CHAPTER ONE

I stare up as the woman in crimson red walk towards the podium. She extends her microphone and makes short pause before opening her mouth. Everyone stops talking and stare up like I do.

“Freshmen, transferees, welcome!” she says it with a wink of excitement, waves her right hand as to show formal welcome to us. “First of all I’d like to thank each and every one for choosing this school. It’s an honour for us to be your guidance as you study and discover more of your precious talents. We assure you our available facilities will help you practice your skills. As for your researches, internet is available inside the campus but still we encourage you to read books at our grand library.” I heard someone woohoo-ed.

Orientations, I really hate attending one. They all talk and talk about their state-of-the-art facilities; a bunch of show-offs flashing their fake smiles. An honour to be their guidance? Not. We all know that most schools especially the ones that are owned by companies, including this one *coughs*, only want our money. They don’t care about how difficult exams are. They don’t care about how some professors are evil to the core. It’s just plain business. Believe me. After all, this is not my first school.

“Again, thank you and welcome to International School of Arts. Feel free to visit our different school organizations to their booths.” she claps her hands and then points us to a huge door. I didn’t hear telling her name because I was too busy playing flappy bird at my phone, stupid bird. Sometimes I question myself if this flappy bird is a cartoon bird or a fly. Seriously, it looks like a fly with lips like Angelina Jolie’s. By looking at her short silver wavy hair and I assume she’s at her sixties, I bet she’s the president of this school. Everyone claps after the president’s welcome speech except me. I can’t clap. I’m still playing flappy bird. YES! Keeping my phone after beating my last score, I head towards the school field wherein colourful booths are placed.

Okay…let’s see. I check out the first booth that I see. It says “United Readers Org.”. It’s kind of lame because I’m not a fan of books. I only read books when it has illustrations. “Hi! What’s your name?” a blonde heading towards me wearing a white t-shirt with a logo of an open book. It has three letters, U.R.O, indicating that she’s a book club member. “Jeff…I’m Jeff.” I show her my new i.d.

“Hello Jeff! I see your course is Fine Arts…major in Painting.” she stares at my i.d then gives back a sweet smile. “My name’s Abby, by the way. So…are you a bookworm? The grand library here is H-U-G-E!” “Nope. Sorry. I only read books with illustrations in it.” Sorry. “Oh, okay. Well…if you have friends who’re certified bookworms, let me know.” Though she’s quite disappointed to my answer, she hands a small card with her name and number on it. She’s their club president. “Keep it.” “Okay. Thanks, Abby.” “Tell your friends! Spread the word!” she gives me a wink then waves a goodbye. I wave back. Yeah right.

After visiting few booths which all look like stalls from science fair, I notice this one booth with big musical notes attached around it. SONIX – with the X, as told by futuristic signboard complete with not-so-much-of-an-eyesore neon lights. That’s the name of this organization. They look cool…decent. In order for them to attract some newbies, three of their members sing “Applause” by Lady GaGa while their dancers perform gracefully, but awkward, to the same song. I don’t get their moves but the vocals…perfect. Although they do it in slow acapella it didn’t lose the desire to dance.

Our organization is open for those people who want to learn more about music and dance. Want to join? From my back I heard a soft voice explaining some details about their org. “Oh really? I actually love music and I also know how to play some instruments like guitar, bass and drums.” She smirks, “Is that so? Well I think I just found a new member. What’s your name?” I show her my newly laminated I.D. “Jeff Rovera…are you related to Paul Fernandez?” she asks while writing my name on a piece of paper, which I assume is a list of newbies for their org. “Uh…no, I’m not, sorry.” I chuckle. “Oh, okay.” she responds like she doesn’t give a damn about my answer. It went kind of awkward for a second but suddenly her mood changed, “I almost forgot! I’m Pat, SONIX’s president.” I really don’t know what to say to her. I just give her my sweet fake smile. God I want this to be over, I can’t stand the awkwardness.

June 11, 2013. It was the time when the International School of Arts’ president called my mother to report that my eldest brother, Paul Fernandez, was found hanging at his dorm’s ceiling. According to the report, his roommate found his cold hanged body around 3:15 A.M. His roommate wasn’t there because he went to a frat party and got drunk. The police said it was an obvious case of suicide. They also found a suicide note which my father kept in Paul’s room after the funeral.

Do you want to know why I’m really here at this boring school? I didn’t transfer because I want to study. I’m here because I need to know the truth about my brother’s death. We assumed that the reason behind my brother’s suicide is his ex-girlfriend. I hope you’re happy now that I set you free – that was his last words as stated in his letter. I know my brother really well. He’s smart, caring, and responsible and loves almost everyone around him. I’m not really sure what cause them to break-up. Did Harvie cheated on him? I really don’t know. As I enter this school I hope my questions will have its answers.

-------------------------------------------------
CHAPTER TWO

Well, look at the time! It’s okay. Pat gave me her card after we talked. Whew! It’s really tiring roaming around this school and we all know it’s not easy. International School of Arts is the second largest university here in the Philippines that's why if you're going to walk just to explore the whole school you might end up like a rotten vegetable by the time you arrive to your dorm. By the way, I didn’t almost find my dorm. I assume I only have one roommate. This blue backpack is the only thing that I have with me because my parents will bring the rest of my stuff the next morning. Now all I need to do is to find my stupid room because I'm really, really that tired and I have to fix my stuff when I get there. I did choose this room for myself because this was Paul's room. I got lucky because nobody got interested to get my brother's space. All I know is that no student ever claims his spot for the reason that it might have a curse. They also told everyone that my brother's spirit might appear. Screw them. At last, I found this stupid room! Of course i knock first although I have my own key thanks to our dorm administrator. I don’t want to open the door because I might saw something that i might regret later on. I knocked three times, the usual knocking, and unfortunately answering. He must be already sleeping. I try to open the door and surprisingly it's not locked. Does this carelessness happen all the time? I just continue to open the door. As usual the room is dark and also, it's not that big. This room doesn’t have that much stuff; two single bed, a refrigerator, two study tables, and a kitchen. It's not so bad; the only missing here is a bathroom. This is quite nice for a two-person room. I hope he's not picky or worst...a kleptomaniac. WHAT TIME IS IT? It's already midnight and still my stupid roommate is not here. Why am I waiting for him? Are you really that excited to see your new roommate? I don't want to sleep without seeing my new roommate, I don't trust him. What if he's the one who killed my brother? I just don't know...yet. But once I gain his trust for sure I will squeeze all information in him...slowly, because I know for sure he's knows a lot about Paul. Damn it! Why is he so late? I'm hearing footsteps, maybe that's him. But why walk so slow...then fast...then slow? I think it’s him. I hope that’s him. Pushing his head on the door, "WOOOOO!!! Best night ever! Two chicks in a row!" Yeah, he's definitely drunk. I'm starting to hate him already. Is this really my roommate? This might not be his room. Damn, why didn't I lock that freaking door? “Paul?” looking at me while his eyes squint. Oh no! “W-What? Uh…no. Sorry I’m not Paul. Who’s Paul?” I stand up to open the lights. Do I really look like my brother? If I bust this cover I’m screwed. Game over Jeff, you’ll never know if it was really a suicide or not. “Oh dude, I’m sorry. It thought you’re Paul. He was my last roommate. Oh damn…” He steps back a bit. I lean my head to the side, “What?” “I almost forgot he died last year. Sorry dude. It’s just that you really do look like him.” “You think so?” “Yeah, I thought you were his ghost. So…you’re my new roommate? I’m Salvador, but they call me Blazo because of my surname.” He raises his hand, expecting to shake hands. I reach his hand to accept his, “Jeff Rovera. Tell me about Paul. What happened to him? Why did he die?” He told me the story…that horrible story. My hands were shaking while he tells it. He said he knows everything about my brother that’s why he doesn’t get why Paul committed suicide though the rumors about Harvie and him broke up were true. And so my investigation begins. I found out that Salvador…I mean Blazo, is plain innocent. He’s actually my brother’s best friend. Harvie, Paul’s ex-girlfriend, did cheat on him. Paul saw Harvie and a guy from URO kissing at the back of the music building that’s why they broke up. I joined the SONIX org by the way. Young Blood – that’s how they call their fresh members. I found out that he’s the former lead vocalist of their club together with Salvador. It was so hard to talk to Pat at first. She’s not that open to others about herself. I’m starting to get suspicious at Pat after all she’s the president and I also knew that she’s the school president’s only daughter. Life here in ISA is not that easy. It’s difficult to cover my true identity. As the time goes by I’ve become a bit paranoid. Every night I hear the door creaking but when I try to take a look, the door’s locked. There was this time while I was cooking, someone whispered “Hey Jay…” – that’s my nickname and only Paul knows that. People stare like I did something. They’re just quiet but it’s so disturbing how they look at me. Even Blazo suddenly became so quiet. This is getting in to my skin. This is really disturbing. Am I blowing this up? I still don’t know who killed my brother. Pat is suspicious but I’m not sure if she’s the killer. I’m running out of time. I sometimes think Paul’s trying to call me.
-------------------------------------------------
CHAPTER THREE

I noticed that I was alone in the dormitory. “Where are the others? Salvador, where the hell are you? Show yourself!” I looked around and looked for other people, but there’s no one around. I was alone in the dark.

Slowly, sweat starts to drip. My body slowly shivers and I feel so scared. I slowly walk through the dark hallway, until suddenly I heard this loud sound.

KABOOM!

Damn, I got blind; I shouted like crazy and run fast. I’m not myself right now. I hear and see these images of me killing Paul. I cry and my body suddenly fell down. I forcefully hold my head and bump it on the wall.
“Stop it! Please Stop!” I shouted while holding my head.
But still, I can see these bad images of me killing him. I cry and sulk at the corner.
This is bad. Suddenly I see this light from the end of the hallway. I saw Paul, my loving brother. “Paul?” I step back a bit. I remembered the time when I was happy with my brother Paul. The happy things we did, the games we’ve played and the happy times we had together. I apologized to Paul. “I’m Sorry. Sorry.” The light slowly disappears. I slowly stand up, walk at the other end of the hallway. I climb the stairs and open the door to the top floor of the dormitory. I position at the top of the dormitory. I only see darkness until again I see an image of Paul walking away from me going into the light. Because of this, I follow my brother, my loving Paul… slowly stepping my foot… and just fall down. Sorry Paul.

...| Marijuana should be legalized | | Chioke s. Woodley | | 03/512 | Marijuana a preparation made from the dried flower clusters and leaves of the cannabis plant, usually smoked or eaten to induce euphoria. A strong-smelling plant from whose dried leaves a number of euphoria and hallucinogenic drugs are prepared. The most commonly used illicit drug; considered a soft drug, it consists of the dried leaves of the hemp plant; smoked or chewed for euphoric effect. Unfortunately, however, the financial costs of marijuana legalization would never outweigh its benefits. People may not realize it, but the United States spends billions of tax payers dollars fighting the so called “drug war” when there are so many more important issues at hand. I mean, let the people who want to smoke marijuana smoke marijuana peacefully, how is it bothering you? If the fact that you are not earning any tax dollars off illegal sales is bothersome, then just legalize it and tax it. Since 0.5 grams of marijuana is sold on the streets for about $8.60 and its production price is only $1.70 – that means that the legal selling price could be much lower than the street selling price, giving people incentive to purchase legally. A research company estimates that the industry is worth roughly $10 billion a year. Increase in marijuana prevalence resulting from legalization would probably increase the already high costs of marijuana use in society. Accidents would increase, health-care costs would...

Caring for Children and Young People

...Safe guarding children and young people. Safeguarding children and young people is a very important job role. The health and social care sector is seen most for the protection and safeguarding of children and young people, especially the social care side, for example a social workers job role is to protect and support children and young people and removing them from situations that may cause them to be in or at risk of being in any sort of danger. Each action taken to succeed in safeguarding children and young people will be connected to a legislation or framework for children and young people. There are seven main legislations and frameworks that I will be explaining and they are as follows; United Nations Convention on the rights of the child (1989), the children act (1998, updated in 2004), every child matters (2003), the data protection act (1998), framework for the assessment of children in need and their parents (2000), common framework (England) and the human rights act (1998). The United Nations convention on the rights of the child (1989) legislation set out the lowest acceptable standard on the treatment of every child. There are three main concepts of the United Nations convention on the rights of the child (1989). The first concept states that the best way for a child to be raised is by their parents. The second concept says that it is unacceptable for a child to be abused or neglected and the third concept says that the authorities must involve themselves to...

Police sources say that the bullets aimed to the 1-year-old boy was meant for his father, Anthony Hennis, and accidently hits the stroller and killed his son. Family members mentioned that Anthony, the little boy’s father has a record of more than 20 arrests and that they believe the shooting was payback from earlier when the father had a dispute with someone. Unfortunately, the gun man had bad aiming and killed the little boy. Bishop Willie Billips, a local anti-violence activist was with the parents when they had to identify the child. Community activist felt very strong about a 1-year-old boy life being taken away at such an innocent young age. They are praying some can turn this killer in to the police. Delinquency

...Theories CJS/240 Sunday Septemeber11th, 2011 Individual Theories There are so many reason why young people commit crimes in today’s society whereas others strive to excel. Many of these reasons tend to vary depending on the home that the youth grew up in or around, or even how smart or challenged the youth is, however; all of these factors are caused by different settings , and consequences or punishments need to be put into place to keep the youth from becoming a criminal. Just because a youth has grown up in poor situations or circumstances there is no reason for the youth to become a criminal because of their history. There are so many theories that are put into place to fit each reason or excuse that a young person gives as to why a crime or criminal act is attempted or committed. According to the routine activities theory a young person will commit a crime if they know that the opportunity is there. A teen might be aware that there is a home that is easy to get into because there are not police officers around, and it would be a way for them to obtain some cash since they are broke and need to come up with money quick. The idea of this theory is that since a teenager realizes that his or her needs fit the opportunity that has become available to them that they will commit the crime. I seriously believe that this theory has completely forgot that just because a young person does not have a lot of supervision, and could have some poor initial morals, that they see the...

Muscle Binds

...other pleasures except sport and it occasions more health and social problems than it seems. Being an expensive short-lasting fashion, exercises make people forget about everything except their beauty, even their own death does not matter anymore. They train the bodies but neglect the minds. According to the author it’s better to be a couch potato but not a self-righteous young person with rippling muscles. The title of the article reflects the contents of the article in full measure: one is bound to train not to have cellulite, one is bound to train to follow the fashion, one is bound to train to come to term with oneself, and finally, one is bound to train to be healthy. As the article is written in ironic way it is quite easy to read but the real sense is caught only by the end. It makes the reader understand that he/she is either a silly “hunk” or a lazy “potato”. The passage is written in a very chatty informal publicistic style to draw reader’s attention, to persuade them to get the author’s point of view and to entertain them. It is chosen for the target audience who consists of young people. The title ‘Muscle binds’ contains an oxymoron as the word ‘muscle’ has a positive connotation and is associated with health and the word ‘binds’ is negatively connotated, its meaning is ‘tightened’. At the very beginning the readers swallow the bait that makes it easier to convince them of the truth of the author’s words. The vocabulary is emotionally coloured (‘oldsters’...

Cultural Observation

...thought was that watching young people surely could not generate an entire four-page report. You see, I have never taken an interest in watching people that I did not have any direct contact with. I took the escalator down to the first level and I ordered some Chinese food and a diet coke. I found an empty table and proceeded to let the observation begin. Much to my surprise, I began to pay close attention to a group of very young white kids at a table about three rows up from where I was sitting. The first thing I noticed about them is that they each had body piercings and tattoos covered most of their arms. I wondered how they would feel about the dramatic body art they were advertising in about twenty years from now. Next, I saw two young white boys sporting blonde spiked Mohawk hairstyles standing around just outside a video game store. They appeared to be staring very intently at something on the back of one of the games that they each had purchased. This only lasted as long as it took for them to notice three young black girls, who could not have been more then thirteen or fourteen at the most, as they walked by. These girls wore the most revealing and tight little shorts I think I have ever seen on anyone before. When the girls saw that the boys were looking at them, surprisingly, they seemed to get offended. I wondered why since they were showing off everything that should be left to the imagination. Lastly I noticed a smaller group of young girls, maybe thirteen, they...

The Speech for Riots

...A) Manuscript Ladies and gentlemen… 2 days ago we all sat in our living room and watch TV. We all saw the news, where the focus was all the riots, about how they were destroying the shops, we all wonder, why? In my opinion it is unemployment – the youth are bored and disillusioned. Cause the percent for unemployed in UK is going down, and for that the young people without job are now saying stop, they want more jobs, and so they can earn money to live for and to provide their family. The prime minister says that there is something wrong with our society in UK. But how do we know that the young people not only are doing this for the free stuff and money, but for the chance to prove their government wrong about their statement. It is the young unemployed people that started the riots. If we ask our society what cause the problem we will answer: The kill of Marc Duggan, who is a young man who was shoot by the police without any reason of his death, this touch a lot of the people in UK. It started with this peaceful protest, but it took over. The people who were on the streets had nothing to do with the killing of Mark Duggan. It is the people that not have money to provide for themselves and their families, to take an education and after getting a good job, that are among the riots. The schools in UK are costing too much, and that’s results that many youth not going. This is of cause an important factor, but it is not the only reason, it is a combination...

Young Problems

...Young problems. When you leave school you understand that the time of your independence life and the beginning of a far more serious examination of your abilities and character has come. You also understand that from now you’ll have to do everything yourself, and to “fight” with everybody around you for better life. The first problem that young people meet is to choose their future profession, it means that they have to choose the future of their life. It’s not an easy task to make the right choice of a job. You know children have a lot of dreams about their future : to become a superman or a policeman or a doctor … It’s very easy they think, but when they become older and see real world they understand that in all professions need to know perfectly about what you do, you must be well-educated and well-informed. That’s why I think it’s very important to have a good education at school. And if you work hard everything will be OK. Another problem of young people is drugs. This is a relatively new problem but it is becoming more and more dangerous. Million young people today are using drugs, and most of them will die. Usually they want just to try it , then again and again … and after year may be two years they will die . It is true. Because there are no medicine to help you. That’s why never do it, if you do - it goes bad, very bad. I think that police must work hard to protect young people from drugs. Because drugs will kill our young generation and our future will...

China and India’s Youth Demographics and Trends

...As the United States continue to grow over the years, it is certain that we should also acknowledge that other countries will be expanding also. We tend to focus how each country is growing in technology but there are many other trends that we are forgetting. Youths in China and India tend to follow their own trends. We will discuss China and India by describing the products (goods and services) that interest their youth markets, comparing and contrasting the micro- and macro-environmental forces that can influence the marketing strategies for these products, and analyzing the marketing strategies of these two countries and compare them with Western-based consumption marketers. It has been projected that in the near future the youth in China is going to be the main part of consumer spending in that country alone. The current population of the People’s Republic of China is estimated to be about 1,390,510,630. China’s population makes up around 19.3% of the world’s population (World Population Statistics, 2014). According to The Hindu (2014), the population in the age-group of 15-34 increased from 353 million in 2001 to 430 million in 2011. Every third person in an Indian city today is a youth (Shivakumar, 2014). The most significant component to successful marketing is to gain the loyalty of the youth. Today’s consumers relate to brands that help define who they are and who they will like to be in the future. The youth in China are now deciding what they want for their own lives...

Analysis of Article "The Go-Nowhere Generation"

...is educated older adults and parents, who are most likely to share the authors’ views. The authors implement a series of comparisons, which include statistics and descriptions, between the past and present generation of young adults to illustrate their position. However, though the authors make several valid points that are supported by solid evidence, the article falls short of being truly convincing due to its narrow views and assumptions.
