A Modest Proposal by Jonathan Swift is a story that may confuse readers, or even gross them out. Swift wrote the story with a certain agenda in mind. He wanted to create a piece about a solution he thought would solve problems in Ireland. While he was writing the story, he wanted to inform the readers on what he believed was a solution to reduce poverty in Ireland. This story is not to be taken literal, because Swift wrote it as an ironic piece to catch readers attention.
While reading “A Modest Proposal” I had so many thoughts about the author. My first reaction to the proposal offered in this essay was “Is Swift being serious?” Why would any human being suggest, or even think about eating children in the effort to reduce poverty. I kept telling myself that if any human being that thought that scarfing a life would make everything better …show more content…
At the time he had wrote his proposal, the county was suffering. Ireland was over populating, and they had no way to solve it. Across the country poor children were living in dirty, unsafe places because a lot of families were not able to support, or feed their children. There were women who had no husband because they would leave them, so the mothers had to be in charge, and try to support their children with food and clothes. In the story, “A Modest Proposal” by Jonathan Swift it states on the first paragraph, “These mothers instead of being able to work for their honest livelihood, are forced to employ all their time in strolling to beg sustenance helpless infants who, as they grow up, either turn thieves for want of work, or leave their dear native country, to fight for the Pretender in Spain, or sell themselves to the Barbadoes.” Swift is informing the readers on what is happening in the city of Dublin. There was not a whole lot being done, and Swift came up with a proposal which would solve everything in

A Modest Proposal

...Assignment #1: Surprise Ending in The Modest Proposal A Modest Proposal by Jonathan Swift is a satirical story with lots of sarcasm. This proposal was written to shock or force the government into a reaction. As the government read his proposal it should bring about a response. This proposal suggests a “barbaric solution” that amounts purely to cannibalism. Mr. Swift’s idea is to help end poverty and decrease the amount of women beggars by eating babies of the poor. He devised a plan where he would take 20,000 babies and decide how many would be sold, how many would be breeders thus creating a balance between rich and poor. Mr. Swift’s plan would give the poor a means of income and the wealthy would get a fine and delicate meal. He stated that feeding on Irish babies was a treat and the English should be honored to feast on the babies. Swift based his proposal on facts and figures of many years of analyzing the situation. He does seem well educated and well versed on his proposal. He noted several benefits and advantages to his proposal. Some of those benefits included women being more loving towards their children. Another benefit would be more marriages happening with men catering to their wives while they were pregnant. Swift also quoted a friend that was a modern day swindler. The friend was supposedly from Formosa and told a story where 18,000 young boys were sacrificed to the Gods’ and Priests’. The Gods’ dined on the hearts and the Priests’ dine on...

A Modest Proposal Rhetorical Analysis

...Reading Response #4 My initial reaction to a “Modest Proposal was that it was going to be about adoption or child trafficking. But after reading “A Modest Proposal I was very surprise and start to get highly upset while reading it. I don’t understand how Jonathon Swift in his right mind thought it would be okay to make fun of killing children and eating them or wearing them as an accessory. Being a mother I would lose my mind and do life in prison if someone took or even thought about making me sell my child. Johnathon Swift went overboard with his satire because an innocent defenseless child’s life is nothing that should be played with or considered a topic for a satire. After reading the “The Rape of the Lock”, I think Pope was a bitter...

...World Cultures II: Humanities Assignment 1: Essay Professor Erhart Jasmine Hicks 1/26/16 When reading A Modest Proposal for preventing the children of poor people in Ireland, from being a burden on their parents or country, and for making them beneficial to the public I found it very interesting. John Swift decided to come up with a scheme to prevent mothers who begged to feed their children and to stop the rise of population. The scheme he proposed was to sell the healthiest children to people who were well off to be able to feed one another. He also would sell them to help in the labor department such as, farming and making clothes for one another. He also proposed to narrow it down to one male serving four women. I found this very surprising because usually when a population is to high many people would just sell the people to different parts of the world. That way you won’t have to brutally kill someone. Although I disagree with the method he proposed, he stated a great response which led to his proposal. He doesn’t want to see the less fortunate beg to feed and clothe the children they can’t provide for. So he found a solution to both stop the population from growing and to allow the less fortune to not caring such a burden. In my opinion he succeeded in trying to persuade me on his decision. I feel this is so because he was not trying to do this for a profit. He simply wanted to help his people and took the conversation he...

Married Women In The Late 1800's

...let women get in the way of them making money, so they tried to make sure they did not have a say by voting. Women had never been allowed in saloons or in bars and did not support them, and usually, only men would drink, so if women had the right to vote prohibition would have started earlier. The Seneca Falls convention where Elizabeth Cady Stanton gave her Declaration of Sentiments was mocked because it “generated widespread ridicule” and for its “hostility” (Declaration of Sentiments). The convention was ridiculed and received negative connotations by religious leaders and the press for not being a modest proposal like women should be. They believe that the way the women went about arguing for rights was viewed as absurd. That if women want to try to promote rights they should go about it more modestly. Many viewed the Declaration of Sentiments to be an “absurdity” of a proposal (Declaration of Sentiments). The anti-suffragist felt that Stanton was asking for too much, asking to be superior rather than equal. Anti-suffragist feared women gaining rights or believed that they were not oppressed to need...

Mr. Sinai

...western Republicans joined to support passage of an individual income tax. Some observers believed the justices would invalidate an income tax, just as they had done so in 1895. Others however, thought the Court had changed to reflect growing bipartisan and popular support for the levy. A few income tax supporters wanted to press the issue regardless of the Court's likely response, eager to make the case for progressive taxation. In any case, the income tax coalition developed a moderate proposal and sought to attach it to tariff legislation in the Senate. In doing my research I found out that the GOP leaders were alarmed by rebellion in their own levels, with numerous Republican progressives indicating their support for a new income tax. Senate Finance Committee Chairman Nelson Aldrich tried to fend off the income tax proposal, but pro-tax forces enjoyed considerable momentum, this was indicating that the proposal was on its way for the federal income tax. Worried that Aldrich would lose the battle, I believe that the purposes for these income tax are that president Taft convinced the senator that a modest tax on corporate income would siphon off support for general income taxation. In doing so, it would deny victory to the congressional income tax coalition, preserving GOP unity. Framed as an excise tax on the privilege of doing business as a corporation, the levy was carefully designed to sidestep constitutional issues surrounding the income tax. As Taft had predicted, the...

Consider the firm’s overall competitive strategy and proceed as follows: 1. How would you describe HPL and its position within the private label personal care industry ? HPL is a private label manufacturer of personal care goods. HPL is a private label manufacturer of personal care goods. They started in 1992 with the purchase of Simons Health and Beauty Products. In 2007, they generated $681 million in revenue. The company’s production is estimated to account for about 28% of the $4 billion sold in their product category. HPL was offered the opportunity to significantly increase its share in private label manufacturing by its largest retail customer. It involved quite a bit of risk. It was the largest investment they had seen and it called for a 3-year contract, which is considered short. Termination of business after expiration of the contract and ensuing heavy losses were some of the risk involved. If the company were to succeed, they could ensure long-term business with a powerful retailer. A special quality of the private label business is that manufacturers generally produce at levels demanded by the retailers they produce for. Growth in the market was modest, leaving manufacturers...

Financing the Climate and Other Global Public Goods

...livelihoods and welfare of their people. Climate change is the classic example. Despite the risks involved, donor governments have funded programs addressing global challenges such as climate change at far lower levels than traditional programs of country-based development assistance. The prospects for dealing with such global challenges will depend at least in part on new collective financing mechanisms. In this paper, we examine four categories of existing resource-mobilization options, including (1) transportation levies; (2) currency and financial transaction taxes; (3) capitalization of IMF Special Drawing Rights (SDRs); and (4) the sale, mobilization, or capitalization of IMF gold. In the end, we recommend that willing governments utilize a modest portion of their existing SDR allocations to capitalize a third-party financing entity. This entity would offer bonds on international capital markets backed by its SDR reserves. The proceeds would back private investment in climate-mitigation projects in developing countries that might otherwise lack adequate financing. This approach could mobilize up to $75 billion at little or no budgetary cost for contributing governments. Any limited budgetary costs could be offset by using excess proceeds from recent IMF gold sales. In our view, capitalizing a small portion of existing global assets—SDRs with a small back-up reserve of the income from gold already sold—to finance programs that deal with global public goods and bads makes eminent sense...

Since the 20th century, several United States presidents have faced challenges in passing national health reform into law. Before the ACA was enacted, national health reform proposals under different governments in the United States faced strong opposition from various stakeholders and multiple interest groups. Therefore, the enactment of the ACA is revolutionary healthcare reform in the history of the United States. In other words, health insurance is a system that provides protection against health costs. This newly legislated healthcare reform offers health insurance for all Americans and legal residents in the United States. The Law Commission acknowledged this problem and conducted a three-year review into social care legislation.
