Becoming a hero

In the movie 3:10 to Yuma directed by James Mangold Dan Evense tells an inspiring story about a father and son’s relationship that later becomes closer as they set forth on an adventure together to save their families ranch. Dan plays the role of a man who lost his leg due to a friendly fire held during the time of the Civil War. After the Civil War Dan tried to bet his luck on ranching later became a father to his eldest son William. In the movie Dan and William did not have a close relationship like a normal father and son should have. William thought his father was a coward and he believed his father was not a role model to show him how to be a man he wanted to be. As the movie went on, Dan‘s ranch was being threaten to be taken away from him by a dangerous gang leader, Ben Wade. Dan sets off for an adventure to save his ranch by traveling to put Ben Wade on the train and trying to get the reward money. Dan’s son William took off on the quest to travel also with his father Dan. William being the know it all teen that he is thinks he can handle traveling on the dangerous trip with his father and the other men. From traveling on this thrilling adventure, Dan and William’s relationship become closer than ever and William will finally see the role model he always wanted to see in his father. It did not take much time to notice the rocky relationship between Dan and his son William. At the beginning of the movie Dan’s ranch was set on fire. The reason why Dan’s ranch was set on fire was because he did not pay his bills in order to keep the ranch. As the family watched the ranch burst into flames Dan and William rush to save the animals in the ranch and whatever valuables that was not already destroyed. The fire was started by Tucker and his men in an effort to make Dan realize how serious the consequences would be if he did not pay his bill. Dan not being able to do anything in this situation infuriated William. William wanted to react with violence and kill Tucker and his goons. William felt as if his father was acting as a coward for not standing up for himself and his family. So this scene shows how William does not respect his father or look up to him like Dan would like him to. Dan knows he has to do something to gain the respect from his son that he wants. Also the fact that Dan lost his leg only in friendly fire makes him seem weak since he was not actually fighting the war at the time he lost the leg. That is why Dan does not seem very proud when he tells that he lost his leg in friendly fire because he knows it is not noble at all and it is not the heroic story people expect to hear when they are told about fighting in the Civil War. Another thing that affects the relationship between Dan and his son is how Dan treats William. Dan treats William as a child just a young boy that he wants to protect. Dan treats William like this because he is very family oriented and he just wants to protect who ever that’s in his family so they will not get hurt. Dan feels treating William like a child is in William’s best interest because he is only a teenager. This males William very angry which is another reason why he and his father have different point of views throughout the movie. William wants to be treated as a man and try to step into the role as the man in the house. He wants to do this because he feels his own father is not doing the job right as being the man of the house. When Dan accepts the job as bringing ben wade to the train Dan is attempting to be a hero to his kids and wife. He is finally trying to prove to his son William that he indeed has courage and is not the coward William thinks he is. By taking on the job of bringing Ben Wade to contention Dan knows the reward money will be enough to save his land and give a better life to his family. Dan tells William that he must not go because he is to young and just a teenage boy. He wants William to stay with the family because he feels William will not be able to handle the possible danger that the voyage to take Ben wade to the train could have. William felt he could be more of a help than any of the men traveling with his father Dan. He felt he could ride better and faster than them. Dan completely ignored what William was saying and insisted on William staying at the house still. That only worsened the relationship between William and Dan because William felt as if he was being treated unfairly. William goes against his fathers will and follows them at a distance on the voyage to get Ben wade to contention. William remains unseen until during the voyage Ben wade escapes out of his handcuffs and holds everyone at gun point. William comes out behind Ben Wade and puts a gun on him. Dan surprised that William is even there asked William how long he could keep the gun on Ben Wade. When Dan asked William this it shows Dan treating William like a man not just a mere boy. Dan trusting William to keep the gun on a dangerous outlaw gave William the responsibility he wanted in the first place because he feels that he is a man and can handle these dangerous situations involving someone like Ben Wade. Even Ben Wade saw the look in the boy’s eyes to know he might actually shot him if he didn’t drop the gun like he was told by William. Since William held the gun on Ben Wade successfully William shows the courage he feels his dad does not have at all. Even when Dan shows trust in William by asking how long he could keep the gun on Ben William replies he is doing a whole lot better at it then Dan could. This shows William is still not completely convinced of his father being the provider he is supposed to be as the leader and the man of the household. Although William is not confident in his father Dan shows confidence in his son that he is able to handle this voyage and does not even make him turn back towards home at all. This is another positive step in the relationship of Dan and his son William. By letting William continue on this journey Dan is admitting that he feels he was wrong about his son William all along. He now feels that William might be becoming the man he was trying to be in the begging of the movie. William is convincing his father that he deserves to be on this journey and can hold his own in the face of danger at any time he is called on to do so. Throughout the movie Dan and William’s relationship get even closer. When they get Ben Wade to a hotel to hide him in striking distance of the train Dan again put trust in William to be a lookout for Ben Wade’s gang while they hide them in the hotel. Again William comes through and is able to tell his father that Ben Wade’s gang is not very far away and would be arriving any minute to rescue Ben Wade. Dan is again starting to see a man in William instead of just a boy like the beginning of the movie. Dan and his son William relationship have grown a whole lot more since the time Dan requested that William stay home from the journey to take Ben Wade to contention. Dan is starting to put more and more responsibility on his son William that at first he just looked at as a young teen that was not yet ready to be a man. William proving that he can be this man he wants to be encourages Dan even more to become the heroic figure he wants to be for his son William. When it is time to attempt to get Ben Wade to the train a one last fight occurs before Ben can get on the train. William sets a distraction for Dan to get Ben Wade to the train. It was at this time in the movie that Dan looked at William with the confidence that William has proved to be a man and not just a kid. It is when Dan gets shot and killed by one of Ben Wade’s gang that William finally notices the amount of courage his father has shown in getting Ben Wade to the Yuma. William finally looks at his father with admiration as he is dying from being shot. Dan and his son William grew closer to each other without really noticing it during the journey. Dan began to look at his son as a man not just a teenager and William began to look at his father as someone with courage not the coward he thought his dad was in the beginning of the movie.

Mes Cooper’s the Pioneers and the Native American Dispossession

...The typical hero of western films, an Indian slaying John Wayne portrayed as being born from the landscape, has no real presence in James Mangold’s film adaption of 3:10 To Yuma. The focus is mainly on Christian Bale’s character Dan Evans who is first introduced in a domestic space as he stumbles out of bed to find his barn being burned down. Instead of shooting down those who have wronged him like Evans son suggests, Evans decides to ride into town in the morning and discuss the situation. This is where he comes across Russel Crowes character, Ben Wade, as he robs a wagon heavily guarded with Pinkerton guards. Wade is seen as a brutal but reasonable figure, especially in comparison to his partner Charlie Prince. As an outlaw, Wade can’t be a traditional hero but in the face of the greedy railroad company that is portrayed in the film as being very cruel as well, Wade is put in a kind of heroic light. Evans goes to great lengths to provide for his family and he risks death by escorting Wade to a prison train with Wade’s barbaric gang on his back for money. However, Evans really could not have achieved what he did without the cooperation of Wade, who seems to hold a certain amount of respect and sympathy for him. In the end with Evan’s death Wade kills all the members of his gang and climbs on the prison train by choice. This can only be explained by his sympathy for Evan and makes Wade a kind of heroic figure, standing up for Evans who has been victimized by the corrupt railroad...

Comparing The Noble Savage In Adams's Stories And 3: 10 To Yuma

...In The Nick Adams Stories by Earnest Hemmingway and 3:10 to Yuma by James Mangold, Dan Evans and Nick Adams are both struggling to become the noble savage. To be a noble savage they must accept death, be able to survive alone, and be isolated. Nick tries to follow his father's code, known as the hero code. It involves grace under pressure, tacking action, and accepting death. However, Nick is not able to be a noble savage because he is trying to follow his father's code and not his own code. In 3:10 to Yuma, Dan Evans fails to be become the noble savage because he cannot survive on his own. Instead his son, William Evans, has the potential to become the noble savage from the guidance of his father figures. In order for Nick and William to become the noble savage they must be able to exhibit the traits of one as well as beat their own internal struggle. By being the noble savage they can care from themselves and for others. There are two types of savages that appear...

Yuma Territorial Prison

...Despite only being open for a total 33 years as an actual prison, the Yuma Territorial Prison is one of the most important pieces of history that still exists today in Yuma, Arizona. The territorial prison was chosen to be placed in Yuma, Arizona for many reasons. The prison was originally supposed to be placed in Phoenix, Arizona, but two representatives from Yuma, Jose Redondo and R.B. Kelly wrote in the name Yuma and the planning for the building began. The prison was located east of the Gila River, North of the Colorado River, and West of Yuma. One of the reasons behind putting it here was to discourage escaping. In order to come up with the design and layout of the prison, the prison held a contest and the winner would receive $150....

...that is worth quoting in its entirety and addresses, among other things, Pinchot’s idea of what conservation is. “I have today signed S. 1983, the Endangered Species Act of 1973. At a time when Americans are more concerned than ever with conserving our natural resources, this legislation provides the Federal Government with needed authority to protect an irreplaceable part of our national heritage--threatened wildlife. This important measure grants the Government both the authority to make early identification of endangered species and the means to act quickly and thoroughly to save them from extinction. It also puts into effect the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora signed in Washington on March 3,...

Arroyo Fresco Case Study

...Arroyo Fresco Community Health Center Case Study Analysis Abstract Arroyo Fresco (AF) currently provides services through eleven clinics and four mobile service vans across western Arizona. The three counties that are served through AF provide high quality primary care and preventative services to demographic areas with diverse geography, culture, income, and other varying factors (“Arroyo Fresco,” 2006). The facility guides its decision making process for organizational strategies with the combination of FOCUS and SWOT analysis. This allows for a well-rounded check and balance system to manage and prepare for current and future strategies for short term and long term processes. The increase in financial demands, consumer expectations, partnerships and mergers, quality of care given, and health care reform restructuring have placed a lot of expectations on health care facilities (“Creating an ethical culture,” 2011). The organizational strategy proves to be an important structure in order to provide a clear definition on how AF can change over time in order to successfully deliver a strategy and action plan that will benefit the short term and long term projections within the company (“Executive Insight,” 2008). AF has an found areas to improve the job descriptions, relationships, and management processes (Miles, Snow, Meyer, and Coleman, 2013). My Darling Clementine Hero

...The film My Darling Clementine displays Wyatt Earp as an individual who understand he has responsibilities, but also puts on a tough exterior. The film also gives insight to Earp's emotions, showing him having faults and thus presenting the viewer with a realistic and humanistic view of the character. Earp, the legendary rogue, is perhaps a wash of the real man, as there was an inclination that perhaps My Darling Clementine is actually a romanization by Ford of the west. The struggle of founding a new civilization, leaving it all behind and living a rogue lifestyle hardly is shown by Earp, though I believe his loss in the movie, primarily his brother and Doc, do demonstrate he is a tragic hero, as opposed to a more cookie-cutter hero. Wyatt...

Healthcare

...In the past 15 years, the demand for free or low-cost health care has grown, and FQHC capacity has expanded in response (see Figure 1). Since the mid-1990s, the ranks of uninsured Americans grew faster than the general population, while the willingness of private physicians to provide charity care declined.2 In addition, the proportion of the U.S. population covered by Medicaid increased from approximately 10 percent in 1999 to 17 percent in 2010.3 Federal support for FQHCs ramped up during the Bush administration (2001-08) and has continued under the Obama administration. Direct federal funding for FQHCs increased from roughly $750 million in 1996 to $2.2 billion in 2010, helping to increase the number of FQHC organizations nationally from about 700 to 1,200—with more than 8,100 sites of care. The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 added another $2 billion in temporary FQHC funding for capital and service improvements through 2010. http://www.hschange.com/CONTENT/1257/ What Happens to Indian Health Services? _Indian Health Care Improvement Act (IHCIA) was permanently reauthorized for IHS, Triballyoperated programs, and Urban Indian Programs. _Authorizes more IHS services - ex: behavioral health, prevention programs, hospice, assisted living, long term, home & community-based care. _Numerous grants opportunities under the ACA for workforce development, trauma centers, preventive care, early childhood programs, innovative healthcare models...

Population Distribution of Nepal

...Assess the factors which affect the distribution of population in your country. Population distribution means the pattern of where people live. World population distribution is uneven. Places which are sparsely populated contain few people. Places which are densely populated contain many people. Sparsely populated places tend to be difficult places to live. These are usually places with hostile environments e.g. Antarctica. Places which are densely populated are habitable environments e.g. Europe. If we look at the population distribution of Nepal, we find that the population is not equally distributed in all parts of the country. The distribution of the population is unequal due to the diversity in land structure, climate, soil and available natural resources and means. More population is concentrated in the places where the facilities such as transportation, employment, education, health services, communication, etc. are available. The places where these facilities are not available have less population pressure. For example, the Terai region of Nepal has many facilities such as employment, transportation, communication, etc and because these, more population is concerned in this region. But the mountainous region of Nepal is pretty cold with difficult land topography. The facilities of transportation communication, employment etc. is also not available there. Therefore, the population is sparsely distributed in the mountainous region of Nepal. The value for Population density...
