...Light VS Dark XOXOXO ENG/220 October 30, 2014 XOXOX Light VS Dark “Light beer has no flavor”, “dark beer is too heavy” common arguments that are made in the ongoing battle of light versus dark beer. With a recent boom in the craft beer breweries and mega breweries that have been known for years, there are more choices now than ever. Some people choose to have a cool, refreshing light beer, while others choose a bold, flavorful dark beer. The truth is, it is all relative to a person’s personal preference. There are many differences between the two types of beers, but three of the main differences are the way they are brewed, marketed to the public, and the culture associated with each beer. The Brewing Process It is the grain that really makes the difference in the color of the finished beer; this is true whether the beer is made in a large scale brewery or in a mom and pop outfit. Of course, most beer is made from the same grain (barley), though others are brewed with wheat, oats, rye, rice, quinoa and virtually any other grain available, all of which impart their own character to the brew. However, how darkly the malt has been roasted is what gives color and body to the beer. The darker the roast, the darker the beer that results from this ingredient. The roast affects the color of the finished beer as well as the body and many of the flavors in the brew as well. For example, a dark beer tends to have a deeper, more complex set of...

...Joshua Biship James Mense English 102 05 October 2014 Billy Ansel: Dark or Light? In the book, The Sweet Hereafter by Russell Banks a story is told of tragedy that strikes a small town. Banks tells this story through multiple character each of which brings their own understand and view of the accident. Billy Ansel was one of the characters used to convey his message. Billy is a parent of two children in the town of Sam Dent. Billy is a veteran, business owner, and widower. All of these moving parts have played huge roles in shaping the character that Billy portrays but nothing could prepare him for losing his children. At the beginning of the story Billy is shown as a person to look up to and rely upon in hard times. But there is another side to Billy that is explored in the latter half of the book. Through the revelation of more detail Billy’s character is better-rounded and with that rounding he also slips into a darker side of himself. This side which is far darker and hidden from the public is brought to the surface when Billy losses his children and changes forever. Billy first appears in the story as a father who was raising his twin children on his own after his wife passed away from cancer. He is waiting in the kitchen for the bus to arrive like he does every morning. Dolores Driscoll is the school bus driver picking up Billy’s children. Dolores is fond of Billy and gives us a view into who she thinks he is. “I always liked stopping at Billy’s. For one thing, he...

...In James Joyce’s Araby, a young boy becomes strife with strong love for a girl, Magnan’s sister that his friend knows after seeing her countless times while he lies wait in the shadow behind the curtains of his room silently watching until she comes out so he could chase after her. This urgent lust has begun to cast a darkness upon the narrator, causing a shift in behavior all towards the achievement of being with Magnan’s sister. Throughout James Joyce’s Araby, an image appears of contrasting black and white where an object is surrounded by a blinding light that the subject is only outlined and what lies within is unknown, and this obsessive secrecy has caused the narrator to become flawed by the belief that Magnan’s sister is real to which in the end he is casted down by his own inner imaginative evil. An image of a blackened figure caused by the flooding exterior light gives the aspect of how that all is seen or known is this outlined exterior and nothing can be said about what lies inside the lines cast between worlds. The narrator, a young boy, is hiding amongst the shadows for a glimpse of a girl that lives across the street. It is never told why the narrator has found a sudden interest in this girl other than her looks have given thought, which gives it all the more a sense of peculiarity as the narrator continues to seek her out every night when she comes home and every morning “…watching her door. The blinds was pulled down…so that I could not be seen. When she came...

...This essay is over the novel The Scarlet Letter and this is an essay about three main controversial characters that were key to this story. The main points focused on in this essay were good and evil deed and actions they have done throughout the novel and how it affects the readers overall attitude at the end. Throughout the novel, Hawthorne uses the symbols of light and dark to depict good and evil among the characters Hester Prynne, Arthur Dimmesdale, and Roger Chillingworth. Hawthorne introduces Hester by saying, “She came forth into the sunshine” (72). The sunshine shows Hester has some light coming down on her instead of the town looking down on her and her sin of adultery that she has committed. One of my other details on this reference is, Hester being in the dark prison means she had no freedom, but outside with the light shining on her she had her freedom back. Another dark quote was, Hester said, “Thee must gather thine own sunshine, for I have none to give thee” (Hawthorne 95). This meaning that Hester’s sin shows she has no sunshine to give other because he sin has erased all good she had once had in her....

...Drinking beer is a favorite past-time, whether for the variety of types, or the history, or just enjoying an ice-cold mug of brew with your friends. People want to know what makes a light lager light, and what makes a dark lager dark? Is it the ingredients in the brew or is it how it’s made? Light lagers only came about around the 60’s and 70’s because people wanted to drink beer without getting fat. Basically light lagers are made from using less hops and barley in the brewing process and watering down the lager, essentially creating a lighter color and less filling beer. Almost every beer is either ale or a lager. Lagers are fermented at colder temperatures than ales. They tend to have cleaner, crispier flavors and tamper-down aromas. When it comes to the color though, it comes down to the Maillard reaction. The Maillard reaction came around in the late 1800’s by the work of a French chemist known as Louis-Camille Maillard. This reaction is one of the most important reactions to know in how lager looks different from an amber or a stout beer. This reaction may also be known as “browning” in the brewing world. It’s basically heating sugar until the sugar compound is by itself and having amino acids react the reducing sugar. It is to be known that the reaction only happens at elevated temperatures but it can happen at room temperatures as well. Caramelization has similarities to the Maillard reaction as well which gives beer its final color. Color that a lager or ale is measured...

...Light Over Dark: The Choice Romeo and Juliet Didn’t Make The purpose of the light/dark motif in Romeo and Juliet is to show how Romeo and Juliet are unable to tell light from dark, or good from bad. I think everyone has the potential to distinguish what choices lead to “light” and what choices keep them in the “dark”. So Romeo and Juliet had that potential but I don’t think they wanted to know about that, since nothing else mattered to them but them. In this play, Romeo and Juliet do never make a clear choice of light over dark because they almost do not want to deal that decision in the middle of their romantic journey. They could have brought their situation which was becoming more of a mess each day, into the light by talking openly about it. However that would’ve ended the feud between the families that would have to be dealt with in some way and I’m sure Romeo and Juliet would not have lost their lives doing that. By ignoring their responsibilities and ignoring the darkness that was rising on them quickly both Romeo and Juliet allow tragedy to take them both. In the first scene, Romeo is depressed because his love for Rosaline is a one-way love. His parents are worried because Romeo spends all his time in the dark. Even when it is light, he shrouds himself in darkness to reflect his dreary mood: Away from the light steals home my heavy son / And private in his chamber pens himself / Shuts up his windows, locks fair daylight out / And makes himself an artificial night (I...

...Name Instructor Course Date Dark Nebulae Dark nebulae are nonluminous nebulae that are observable since it obscures light from other sources. Nebulae are diffuse clouds of interstellar dust and gas. The shape, size, and characteristics of nebulae may vary significantly because some are the remains of dead stars and others are star nurseries. Dark nebulae are found in areas with no nearby stars. These clouds do not emit or reflect enough light for them to be visible. In fact, the view from the stars behind them is usually blotted out by the dust particles. This paper will exclusively explore on dark nebulae. Normally, these clouds range from 1-10 AU and are less dense than the deepest vacuum in the laboratories of the Earth. They are also thick such that they obscure light from the stars behind them. However, the size of these clouds can be from a few light years up to 600 light years. Additionally, the total mass of dark nebulae can reach several million masses of solar. These clouds can appear to be big depending on the number of stars in it. If there are many stars, the clouds will appear huge, but it can appear small if there are a few stars in it. These clouds existed from a long time ago. Claudius Ptolemaeus did the first record of stars that appeared to be nebulous around 150 AD. Since then, many astronomers have continued discovering these clouds until an American astronomer Beverly Turner Lynds compiled and published a survey of dark nebulas in the year 1960. However...

...In the beginning there was only light. No one was around and nothing existed except for light, of course. Then out of the void came Calida and Deniz. Calida was the element of fire whereas Deniz was the element of water. Although even though they were complete opposites the two were best friends that rarely argued. However, they had one intense argument that lead to the end of their friendship. Nobody really knows what the argument was about but many believe the conflict ended with Deniz putting out Calida’s flame. In anger both of the former friends created new friends from the light, Avani and Aria. Avani was the element of earth and Aria was the wind element. Right from the start Avani and Aria hated each other because Avani was Calida’s friend while Aria was Deniz’s friend. They were enemies even though the natural elements they represent did not clash in any way. From then on out there was nothing but chaos. With their elements they divided the light into two separating it with walls of fire, long rivers, wing storms, and mountains. As all of this war going on the light began to get agitated and started to create more. The most important thing that was created was darkness. A half of the light that hasn’t been taken over turned ravens black....

...Hawthorne’s Characters Nathanial Hawthorne’s book The Scarlet Letter has a lot of light and dark references. I myself didn’t really enjoy the book, but I learned a lot from it. I recommend this book if you like to read books about the Puritan times. You can also learn a lot about the dress and style. The Scarlet Letter is a well know novel that a lot of people enjoy. Throughout the novel, Hawthorne uses the symbols of light and dark to depict good and evil among the characters Hester Prynne, Arthur Dimmesdale, and Roger Chillingworth. The light portrays on Hester because she helps the homeless and the dark portrays on Hester because the sunshine will not fall on her. “She cares for and attends to the spiritual needs of her fellow human beings” (SparkNotes Editors). Eventually towards the end of the book Hester has light portraying on her because after moving away she comes back and becomes a seamstress again and she also helps her fellow people spiritually. Hester is still reminded of her sin, in a way her sin is gone because she has confessed for so long and she helps her people in need. Hawthorne stated “The...

...HEAT ABSORBATION BY DIFFERENT COLOUR It is a known fact that all objects gives off energy. At the same time, all objects takes in energy, too. The color of an object affects what colors of light the object gives off and what it absorbs. The color of an object relies on the wavelengths of colors reflected from the object. A red apple has a red color because the red wavelengths in white light are reflected and other wavelengths are absorbed. But if a red apple were to be illuminated by light that had no red wavelengths, the apple would appear almost black. The reason material looks dark is it absorbs most of the light that hits it. On the other hand, a material that cannot absorb radiation will reflect it to your eyes, making the material look like the color of the light and giving it a lighter. It naturally follows then that if a surface absorbs most of the light hitting it, the surface heats up quickly. Black or dark colored materials and objects give off and absorb in heat the fastest. The reason for this is that lighter colors have a greater Albedo, which means, they reflect more light. Instead of thinking of dark colors as absorbers of heat, darker colors are actually better absorbers of light. Darker colors absorb comparatively more light. Since light is energy, an absorption would increase a materials temperature. Hence, darker colors become better radiators of heat. It is important to note that an object appears white if it reflects all colors and black if it absorbs...

...Heart of Darkness Essay Light and dark imagery is one element most commonly used in literature, and has held specific symbolic meanings for hundreds of years. Simply stated, light generally symbolizes good, while darkness symbolizes the complete opposite, evil. More specifically, Conrad uses detailed imagery of light and dark to show that white men can in fact be more savage than the natives. While the contrast of light and dark, white and black, and good and evil is a common theme in his novel, Conrad reverses the meanings of the two. In his story often the light is viewed as more menacing and evil than the darkness, and the white characters more spiteful than the black. In Heart of Darkness, Joseph Conrad uses light and dark imagery and the reversing of their regular meanings as a main focal point throughout the novel. Conrad establishes throughout this the theme that not everything is as it seems. Conrad uses light imagery as a symbol of civilization. Darkness is defined as the absence of light just like the black jungle is defined as the absence of white man’s civilization, a civilization full of corruption and evil. Conrad’s first description of Brussels is an example of this. “In a very few hours I arrived at a city that always made me think of a white sepulcher.” It is significant that Conrad describes the building as a white coffin, because the job there is sending men out to retrieve ivory, ultimately resulting in their death. This cycle of evil begins and ends in...

...of archetypes contributes to the overall strength of the novel. During when the various times the “light vs dark” archetypes are utilized and when the archetypical death and rebirth occurs to convey the extent of which the novel is strengthened by archetypes. In Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451 the light vs dark archetype helps show to what extent archetypes are used to strengthen the novel when Montag is conversing with Clarisse after Mildred began reading her script. The author states “He felt his body divide itself into a hotness and a coldness, a softness and a hardness, a trembling and a not trembling, the two halves grinding one upon another.”{Bradbury 21}. In this passage Bradbury is showing that inside Montag the light and dark are warring against each other. As light vs dark are opposites the author uses opposites to show the relationship between the two, for example the comparison between cold and hot, the cold represents the dark as darkness is inherently cold as light provides heat. The two parts grinding against each other show to the light and dark at war, as they at odds at one other. Since they cannot coexist the light and dark in this situation refer to the Montag, in that they are his struggle to free himself from the ignorance that is his societal beliefs. The author also states when Clarisse and Montag walk to her house, "When they reached her house all its lights were blazing" (Bradbury 7}. As this may come across as insignificant, in actuality it shows that as...
