...Malls and Hypermarkets: Perspectives of Contemporary Shopping CHAPTER – 1 INTRODUCTION 18 School of Management Studies, Punjabi University, Patiala Malls and Hypermarkets: Perspectives of Contemporary Shopping 1.1 INTRODUCTION The last decade has witnessed dynamism in Indian retail sector. Various urban areas have been at the center of attraction with emergence of different kinds of organized retail formats gaining momentum. It is largely due to rising income, increasing purchasing power, credit facilities, changing pattern of consumer behaviour and increased consumer awareness. Retailing has emerged as one of the most important sectors of Indian economy beyond the 90s. A large number of retail model retail formats have come in force offering a wide spectrum of merchandise and services. The professional orientation and incorporation of various technology–enabled softwares has offered these retailers better customer relationship management, merchandise offering, store atmosphere and inventory management. There’s a flurry of activity as a revolution sweeps through small town India, with intimidating Malls, Hip stores, looming Hypermarkets & hangouts mushrooming all over the place, apart from a perceptible lifestyle change, breathing fire into these cities (Agarwal, 2006). And it is happening not just in one or two cities, but across all major Tier – II & III cities of India, and in a spectrum of sectors – booming real estate, malls, multiplexes and cinemas, global...

...CHAPTER 1 GENERAL INTRODUCTION INTRODUCTION OF THE STUDY Retailing in India is receiving global recognition and attention and this emerging market is witnessing a significant change in its growth and investment pattern. It is not just the global players like Wal-Mart, Tesco and Metro group are eying to capture a pie of this market but also the domestic corporate behemoths like Reliance, K K Modi , Aditya Birla group, and Bharti group too are at some stage of retail development. Reliance, announced that it will invest $3.4 billion to become the country's largest modern retailer by establishing a chain of 1,575 stores by March 2007. The last couple of years have been rosy for real estate developers and the retailers are finding suitable retail space in prominent locations. The industry is buoyant about growth and the early starters are in expansion mood. There is increased sophistication in the shopping pattern of consumers, which has resulted in big retail chains coming up in most metros; mini metros and towns being the next target. Consumer taste and preferences are changing leading to radical alteration in lifestyles and spending patterns which in turn is giving rise to new business opportunities. Companies need to be dynamic and proactive while responding to the ever-changing trends in consumer lifestyle and behavior. Retailing consists of the sale of goods or merchandise from a fixed location, such as a department store, or by post, in small or individual lots for...

...Impact of Organized Retailing on the Unorganized Sector Mathew Joseph Nirupama Soundararajan Manisha Gupta Sanghamitra Sahu May 2008 INDIAN COUNCIL FOR RESEARCH ON INTERNATIONAL ECONOMIC RELATIONS Foreword The retail sector is expanding and modernizing rapidly in line with India’s economic growth. It offers significant employment opportunities in all urban areas. This study, the second undertaken by ICRIER on the retail industry, attempts to rigorously analyse the impact of organized retailing on different segments of the economy. No distinction has been made between foreign and domestic players, in analyzing the impact of the increasing trend of large corporates entering the retail trade in the country. The findings of this study are based on the largest ever survey of unorganized retailers (the so-called “mom and pop stores”), consumers, farmers, intermediaries, manufacturers, and organized retailers. In addition, an extensive review of international experience, particularly of emerging countries of relevance to India, has also been carried out as part of the study. The study estimates that the total retail business in India will grow at 13 per cent annually from US$ 322 billion in 2006-07 to US$ 590 billion in 2011-12. The unorganized retail sector is expected to grow at approximately 10 per cent per annum with sales rising from US$ 309 billion in 2006-07 to US$ 496 billion. Organized retail, which constituted a low four per cent of total retail in 2006-07, is estimated...

...INTRODUCTION Advertising What is Advertising? Advertising is a non-personal form of promotion that is delivered through selected media outlets that, under most circumstances, require the marketer to pay for message placement. Advertising is, in fact, the most prominent and powerful medium in the present commercial world. It creates an entire world view, shaping our attitude and beliefs. Advertisements permeate every aspect of life and most of us are hardly aware of it. it largely depend on how an individual bring works and so utmost care is taken to exploit the emotions that play an important role in establishing a firm memory of an advertisement and predisposing the consumers to buy the brand that is being advertised. Over a period of time, advertising has been undergoing morphing changes slowly and steadily with multi-facet approach. Advertising has long been viewed as a method of mass promotion in that a single message can reach a large number of people. But, this mass promotion approach presents problems since many exposed to an advertising message may not be within the marketer’s target market, and thus, may be an inefficient use of promotional funds. However, this is changing as new advertising technologies and the emergence of new media outlets offer more options for targeted advertising. Advertising also has a history of being considered a one-way form of marketing communication where the message receiver...

...INSURANCE ADVISORS EFFECTIVENESS FOR PUBLIC AND PRIVATE INSURER: A DEMOGRAPHIC STUDY Krishan Kumar Pandey*Manisha Pandey** Manish Kerwar***Ashutosh Khare**** Dharmendra Singh***** Abstract : Few years back insurance was an arcane word for all of us. Insurance is no longer an unexciting business and the insurance advisor an apologetic salesman. New entries have actually changed the rules of the game in the insurance industry. One such change that has made a huge positive impact in the minds of Indian consumers is the product innovation by the insurance companies. New products are being launched; new distribution channels opened and thousands of sales advisers and managers are being recruited every month. This rapid change is demanding new regulations, new methods of management, new methods of operation and ofcourse considerable development in knowledge, attitude and skills of the workforce. Such times demand business/ output focused people who think widely, are confident about taking risks and decisions and prioritise their own and others’ actions to achieve the business need. Without these attributes the growth pattern that has begun will not be sustained. So are these attributes being developed in people? People know what they should do but they do not necessarily know how to do it. This study is well ahead to evaluate the effectiveness of Insurance Advisors. *, * * Faculty in Prestige Institute of Management, Gwalior * * * , * * * * , * * * * * Alumni, Prestige Institute...
