...A People’s History Versus A Patriot’s History Public consensus, similar to politics, varies greatly when it comes to American history, especially as it pertains to the classroom. Views about the content and historical interpretation included in history texts have reached a heightened polarization in recent years. This can be seen in the vast differences between the diatribes of Howard Zinn’s, A People’s History of the United States, and Larry Schweikart and Michael Allen’s, A Patriot’s History of the United States. While both books, prescribed by this introductory course into American History, cover many of the same topics, they clearly paint different pictures. I feel that any text seeking to represent a responsible survey of a subject, should strive to include a full range of views on a particular issue. There is no question that this requirement is fulfilled by the inclusion of both books. However, if one book would need to be selected over the other, my choice would be Schweikart and Allen’s. This is simply because I believe their book offers more facts and details surrounding the historical events in question. In an age where political perspective is often spoon-fed to us by dueling cablenews networks and political talk-radio shows, it is no wonder that our nation’s history is a hot topic for debate. The colonist rationale was “No taxation without representation!” because they knew it was just another way for British to gain money for their debts. This caused rebellions, boycotts and plenty of protests. The Townshend Acts just gave the colonist another reason why they should fight for their independence. The Townshend Acts were introduced soon after the British ministry was seized by the unpredictable Charles Townshend, also known as “Champagne Charley”. Although unstable, Townshend was gifted in a way that he could deliver the most brilliant speeches in Parliament, even while drunk. He persuaded Parliament, in 1767 that he would begin to tax the colonists in order to make up the difference of debt. In order pay off the debt, Townshend placed a light import duty on glass, white lead, paper, paint and tea. This was the first out of the five acts in the Townshend Acts, called the Revenue Act of 1767. Townshend had to be very careful not to put direct taxes, but to make them indirect. Townshend also had to choose certain items that would not hurt British trade but still be able to collect enough income from the colonists. Throughout history there have been many different forms of this practice created all essentially leading its followers to nirvana by riding them of the negative aspects of their life. Buddhist mindfulness meditation is a practice that has been around for what seems like forever and it is just now being seen for many of its benefits in the health field. The purpose of this practice is to transforms one mind and yourself, to be more positive and mindful of the things one does subconsciously. In Andy Fraser’s book, The Healing Power of Meditation, he states, “all fear and anxiety come from a mind that is untamed,” (2013). A cataract is an opacification or clouding of the lens of the eye. Cataracts develop because of the alteration of transport of nutrients and metabolism in the lens. This interferes with light transmission to the retina therefore affecting the ability to perceive images clearly. All cells of the lens formed in the lifetime is retained therefore prevalence of cataracts increase rapidly with aging. WHO estimates that cataracts account for 48% of reversible blindness worldwide, which translates to about 18 million people. Cataracts affect slightly more women than men. The Beaver Dam Eye Study in the US found that 23.5% of women and 14.3% of men had a visually significant cataract by the age of 65 years. Although cataracts can be surgically removed, in many countries surgical services are inadequate, and cataract remains the leading cause of blindness. Age is the greatest risk factor in the occurrence of cataracts. Cataract, though with unclear links, may be acquired through heredity and genetics (e.g., Wilson's disease, galactosaemia, myotonic dystrophy).
