Throughout the short story “The Birthmark”, symbolism is expressed through the usage of theme and imagery. The author Nathaniel Hawthorne addresses that everyone has some kind of flaw, and how that flaw specifically defines that person as him or her. The most significant example of symbolism within the story is the small red birthmark in the center of Georgiana’s cheek. This birthmark is the icon of human imperfection, but the birthmark can also lead to the downfall of the most scholarly people

The story The Scarlet Letter, by Nathaniel Hawthorne, is a story of sin, redemption, and courage. In this article, it talks about how because of Dimmesdale’s “courage” he is very much a tragic hero, even more so than Hester for many reasons. Two points that I agree with from this article are that Dimmesdale is more of a tragic hero than Hester

Many people in the Puritan community of Boston shunned this behavior even though it could ultimately produce a miracle of life.

How the Civil War Changed American Literature The 1860’s was a time of numerous talented writers: Whitman, Emerson, Hawthorne, and Melville. Major writers experienced the civil war in their day to day lives and this began to change what they believed and subsequently changed what they wrote. The abolitionists Thomas Wentworth Higginson studied Ralph Waldo Emerson, whose essays he explained as “starry with statements of absolute truth.” Emerson’s antislavery ideals helped influence positive war
