Psychological Measure Paper
It is well known fact that people suffer from various kinds of depression. They might be from some health problems that they have developed and some issues associated with factors that are attributed to the way they feel about themselves. There are many ways to measure depression or how to scale it on the degrees of danger. In our Paper we are analyzing depressions psychological measures. The measure that is analyzed by us is the Depression Inventory for adolescents. The Depression Inventory for adolescents is an auto- report tool that employs a twenty seven item questions. We will be choosing 2 articles that explain the use of the Depression Inventory for adolescents. In our paper, we will be describing who are qualified for administering and interpreting the setting and measure. This means academic, counseling or occupational in which we optimize the usage of the measure. At the end of our paper, we will classify among the populations for whom the Depression Inventory for adolescents is valid or not valid as a psychological measure.
Article One Becks Depression Inventory is used to measure many different depression circumstances. Above it (what is it?) discusses how the inventory is used and the measurement of how deep depression can go based on Becks inventory. The following article on Becks Depression Inventory involves the connection between two epidemics including depressiveness among disability retirement among unemployed compared to the employed. Researchers created a large group inventory of about 14,487 people between the years of 1998 and 2003. They conducted this survey through the mail in which participants would fill out a survey on their employment status. After the surveys were received the researchers based the depression on Becks inventory. The conclusion was that in 1998 the status was employed with little or no depressiveness present. However, in 2003 it was a different because a total of 329 participants retired within five years of the survey. Among them 4.8 were short-term unemployed and 6.7 were long-term unemployed. The ranges for the short-term unemployed were 3.3-17.9% and the long-term unemployed were 2.6 to 14.2 percent. The lowest numbers of depressiveness however were those of the employed participants that only ranged from 1.4 to 7.1% (Anonymous, 2010). This can help prove that staying healthy can be affected by one's employment status.

Beck Depression Inventory W/ Adolescent Psychiatric Outpatients The Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) is one of the most commonly and widely used self-reporting instruments for measuring and detecting depression in adolescents. (Steer, Kumar, Ranier, and Beck, 1998) When it comes to detecting depression in adolescents it may pose as a problem, some individuals don’t feel comfortable with talking to others about their problems; they will either sit and say nothing or give you an attitude. Adolescents often come off as quiet and shy individuals, not all but some will hide their feelings with a smile or keep to themselves. The reliability and validity of the BDI have been reported to be comparable to that of the BDI-IA, after being administered to 140 adults that were over the age 18, whom were all psychiatric outpatients with different disorders. (Steer, Kumar, Ranier, and Beck, 1998) The Beck Depression Inventory is still used to investigate individuals whom wish to seek treatment with help for their depression disorder. After gathering information from individuals that took the BDI there were several reasons that were concluded as to why individuals may suffer from depression. Results from the BDI stated adolescents suffered from depression due to past failures, self-dislikes, suicidal thoughts, and feeling worthlessness. Self-dislike and worthlessness had the highest percent in ratings from the BDI indicating these two factors were adolescent’s main reason for suffering from depression. As individuals transition through teenage years to become an adult, they want to feel comfortable about themselves and feel as if they are worth the world; these are important years in life and discomfort will lead to depression. Other factors that were determined which led to depression according to the BDI were loss of pleasure/ interest/energy, guilty feelings, and punishment. The overall results indicated the BDI has a high internal consistency and displays factorial validity with respect to assessing the severity of self-reported depression in adolescents. (Steer, Kumar, Ranier, and Beck, 1998) Adolescents go through many problems as they go through the changes, some may speak out about their problems and others will keep quiet or pretend as if nothing is bothering them.

Population for Valid and invalided
The Beck Depression (BDI), test is used as a self-report assessment level that’s accurately illustrates the stress level that depression symptoms that’s caused in each group. The population shows that 90% of the alcohol-dependent tests that have include some depression. Alcohol-Dependent population use BDI-II for addiction and substance-dependent, but more research is necessary for the right test. According to Stapleton, Sander, & Stark (2007), BDI-Y shows that a group of girls test was valid and reliable expect for the eight to nine-years old group of girls. The studies have shown that five ethnic groups test was valid and reliable as well (Stapleton, Sander, & Stark, 2007.). “The BDI-II depression is psychometric evaluations that measures the presence and designed for kids over the age of 13. The BDI-Y is used for kids under 13 and was recommend by Stapleton, Sander, & Stark, (2007).” you should use caution with kids that’s younger than the age of eight. However, more studies have been requested for the substance dependency within the population and the BDI-II is a reliable measuring for depressions level changes over time in clinical environment.
The study of the Beck Depression Inventory II (BDI-II), have showed that girls 9-13 years old, “reliability was slightly lower for nine year old, but reliability and validity estimate did not differ by race or ethnic groups” (Stapleton, Sander, & Stark, 2007)). For a more diverse ethnic group an appropriate norm is needed for the test. The Beck Depression Inventory (BDI).

The Beck Depression Inventory also referred to as the BDI is a test utilized to measure the severity of an individual’s depression. “The BDI was an effective measure of depressed mood that repeatedly demonstrated utility as evidenced by its widespread use in the clinic as well as by the frequent use of the BDI as a dependent measure in outcome studies of psychotherapy and antidepressant treatment”(Beck, Steer & Brown 1996, para. 3). This test is administered to individuals rather than in group settings because it is specific to how an individual’s feelings about themselves and their outlook. The test is given to individuals at least 13 years of age and over, and consists of 21 questions regarding their feeling amongst the last week. The answers range from 0-3, with the higher number reflecting a higher intensity. The test scores are tallied up once the test is completed, 0–9: indicates minimal depression 10–18: indicates mild depression, 19–29: indicates moderate depression, 30–63: indicates severe depression. The BDI has gone through many renovations which lead to the BDI-II in order to make the test more sensitive to interpretation. According to Beck, Steer and & Brown (1996), “The BDI-II retains the advantage of the BDI in its ease of administration (5-10 minutes) and the rather straightforward interpretive guidelines presented in the manual” (pg. 3). The BDI and BDI-II are utilized clinically in order to assess whether an individual is minimal to severely depressed.

In conclusion, these articles helped in finding out how the theories on measurement were employed to detect the depression in adolescent girls. Now, the psychologists can assess whether child patients are in risk or they can be cured with some way. As explained above, the researchers on child psychopathology recommend the use of various assessment measures in combination with the Depression Inventory for adolescents to do proper diagnosis and avoid abuse of this inventory and occurrence misinterpretations (Fristad, Emery, & Beck, 1982). It is well known that there are various ways to identify depression, and these tests can be used to assess and help the kids suffering with depression. We need to consider the variations in gender and age, since the scores of a male and a female cannot be compared as they are distinct individuals in many ways. The Depression Inventory for children was developed to measure the auto-rated depressive symptoms’ assessment in schooling kids and adolescents. The scores obtained in these tests provide a better understanding of the depression developed at various stages of the life.
