Double Consciousness is a term coined by W. E. B. Du Bois to define an individual whose distinctiveness is divided into several facets. As a theoretical tool, “double consciousness” discloses the divisions in American society and allows for a full understanding of those separations. The term "double consciousness" originated from an 1897 Atlantic Monthly article of Du Bois's titled Strivings of the Negro People.
