...Having the Faith to Survive The life of an English peasant around the year 1,000 proved to be quite laborious. Thanks to Sir Robert Cotton, authors Danziger and Lacey were able to tell us how the drawings of the Julius Work Calendar portrayed these individuals. The world was a quaint and quiet place in that time, with a total population of only one million people. “The year 1,000 was an empty world, with much more room to stretch out and breath.” There were three groups of citizens that were spread over the country side. These included workers, fighters and those that prayed for everyone. It seemed somewhat harmonious. The peasants worked for their Lords who took care of them. It was a mundane, but give and take society. “Life was short”. The expected life span was no more than fifty years. A boy of twelve was old enough to give allegiance to the King and a girl often married in her early teenage years. Through excavation, they have found their bones and surprisingly they did not differ much from us. They were the same height and their brains were the same size as ours. It seems to me that they were probably much stronger and smarter because everything had to be learned and preservation of sanity and health had to come from themselves. The Julius Work Calendar shows us that they were very much like us in that they lived by a schedule and got caught up in juggling time. It was a bit more structured for them though. They did not...

...Classified as a Ural-Altaic language, Korean is currently spoken by nearly 78 million people worldwide. In addition to being the primary language in both North and South Korea, Korean is also spoken in parts of China, Japan, Brazil and Australia. Like many languages, the history of Korean can be divided into three distinct eras: Old Korean, Middle Korean and Modern Korean. The era of Old Korean spans a period known as the Three Kingdoms of Korea, which began with the Common Era and ended in about 1000 CE. During the Three Kingdoms, the Korean peninsula was divided into three distinct regions: * Goguryeo, which spanned the northern and middle area of the Korean peninsula; * Baekje, located in the southwestern region; * Silla, in the southeastern zone. This regional divide soon triggered the development of Korean dialects, as regional differences in culture nuanced Old Korean. While the Korean language was evolving, the Silla dialect was adopted as the standard form of the language. This period of time was also marked by the using Chinese ideograms, so-called Hanja. Hanja is the Korean name for Chinese characters (hanzi).[1] More specifically, it refers to those Chinese characters borrowed from Chinese and incorporated into the Korean language with Korean pronunciation. Middle Korean (중세국어, 中世國語) corresponds to Korean spoken from the 10th to 16th centuries, or from the era of Goryeo to the middle of Joseon. The language standard of this period is based on the...

...Business Ethics Task: Read the Rover Case and answer all 4 question-parts This is an Individual work The word limit for each part is 1000 words (+/-10%) The weight of each part is 25 marks Use the Harvard Referencing System for reference purposes Case Study: The ‘English Patient’ and the Chinese takeaway: examining social responsibilities in the MG Rover collapse This case discusses the collapse of Britain’s last remaining major car manufacturer MG Rover in 2005, and the subsequent loss of 6,500 jobs in the former industrial heartland of the West Midlands. The case traces the role played by the firm’s directors as well as overseas car companies in the Rover collapse, and provides the opportunity to examine the nature of social responsibility, and the relative responsibilities of governments and corporations for safeguarding employment. The name Longbridge stands for nearly a hundred years of British car manufacturing. The huge site near Birmingham in the West Midlands area has been the stage for many of the peaks and troughs of automotive history in the UK. Once the birthplace of the sporty, Austin Healey, the legendary Mini, and the practical Metro, the site has also been associated in the 1970s with industrial unrest and union militancy. More recently, the plant had started to become a virtual synonym for industrial downturn and decay, and the reversal in fortunes of the British car industry. It was a history with ups and downs, but the plant seemed...

...English is a West Germanic language that originated from the Anglo-Frisian dialects brought to Britain by Germanic invaders and/or settlers from various parts of what is now northwest Germany and the Netherlands. Initially, Old English was a diverse group of dialects, reflecting the varied origins of the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms of Britain. One of these dialects, Late West Saxon, eventually became predominant. The English language underwent extensive change in the Middle Ages. Written Old English of AD 1000 is similar in vocabulary and grammar to other old Germanic languages such as Old High German and Old Norse, and completely unintelligible to modern speakers, while the modern language is already largely recognisable in written Middle English of AD 1400. The transformation was caused by two further waves of invasion: the first by speakers of the Scandinavian branch of the Germanic language family, who conquered and colonized parts of Britain in the 8th and 9th centuries; the second by the Normans in the 11th century, who spoke Old Norman and ultimately developed an English variety of this called Anglo-Norman. A large proportion of the modern English vocabulary comes directly from Anglo-Norman. Close contact with the Scandinavians resulted in a significant grammatical simplification and lexical enrichment of the Anglo-Frisian core of English. However, these changes had not reached South West England by the 9th century AD, where Old English was developed into a full-fledged literary...

...population in the Northwest Territories. The other population is 45% of English and 28% of French descent. The rest are immigrants from all over the world. Even though English is the most spoken language, Canada has since 1969 had two official languages, French and English, which means that public offices and institutions has to attend in the language the consumer wishes. This bilingualism is probably a result of the particular rights, which the population of Quebec acquired when the brits captured Canada from the French. Quebec has remained a cohesive French speaking area. Just like America, Canada was discovered long before it was discovered. As early as year 1000 the Scandinavians were cutting down trees, and in the 15th century the French, Spanish and Portuguese fishermen were fishing in Newfoundland. It is said that a misunderstanding caused the name Canada. The Indians used the word Kanata for settlement. Columbus understood this as the name of the country itself, and has since then been the official name. In the 17th century, England and France became interested in the areas in North America, which was not already captured by Spain. The battles between the two countries in the 18th century had the consequence that Canada was assigned to the English Crown. After Americas independence in 1776 a lot of American settlers who wished to remain loyal to England moved up north and laid the foundation for the English dominated Canada. Due to the threats from the strong American north...
