Only Drunks and Children Tell the Truth By: HassanK.
It is said that whatever one has done in the past affects and alters the present. This is a prominent theme in the book Only Drunks and Children Tell the Truth and is systematically shown. For instance, Janice seeks forgiveness for the ill feelings she has created and, tired of being angry at the past, she ends the play on a note of hopeful reconciliation. Readers get a clear understanding of the theme, and how it contributes to the meaning of the play. In this play, we observe that the past influences what happens in the present by affecting one’s life, the lives of others, and by creating conflicts between people.
Whatever happens in the past affects you as an individual, and this is clearly shown with Janice/Grace. Janice is an educated young lady, with a great career ahead of her as a lawyer. She lives in a high-rise condo in downtown Toronto, and leads a financially stable and healthy life. However when Janice went back to visit Otter Lake on Christmas, everything changed. She completely broke down in emotion and couldn’t handle all the overwhelming information that she received “.. That’s why I left last time. It was too much too soon. I was crumbled. Thirty five years stuffed into an hour” (Pg. 78). As a result of this, Janice’s out-going personality completely vaporized. She became depressed, sad, and had conflicting feelings about her true identity. These feelings led her to not being able to work and then later on having her go to therapy to seek help “… However, finding herself under severe emotional distress due to her visit, my client is unable to resume work. She decides to take two months off, to deal with the bouncing around in her head” (Pg. 97). These past events developed a stronger Janice. Because of all the events Janice experienced, she gained courage and strength to go back and visit her mother’s grave, and she showed signs of maturity. Janice’s past truly changed her as a person and altered her present in a positive way.
Not only does the past affect your life, it can also affect the lives of those around you, which is exhibited with Barb. When Janice left the reserve and never came back, Barb had to take care of her mother and act as the responsible individual by doing chores like cooking and cleaning. As soon as Janice left, a whole load was dropped on Barbs shoulders. This caused Barb to become angry, sad, and depressed “Moms room, I can’t go in there. Even after four days it still makes me feel too weird…” (Pg. 76). We can see that Barb still cannot get over her mother’s death and is unable to enter. In addition to this, Janice’s actions caused Barb to become lonely. Now that her mother has passed away, Janice is the only family member Barb has and the only family Barb can rely on “My brothers dead, my mother, and my father. I’m an orphan. I don’t want to be alone… you’re all I’ve got left Grace” (Pg. 101).
In addition to affecting your own life and the lives of others, the past can create conflicts between individuals. A conflict that is repeatedly exhibited in this play is between Janice and Barb. Both ladies are constantly arguing about who is right or wrong and who is to blame. Barb is continuously criticizing Janice for not being culturally connected with the native community while also blaming her for their mother’s death “No, it’s not is it? I loved mom, she loved you, and you killed her” (Pg. 100). These exchanges of harsh words led to some physical action when Janice punched Barb in the face. In addition to that, there was an immense amount tension between both ladies in the beginning of the play. This was shown when Barb showed no interest to interact with Janice and regularly stated that she did not want to stay in her home “I don’t want to stay here!” (Pg. 25). The conflict between the two sisters was shown throughout the whole play, and clearly showcased how ones actions and past created conflict.
In conclusion, the play Only Drunks and Children Tell the Truth demonstrates how the past can alter and modify the present. These modifications can either be for the better or for the worse. In this play, we see the re-connection of Janice and Barb. The reader can assume that both will get along in the future as the ending of the play was written beautifully and elegantly. The play shows the changes in both characters as a result of their past and shows how they grow to become more mature.
“ If we are willing to explore the origins of our feelings, and are able to express those feelings, then we are in fact being given over and over again the opportunity to heal them, and to free ourselves from the pain of the past.” – Graham Cook

...acted in his self-interest. The psychological egoist might reply that the soldier is lying or self-deceived. Perhaps he threw himself on the grenade because he could not bear to live with himself afterwards if he did not do so. He has a better life, in terms of welfare, by avoiding years of guilt. The main problem here is that while this is a possible account of some cases, there is no reason to think it covers all cases. Another problem is that guilt may presuppose that the soldier has a non-self-regarding desire for doing what he takes to be right. Egoist are very greedy and try to get things anyway they can, even if it's inconvenient for others. The questions and comments of an Egoist: What's in it for me? How will it benefit me? Yuck! Recycled Water In Australia

...water. The water is then disinfected with chlorine and ultraviolet light and then is safe and ready for human consumption. Recycling waste water is the best option Brisbane. Advantages to drinking recycled waste water is that the cost is very low compared to treating potable water. Recycled water is pumped directly back into use, meaning that it saves water that otherwise might be lost in contamination or runoff. Recycled water is put through a less thorough process than potable water this means that recycled water contains more chemicals such as nitrogen which is used to fertilize crops. Public perception is an important factor in decision to use recycled water. Many citizens are worried that the water is dirty and gross, this is called the yuck factor. By the time the water has past the several stages it is cleaner and has less taste than regular potable water. Many people also believe that there are harmful pathogens and toxins in the water, although it is possible there is almost a 100% chance that there is not also ingesting multiple pathogens may be harmful but ingesting only a few isn’t...

My Paper

...Imagine being in a class that has 10-15 kids in a classroom. Great, right? Always having the teacher when someone needs him or her, and being able to pay attention easier and the class is never too loud. Now imagine being in a class with 40-60 people in it. It’s always loud and hard to pay attention. Now think, do class sizes really matter? Do smaller classes really work better and achieve more? Are they more efficient? Class sizes are becoming more of a problem but what are we going to do? Limiting class sizes is one way to solve this problem but it’s not he only way. For example in “Classes Are Growing”, the author states “Researches compared the achievements of pupils in kindergarten through grade 3 who were randomly assigned to small classes, of 13 to 17 children, or to regular classes, of 22 to 25 with either a teacher or a teacher with a full time aid.” After preforming this analysis in Tennessee the results conclude that by lowering the class size their performance level was increased by a tenth of a standard, but when this research was repeated in California and Wisconsin didn’t have the same conclusion. The author of “Everyone knows students learn more in smaller classes, or do they” has the palpable reason why this happened. The author explains how there are to many variables to know if the size of the class really matters. “Well, what other reasons are there?” Cutting back on class sizes can lead to budget problems. Splitting 60 kids into 5 classrooms is causing more...

Squash

...How to make the Best Squash Ever I used to be a vegetarian and all I ate were salads and vegetables. I was always trying to come up with different ways to change and improve the taste of vegetables I knew were good for me but had a hard time stomaching them in their raw or baked form. I also had to get creative after my son was born because I wanted him to enjoy eating his vegetables. Most households it is a fight to get the kids to eat anything that is good for them especially their vegetables, and I didn’t want that struggle. One of our favorite vegetables to eat is squash. I know you might be thinking “Yuck”, but don’t knock it till you’ve tried it! My son, my husband and all of our friends love this easy recipe. I cannot tell you how many times I have been asked “How do you make your squash?” In order to make the Best Squash Ever, you will need: squash, the smaller the better for the taste and in any quantity. Muenster cheese, I have tried many other cheeses but Muenster seems to be the best. Seasonings: garlic powder, season salt, Italian seasonings and oregano. First, you need to cut the squash into halves, cutting horizontally down the middle. While preparing the squash be sure that your oven is preheating to 450 degrees. It usually takes about an hour to cook the squash on 350 degrees but if you off about 20 minutes. Second, place the squash laying face up on a cookie sheet. No need to spread them out, just side by side is fine. Third, you want to add the seasonings...

Pink Slime

...Pink Slime Principals of Marketing 15SA_MAR1011 Citations (Oswask, 2012) (Armstrong, 2014) The meat industry saw media sensationalism as a campaign of misinformation to undermine a product used for more than ten years to supplement lean beef supplies used in ground beef. The depiction of LFTB in the media as “pink slime” raised the product’s “yuck” factor and implied that there were food safety issues with LFTB, mainly because ammonium gas is used as an antimicrobial intervention in the production of LFTB. Also, the fact that ground beef purchased for the school lunch program could contain LFTB triggered consumer calls for the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) to immediately end the practice. Ground beef is the most popularly consumed beef item among American consumers, and consumers have increasingly demanded lean ground beef. USDA approved the process that Beef Products, Inc. (BPI), the primary producer of LFTB, uses to produce LFTB, and USDA continues to affirm that LFTB is a safe, nutritious beef product. Although LFTB received negative press in previous years, the uproar starting in March 2012 has had greater impacts. USDA changed its policy on school lunches to allow schools to have a choice of whether to buy ground beef with LFTB or not. Major grocery chains announced that they were discontinuing the use of LFTB in retail ground beef. The result has been an immediate, sharp decline in 50% beef trimming prices, and expectations...

Young Adult Trope

...annoyed with the writing. It felt choppy, not at all put together, and far too erratic. There was no clarity. I don't know if that was done on purpose to convey how Zoe felt around Digby, but it was still a huge issue. It wasn't just small inconsistencies in conversation or within Zoe's inner monologue, characters would start something and then instantly switch to something else. It was like they all had unintentional ADD. My second problem, was something that infuriated me beyond words and I couldn’t figure out how to say nicely. Look at the two quotes below, what does that make you feel? "Who knew a sixteen-year-old boy who wasn't a werewolf fighting sparkly vampires could have a six pack of abs?" - 144 "Well, it's really Isabel but yuck, right? Ever since that movie-that-must-not-be-named, Isabel, Isabella, Bella... no, just no," - 157 My biggest issue, as I have pointed out above, was the fact that this book felt it necessary to make fun of others - specifically Twilight. We get it, the movies were bad compared to the books, but making fun of it is so overdone now.  Frankly, it distracted me from the rest of the book. Sure I have seen it done before, Vampire Academy made fun of Twilight in the movie and Vampire Diaries did as well during its first season on television - but this book had nothing to do with vampires, just regular teenagers. And I know, freedom of speech and all that jazz, but bashing another author's work - even just the movies based off of their work -...

Innate Learned Behavior

...life will have certain learned behaviours as a result of these circumstances. The baby may not cry as much as she should, as she will have learnt that crying often doesn’t yield results and so will conserve that energy instead. If that baby were to be removed from the situation and placed in a loving, nurturingenvironment her behaviours would (slowly and cautiously) begin to change. She would sub-consciously or consciously realise that the external factors of life had changed and therefore learn that crying out for her caregiver will result in a response and her needs will be met. Empiricists’ argument grows even stronger as babies grow up and develop into children with obvious preferences and opinions. A child whose mother has always said ‘yuck, fish’ whenever anyone around her eats fish, will almost certainly feel the same way and not eat fish. This pattern of behaviour is clearly...
