Zinc (Zn) with an atomic number 30 is a chemical element with bluish white colour having lustrous and diamagnetic properties [1]. It has hexagonal crystal structure found in five stable isotopes and is the 24th most abundant element on earth’s crust. The usage of the zinc has a long history and used prominently in ancient world [2-5].
Zinc has an enormous significance; an essential mineral and has vast biological and public health importance [5]. It has been found that zinc deficiency is associated with the progression of many diseases and estimates of two billion peoples are associated with zinc deficiencies in the developing world [7]. Despite this, zinc is not estimated routinely in biochemical laboratories. The deficiency of the zinc is …show more content…
Highest concentrations of zinc are present in prostate and parts of the eye [16]. Semen is also found to be rich in zinc, which is the key factor in prostate gland function and growth of reproductive organs [17].
Zinc plays ubiquitous biological roles in humans and interacts with wide range of organic ligands [6]. Stored in specific synaptic vesicles of glutamatergic neurons of brain [18], it also helps in modulating brain excitability [6]. Zinc is known to play a critical role in synaptic plasticity, cognitive functions and learning [18].
In the process of DNA replication and transcription inside the cell, zinc finger play an important role, and form part of several transcription factors. Those transcription factors are proteins that help in the recognition of DNA base sequences. Nine to ten Zn2+ ions help in the formation of zinc finger, and maintain the structure of the finger by building co-ordinately the transcription factor of four amino acids [12]. After wrapping around DNA, the transcription factors are helped by zinc fingers to accurately bind to the sequences of DNA. Researchers have induced a mild zinc deficiency in humans by restricting them to daily intake of 3-5 mg zinc. A reduction in the serum thymulin activity was observed within 12- weeks of a zinc restricted diet. Further a decrease in the ratio of T4+ to T8+, decrease in Interleukin-2 (IL-2) and decreased natural killer cell lytic activity were observed in mildly zinc deficient individuals
