1. General Introduction to technology

Technology is a vast area that wraps the majority of the world. Emergence of

technology is the milestone of the world history. Ever since the invention of fire from

rubbing two stones, technology has enormously developed in almost all the parts of

the world. The context surrounding the emergence of technology matters. The

reason for the emergence at that particular time and the impact and the

consequences of the emergence of that particular technology play important roles in

relating the context. This paper focuses on two major expanding technologies;

mobile phones and 3D printing.

1.1. Introduction to 3D printing

Three dimensional printing â_œemploys an additive manufacturing process whereby

products are built on a layer-by-layer basis, through a series of cross-sectional

slicesâ__ (Berman, 2012, para.2). 3D printing is compromised of various other

technologies and the commonly used software is the Computer aided design also

known as CAD. 3D printing is a developing concept that is yet to bring a lot of new

creations into the world of technology.

1.2. Introduction to Mobile phones

Mobile phone is a mobile device traditionally used to make and receive calls. There

are many categories in mobile phones. For example, smartphone is â_œa category of

mobile phones that read email, take pictures, and surf the internet in addition to

making and receiving callsâ__ (Flew & Smith, 2011, p.72). Because of the

advancement of the mobile phone technology, majority of the population use them in

their day to day activities and mobile phones play a vital part in peopleâ_™s lives.

3D printing and mobile phone technology are two major landmarks in this

mechanical world and their reason for emergence and the consequences of the

emergence in all sectors are tied to the context surrounding the emergence of those

technologies.

2. 3D printing

As mentioned earlier 3D printing which stands for three dimensional printing is

a new era of traditional printing which solely used inkjets or lasers to produce copies

in printing. 3D printing uses layering methods to produce three dimensional objects.

2.1. Emergence of 3D printing

Traditional printing has been playing a major role in reproducing copies of

documents, photographs and much more and printing and scanning essential or

required documents and papers ever since the printer was invented. The emergence

and the introduction of 3D printing at this particular point of time; although the

traditional printing still exists relates that context surrounding the 3D printing matters.

Is 3D printing an advancement of the traditional printing? Yes, the answer seems

pretty much obvious. Three dimensional printing is being used to print personalized

objects in three dimension rather than papers or other forms of paper in two

dimensions.

2.1.2. Manufacturing process of 3D printing

â_œComputer-aided design (CAD) software is used to slice a digital object into layers

as thin as 10 microns; the 2D pattern of each layer is transmitted to the 3D printer,

which extrudes, sprays, or spreads raw material onto a flat, horizontal platform; the

material is cured, laser-sintered, fused, or bound by UV light, lasers, or electron

beams. The process repeats until the object is fully formedâ__ (Matthews, 2011, p.25).

Manufacturing is a great example to illustrate how context surrounding the 3D

printing matters. The same principle of traditional printing is applied to the three

dimensional printing. It uses powder that is slowly constructed into an image on a

layer by layer basis instead of the traditional ink and laser technology. In this case

the traditional printing has provided a pathway for the emergence of a new 3D

printing technology.

2.1.1. The evolution of 3D printing

According to Berman (2012) the three dimensional printing went through a three

phase evolution process. Prototypes or mockups of new design were made using 3D

printing technology by designers in phase one. Developing prototypes and mockups

is economically cheaper to produce, easy to produce and access, secure and user

friendly. â_œThe second evolutionary phase of 3-D printers involves their use in creating

finished goodsâ__ (Berman, 2012, section 2, para.4). Berman (2012) further adds that a

second phase application encompasses bridge manufacturing and the

manufacturing of goods to be used in test marketing. Test market plays a significant

role since numerous prototypes of different size, styles and colors can be produced

and market tested. The third phase provides full access to final consumers in which

case people are provided with opportunities to get online download and print out

what they need. These phases of 3D printing have gradually increased the pricing of

3D printers enormously.

2.2. Major consequences of 3D printing for society, economics and politics

While speaking about the context, consequences of 3D printing to the society,

politics and economics also play an important role in understanding 3D printingâ_™s

significance. Creativity in designing, sharing and printing is absolute advantages and

consequences of 3D printing to the society. Although it is expensive to buy 3D

printing machines and producing objects in the current world, it might get affordable

as this technology becomes more accepted in the market. Finally from the point of

view of politics, â_œPresident Obama announced the pilot institute in March as part of a

$1 billion plan for a network of 15 "Institutes for Manufacturing Innovation" around

the nation, serving as hubs that help manufacturers and encourage domestic

investmentâ__ (Larsen, 2012, para.10). On the whole, context surrounding the

emergence of the 3D printing matters and plays an important role in representing 3D

printingâ_™s significance.

3. Mobile phones

Mobile phones are one of the fastest growing technologies in the world. Apart

from the first generation mobile phones which were solely used to make and receive

calls, existing types of phones are used for all kinds of purposes like texting,

emailing, surfing internet, taking pictures, editing and much more. Emergence of

3.1. The origins of Mobile phones

Land phones and mobile phones vastly differ because of the portability and the

wireless communication technology. According to Flew & Smith (2011), Marconi, the

inventor of radio laid the stepping stone for the invention of mobile phones by

introducing radio signals. The first cellular telephones were the outcome of the

miniaturization of computers. Second most common invention was the â_œthe brickâ__

phones. â_œThese phones were based on an analog transmission and reception

technology and as a result were expensive, heavy, and consumed batteries at an

alarming rate. The third boost came from digital cell phones, which accomplished the

same thing as earlier phones but with far less power and hence smaller size and

lower costâ__ (Flew & Smith, 2011, p.75). Transformation of the mobile phones from

different features, sizes, memory and consumption of batteries is a great example for

the context surrounding the emergence of mobile phones matters.

3.2. Mobile phone design

3.2. Design of the mobile phones matters a lot in the present world. Even a keypad is

modifiable with different colors and latest outlook designs. According to Claudine

(2005), the quality of the mobile technology depends on ease of use, cost, reliability,

success in achieving relevant need and simplicity of design. Current era generation

always want to seek something new and different in mobile technology and

designing mobile phone is an important part of mobile phone technology.

3.3. Major consequences of emergence of mobile phone for society, economics and

politics

Independence, environmental concerns, and health issues are major issues

associated with the emergence of mobile phones. â_œMobile phones are made in

factories all over the world and as such have a very high carbon load in the form of

transport energyâ__ (Flew & Smith, 2011, p.90) is an major environmental concern of

the society. There are so many network business corporations making enormous

money because of the advancement of mobile phones. Moreover, evolution of

mobile phones has lead and is leading to various types of new technologies.

4. Conclusion

3D printing and mobile phone technology are two major landmarks in this

mechanical world and their cause for emergence and the consequences of the

emergence in all economics, politics and society are tied to the context surrounding

the emergence of those technologies.
