Excessively viewing television has recently become an issue, because many are concerned about how it can affect the viewers. Television can be full of violence, sexual content and bad language, which drives away a large percentage of today’s audience. With regard to the ways that television can affect the viewers, it brings more benefits than harm.
Television can be considered as a teaching tool. It promotes another aspect to learning through a variety of techniques and subjects in an attractive way. Students are more likely to understand and gain more information if they have seen and heard through visual learning rather than what they may have read. Educational television comes from channels such as The Discovery Channel, The History Channel, and The Food Network, which are aimed for more adults than children. Furthermore, preschoolers who watch educational programs such as Sesame Street, Barney and Friends, and Blue’s Clues, can learn letters and numbers.

As with everything there are advantages and disadvantages with the television. The main advantage is televisions ability to bring you news as it happens. A second advantage is the fact we are using more than one sense when viewing. The final advantage in this essay is the vast amount of information and documentaries available for viewing. However the first disadvantage is the amount of time spent watching television is often considered a waste of time. The second disadvantage is the fact that families may be in the same room but with the television on may not even acknowledge each other. The final disadvantage illustrated in this essay is that young children are often being exposed to sex scenes and scenes of violence. Firstly, for many of us the television is our first or only source of news and current events. Most channels have news updates up to four times a day and current affairs programmes which take a deeper look at the news that has affected the world that day or week. ...around supply and demand. As a news director and knowing what will benefit the news television station and our ratings, given two stories, one about local city parks being closed down 3 days a week to save money or a major celebrities death. The story that I would chose to make the lead story would be “a major celebrities death”. Yes, both stories will be appealing to the audience and will have attention but one story is more appealing when it comes to ratings and what will benefit both the audience and the television station. In today’s society and media today, supply and demand plays a big role on what the media shows and what stories television stations cover. Begin a television news direct you have to chose what would beneficial to the ratings of the station and the audience. The audience is what makes the ratings happen so pleasing them is an advantage to you in the long run. Some time the right is wrong, which is a perfect example in this case. Even though the story concerning the closing of local park due to the fact of the city saving money might be considered important to the city and the people in the city, the story about the celebrity death will grab the attention of people to watch our television station which is something that we want as the media. Covering this sort of story will be an advantage of both traditional and non-traditional media, this goes for radio, newspaper, Internet and television. ...residents of our county to reap the positive benefits of turning off the television for one month. I know as someone who loves to watch television “all the time” that I definitely could benefit from shutting it down for a month. There are many different benefits for every man, woman, and child. A child’s imagination is stronger when they read vs. watching television. Children that don’t watch television remain innocent longer because they don’t see the horrible things on the news. There is less exposure to violence and sexual situations. Also, less time in front of the television leads to more outside activities and playing for kids, which leads to exercise for everyone. Exposure to violence is at its highest all across the nation. Not only does this relate to violent television shows but violent video games as well. Even cartoons have a lot of violence in them these days. Let’s definitely not forget the violence in the news every day. We need less exposure to violence for children and adults all across the board. For children, early exposure to violence can lead to violent behavior in young adulthood. After exposure to violent television, music, and video games, violent thoughts and behavior are known to increase. This can increase aggression in adults, and children for that matter, and the outcome can become harmful to themselves or to someone else. There is a lot of “sexual situations” that we are being exposed to on television as well. Cartoons, music videos, commercials...

...Joshua McDonald Professor Lesnick English 101 7/28/14 Bye TV In society today, many people’s eyes are glued to the television. It is constantly within the reach of the general public. Throughout the world, television has not only become an important part of our everyday lives, but especially the media that is apart of it. Unfortunately, television isn’t always used in a way by which people receive the best possible benefits. Television does allow for cultural experiences amongst each other to be shared, and it features news and current events which allow for people to be more aware of other cultures. However, although there are benefits to watching television in moderation, people shouldn’t watch too much television because it destroys social interaction and negatively impacts mental development. Leiusure time is defined as time that is spent away from work, chores, business, or education. People over the age of two today often spend, “more than 34 hours a week watching live television plus another three to six hours watching taped programs” (Hinckley). With 168 hours being in a week, people are spending more than 20% of their time watching television. Rather then spending time watching a screen, that time should be spent socially interacting with people within our communities. Often times, we read about crimes happening in our neighborhoods and cities when we had no clue what was going on. A prime example of this is my fifteen year old brother who spends...

...entertainment, we are very dependent on television. We have some shows that we enjoy as a family and because of the age difference and different interest we also have shows that we enjoy watching independently. The necessity of having a home entertainment that is low priced and adaptable to the needs of the family leads to analyze the decision whether to continue with cable television or switch to internet streaming. Home entertainment in America is constantly evolving side by side with technology. The Cable television industry has been dominating home entertainment market for many years but a new industry is now in the challenge, the new competitor is Internet Streaming Service and is also rising with technology. In his book, On-Demand Culture: Digital Delivery and the Future of Movies, Dr. Tyron explains, “Digital delivery not only affects the economic models of the movie industry but also promotes an on-demand culture, in which the practices of movie-going and the perceptions of media culture are transformed. Movie viewers are now re-imagined as individualized and mobile, able to watch practically anywhere or anytime they wish, while having access to aspects of film culture—such as film festivals and art-house movies—that have in the past been available only in specific locations” (Tyron p.173 2013). Internet Streaming Service is part of the “On-Demand culture” that is also part of the competition with Cable TV services. Even though Cable television is adapting to Internet Streaming...

Impact of Tv on Children

...Television viewing is one common activity children engage in for hours hence, its impact on them and adolescents cannot be denied. While television can entertain, inform, and keep these viewers company, it may also influence them in undesirable ways. Some benefits and drawbacks of spending time in front of the tube will be discussed. Television programmes for children have been specially created for them, hence their benefits are indisputable. Educational programmes engage children with cultures, information and news from around the world. Educational programmes like Sesame Street, and The Magic Box introduce children to people and places they would not otherwise encounter in their daily life. Even prime time scripted programmes, if age appropriate, introduce concepts that are complex and intellectually stimulating. This can help shape children’s interest and make them more engaged in classes that deal with those specific topics. Another advantage is that television provides a reason for families to spend time together. While watching a programme, parents can use the content to teach children important values and decision making. On the other hand, too much television can lead to a host of problems. The most disturbing one is when children watch television without any adult supervision. Since they will be exposed to a great amount of violence and unsuitable content, psychologists claim that this can be damaging to their mental health, leading to aggressive behaviour. Furthermore...

...across different media. The aim is to achieve short-term financial gain and long-term brand equity. Since IMC is all about using different Media vehicles, the most effective one is Television; such as Reality television shows which has many benefits and contributions especially when it comes to creating a successful brand. There are two reality television shows that has been analysed from the first part of this assignment and they are: Keeping up with the Kardashians and My Kitchen Rules, which I will then discuss how it relates to branding. Brand equity is important to create and maintain as it is an intangible asset of added value as well as goodwill that will then result from the favourable image, impressions of differentiation and the strength of consumer attachment to brand name, company name or trademark. The stronger the equity the better it positions the company as well as its brand which is only often reinforced through advertising or even sponsoring. For example, Breville appliances command good quality kitchen appliances and represents higher price than the other brands as it is being used by the contestants of My Kitchen Rules. In other words, it is the value that attaches to a brand (Belch & Belch, 2004). Reality television shows is probably the most popular genre of television programme nowadays as this genre documents unscripted situations without writers, features ordinary people instead of professional actors and shows real-life occurrences. In addition...

...Television is a form of media that has great ability to influence and brainwash the viewing public. The talking box in one’s living room has assumed the overpowering role it plays today as a result of the weakness of society. This may seem like a negative view but a society’s strength is based on the relationships between people and when so much time is spent away from others and together with the media, the actions that take place are often times a reflection of what television presents. In President Clinton’s speech, he brings forth this very point and he acknowledges the family’s increasing weakness and calls on all people to bring back the values of the past and stop the media from playing such a huge role in our community. The overwhelming influence of the media is a constant threat to the maintenance of traditional family values and to the protection of our children’s future. Nevertheless, television cannot be changed for it is too big and powerful but compromises can be made that can strengthen society and help keep certain values protected. Over the past decades, people have less and less time in their hands due to careers, divorces and the constant struggle for success. This unfortunately, is resulting in parents spending less time with their children, which is an important responsibility that no one or nothing can replace. President Clinton said, “television… may be the third parent, but it can’t be the first or the second”(Clinton, p.173). The focus on “parental...

The Impact of Tv

...The Impact Of Television Since the beginning, there have been mixed reactions to television and it was E.B. White who wrote "I believe that television is going to be the test of the modern world, and in this new opportunity to see beyond the range of our own vision, we shall discover either a new and unbearable disturbance of the general peace or a saving radiance in the sky. We shall stand or fall by television, of that I am sure." (Murray 7) White was correct, it would either be beneficial or detrimental to society. Ever since the first television station was licensed in 1941, our lives have been effected by the presence of television. However, this effect is not for the negative since it is used from simple means of entertainment to a widely used, invaluable, source of information. It is also an excellent aid in preparing children for school and assisting in educating children after they have begun school. Every day millions of people turn to their televisions as a form of escape from the pressures and stress of day to day life. The television, to them, serves the purpose of entertaining them for a half hour or an hour at a time. This is the purpose of sitcoms, such as the popular NBC produced shows Friends and Fraiser, each appealing to different audiences, but both comedy bases for purposes of entertaining. Humor is not the only approach used in television entertainment. Shows, such as NYPD Blue, use thick plot lines and heavy drama to draw the...

...he will look at the advertisement and start to read it; which will then interest him, so that he will continue to read it; then to persuade him, so that when he has read it he will believe it. If an advertisement contains these three qualities of success, it is a successful advertisement. Television is still the most effective form of mass media vehicle and can be persuasive, provided marketers find a way to convince viewers to pay attention to them. In the era of interactive communications one might assume that the old one-way broadcast channels must be declining in effectiveness. Not only are campaigns that use TV advertising more effective, but TV is actually becoming more effective over time. Several models have been developed which have specifically identified the sequence of events, which must take place between receipt of the message and desired action. AIDA is an acronym that is used by marketers and advertisers to develop a marketing communication strategy and explains a four stage process for the sale to happen. The article talks about how AIDA can aid in creating a purchase if properly implemented through Television as an advertising media. Television's Downfall?

...Downfall? Television has been an important source of media in our culture, before television there was radio, and before that there was print. Today, as technology continues to advance, so does the way that we obtain our media. Computers are now another window that viewers add to their media consumption habits. Access to the internet allows a virtually limitless source of entertainment. Movies, which once could only be seen in theaters eventually became available in the home through VHS and ultimately through BluRay. Brick and mortar stores like Blockbuster had immense success offering consumers the ability to rent movies upon release; but today these retail stores are close to extinct. Newsprint and radio are becoming dying forms of media, and the successful brands will prove to be the ones that are able to adapt through an online market. A study done by the Pew Research Center found that “more people continue to cite the internet than newspapers as their main source of news, reflecting both the growth of the internet, and the gradual decline in newspaper readership (from 34% in 2007 to 31% now)” (Pew, 2011). While television still seems to remain a powerful medium, there is no doubt however that it's viewership is at risk of more and more decline as companies like Netflix and Hulu become more dominant (Goodman, 2013). Websites like Netflix and Hulu are changing the way people watch their favorite shows and movies. Now people are no longer limited to their television or even...
