in activities through their Church or club they may have gained new friendships. This is also important because these new friends can help them with adjustment from working to retirement; they now have someone they can relate to. Family is important and must remember that just because your loved one is slower in doing activities, may not be able to walk as fast, respond as fast, and for some may not do as many of the same activities they used to, they still need you. They need to know you are there, that you care, that you are there to help them with the loss of their loved one. Their roles have changed, instead of taking care of someone else, they now have to take care of themselves and learn to adapt to life as a widow or widower. Here at the nursing home we are here to help you and your loved one through all of that. We are here to help ease the worry of whether your loved one has activities, transportation to and from doctor appointments, and if they are offered the option of doing things on their own. With all of the concerns of mental health and physical health that elderly individuals face, we understand the need to ensure your loved one is well taken care of. When your loved one is unable to live in their homes independently due to safety concerns, making this decision can be difficult, but it is the right one. Nursing homes can seem like a scary place to have your loved one move to because of the negativity nursing homes can receive. We have never had an issue arise regarding abuse or neglect. I do want to make you aware of the types of abuse an elderly person can experience. Those are, according to Dyer and Rowe (1999), “Physical abuse (the non-accidental infliction of physical force that can result in bodily injury, pain or impairment), Psychological abuse (Threats, humiliation, bullying, swearing, and other verbal conduct), Financial abuse (unauthorized and improper use of the elders funds or property), Sexual abuse (Direct or indirect involvement in sexual activity without the elders consent), and Neglect (failure to fulfill the needs of the elderly)” (164.).

...Young and Middle Adulthood Case Study Holly Regan BSHS/325 February 2, 2015 Mary Carlisle Young and Middle Adulthood Case Study Jackson is a 25-year-old single male still living at home, unemployed and attending rehab. He grew up in a single-parent home with his mother who is a high school teacher. Several events that have taken place in Jackson's life has left him feeling hopeless and confused such as failing to graduate college and his biological father’s absence growing up. The two intimate relationships he had while in high school he withdrew from after asking them both to marry him resulted in him questioning his sexual identity once entering college. Since his car accident, he has been abusing alcohol and prescription painkillers prescribed to him when he suffered cognitive and analytical skill damage. Since Jackson dropped out of college, he has not sought any employment and sits in his room alone most of the day. Jackson’s experiences in his life and relationships indicate lack of trust that contributes to his emotional instability and low self-esteem. “Depression often emerges early in the life course and is consistently shown to be associated with poor self-esteem,” (Gayman, 2011). Jackson grew up in a single parent home with his mother and had no involvement with his biological father. The absence of his father also contributes to his lack of trust in building social and intimate relationships. Liken to this is his shortage of interest in creating...

Individuals will usually experience young and middle adulthood between the age range of 23 to 45, but may last up until the age of 50. During this time individuals will begin to establish an independent identity to separate themselves from others. Individuals will also start to attain certain life goals such as a family and dream job. Everyone is different and may experience young and middle adulthood at very different ages. This can be caused by an individual's psychological and environmental factors. Tina's study case is an example of that. Tina is a 45 year old single mother of three adult children. She is divorced, but is in a relationship with a man that is the same age as she is. She is currently having problems with her adult son that has had run ins with the law and is currently participating in a rehab program. ...Young and Middle Adulthood Case Study BSHS/ 325 4/27/2014 Aaron Mills, MSW Among the challenges facing single mothers, a particularly difficult one is how to help children develop “male-positive” attitudes in situations when the parents have broken up and children have no active relationship with the father (Doherty & Craft 2011). This is to give detailed information about the discoveries made on the Jacksons progress so far. It covers information about his close and personal relationship with his mother. It also shows where there has been a change of character that has taken place in the recent past. The other things that this case study clearly shows are both positive and negative consequences resulting from Jackson’s current behavior. Tina, Jackson’s mother, and her boyfriend Michael are the only family members featured in the case study. Michael attempts to help the young man overcome his problems but his attempts have hit a wall. Jackson’s previous girlfriend said that he had problems being loyal to them. They also said that he had poignant problems. It appears as though Jackson does not have acquaintances and that leaves Tina and Michael as his only support system. Jackson began to chang after getting involved in a car accident. His loss of the ability to solve issues and process his thoughts changed his life. The current Jackson is unable to answer queries about his sexuality. Periods of exploration during general identity...

...and women. The majority of the people assume that once a person gets into a certain age, sex is not an important part of a person life that is if sex is part of that person’s life. When in reality that assumption about sex is not true. The elderly people may not be as wild as young adults when it comes to sexual practice, but they still have the desire to have sex, even though they are into their late eighties. Sex is one of the meaningful aspects of any relationship and this does not eliminate itself from the relationships of elderly people. However, both men and women do suffer some changes in their sexuality as they become older. As for the men one of the main worry’s as they become older is their capacity of reach an erection. In some men, it may take longer and contain more motivation to accomplishing an erection, and even then it may not be as strong as it was in their young years. According to Cherry "Some men are unable to achieve erection at all. This is referred to as impotence. Impotence doesn't only affect elderly men; younger men will also likely suffer this at least once in their lives” (Cherry). The women also go through some of the changes in witch is menopause during the middle adulthood. The menopause is one of the common cause for sexual changes in women as they get older. Cherry states that "following menopause, a woman's vaginal canal may be shortened and thinned and sometimes even becomes smaller all around. Many women also experience a decrease in lubrication"...

Case Study of Human Development

...Case Study of Human Development Development throughout life differs from individual to individual. Each person has their own agenda for cultural identity, growth, health, socioeconomic status, education, gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, and all inspire each person’s life story. Adulthood is frequently observed as when an individual is considered officially and developmentally prepared to hold responsibilities such as driving, voting, getting married, and entering the military. The course of becoming mature does not finish with adolescence but remains throughout adulthood as psychological, security and self-actualization requirements are met (Ehow, 1999-2011). Adulthood is separated into three categories, which are young adulthood, middle age and old age. In Erik Erikson's stages of human development, a young adult is an individual between the ages of 19 and 39. The early adulthood period in human development leads the middle adulthood phase. An individual in the middle adulthood stage is between 40 and 60 years old. An individual in their 60’s is considered late adulthood. During early adulthood the young adult phase includes the personal necessity for sex and intimacy. Isolation happens when an individual fails to achieve intimacy. The young adult finds out that love and compassion may help them to obtain what they desire. And when we don't find it easy to create satisfying relationships, our world can begin to shrink as, in defense, we can feel...

Early and Middle Adulthood

...Early and Middle Adulthood Marianne Williamson said, “In our society, as people pass out of young adulthood, they tend to relate to themselves more in terms of what they are no longer than what they are now, and that’s psychologically low-grade devastating”. As we age, we tend to look at the future, that growth with fear or trepidation. We mourn the loss of our “youth” rather than embrace the new changes we are heading toward. These changes we will experience are vast and necessary for each stage of development. As we grow become adults we will experience a variety of psychological changes as we adjust to aging and any changes that will happen to our lifestyle. These changes should not be feared, they simply mark the growth and experience that we will go through. During early and middle adulthood these changes are the most apparent. These changes can affect our relationships, the roles we play, and our later life. The way that people adjust to the changes of growing older and how this affects the rest of their life is what we will examine here. Social and Intimate Relationships During early and middle adulthood the way people view and interact within their relationships will be affected by a variety of factors. During middle to late adulthood, people will enter the fifth stage of Erik Erikson’s Psychosocial Theory of Development. During this stage people will face a crisis where they will face being alone or being involved in meaningful relationships, called intimacy versus...

Lifespan Development

...Development and Personality Middle adulthood has been seen as a variety of different ages depending on the source you choose to believe. Oxford English Dictionary defines “middle-age” as the period of life between young adulthood and old age, now usually regarded as between about 45 and 60 years of age. The U.S. Census describes middle age as including the age categories of 35-44 and 45-54, and the Collins Dictionary considers it approximately between the ages of 41-60. No matter how it is viewed middle adulthood or middle age is arguably the most defining time of a person’s life. I will explain the factors that affect physical and cognitive development in most people as they reach these stages in life. First, let’s explore the physical affects. As we begin to get older it is almost inevitable to notice the physical changes that our bodies take as we age. Although some may age quicker or slower than others depend on the environment you live in and/or your genetic background. Slower metabolism, lose of organ functions such as eyesight and hearing loss and even gender specific ailments such as erectile dysfunction in men and menopause in women. These changes have no bias regarding race, ethnic background or social-economic class, as we get older our bodies start to change. Although many of these changes are biological in nature, there are certain that we do that can decrease or speed up these changes and some are passed down by generations. Studies show that 4 out of 7 men will...

The aim of this research was to examine how technological competence was attained during the test participants' lives. This follow-up study was carried out as a qualitative case study. Data from interviews with three participants were tape-recorded and translated. The research data were then analyzed using content analysis. The analysis was carried out by assessing which of the essential elements in the participants technological competence contributed to success in their lives. These findings were later classified in terms of themes or factors and, finally, reported in the conclusions. The results from each participant interview are shown in a competence curve, which are explained in more detail. The competence curves indicate each person's development in technological competence during their life. There are several milestones connected to physical developments in early as well as middle childhood. Physical developmental change might take place as an outcome of genetically-controlled courses known as maturation, or even as a product of varied environmental factors and learning.
