Course Catalog Description:

Theory and practice issues in income concepts and value measurement; GAAP; revenues, costs, assets, liabilities, and equities.

Prerequisites:

ACCTG211 or ACCTG311

Course Objectives:

1. To apply the conceptual foundation of financial accounting; 2. To apply accounting standards; 3. To evaluate and select among alternative accounting treatments for economic events, and 4. To interpret the results and financial position of an entity.

Learning Goals:

* Collaborative skills: Students will develop collaborative skills by working together to solve exercises during class. * Communication skills: Students will submit written assignments and exams that should exhibit clear communication as would be found in a business setting. * Professional Responsibility/Development: Students will explore professional obligations in public and private accounting and the need for continuous learning as accounting standards and our business environment evolve. * Foundational Knowledge in Accounting: Students will learn and be able to apply accounting standards related to creating financial statements and accounting for cash; receivables; inventory; property, plant and equipment; and intangible assets.

**Note: The book store has packages available with a soft cover text and the Wiley Plus supplement. This will most likely be the least expensive option for you. Currently, both of these are required for ACCTG 472 as well.

Notes:
1: The final exam is cumulative.
2. A number of quizzes will be given. Some quizzes will be given in-class and some will be administered on-line. The lowest quiz grade will be dropped.
3. Participation does not mean attendance. You must be present to earn participation credit, but just showing up to class does not ensure credit. In most classes, a short quiz on the reading, completion of a problem in your class groups, or another written or oral exercise will be required to earn participation credit. No make-ups will be given on participation assignments, but 1-2 grades will be dropped at the end of the semester to allow for an absence.
A required current event post and substantive replies to two (2) posts on a class discussion board are included in the participation grade. Each student will be required to summarize for the class an article from current press that relates to a topic covered in class. Failure to complete the discussion board posts will result in a maximum participation grade of 75%.
4. Homework due dates will be announced via WileyPlus. All homework must be complete before the beginning of the class period so that we can review answers in class if necessary. Late homework submitted on WileyPlus can earn up to 50% credit.

Violation of these standards is a serious matter. ALL violations, however “minor”, will be prosecuted through formal university channels.

Course Policies:
1. Calculators: Calculators are allowed on exams, but you may not use a cell phone as a calculator. Please bring a simple (non-graphing) calculator for exams.

2. Classroom Decorum: I understand that you may need to have your cell phone on vibrate during class for emergencies, but please do not text or take calls during class. Please make every effort to arrive on time and stay for the entire class session.

3. Missed exams, quizzes, and other assignments: If you miss an exam, quiz, or other assignment, a make-up opportunity will only be given at the discretion of the instructor. If you know ahead of time that you will miss an exam or quiz, let me know in advance so we can schedule a make-up. Even if you will be out unexpectedly please notify me in advance if an exam or quiz is scheduled. Participation assignments may not be made up except in extreme circumstances.

4. Email: Please check the course website and email via ANGEL regularly for announcements and emails regarding this class. Your PSU email account (through ANGEL) will be used for course communication. If you do not use this email account regularly, be sure to set it up such that you will receive these messages in one way or another. If you don’t anticipate checking your ANGEL course mail regularly, you can set it up so that course emails also appear in your PSU email account. You are responsible for any information (changes to the course schedule, clarifications of assignments, etc.) that is distributed through this venue. If I have an emergency, I will notify you as soon as possible through this system. Please check it on a regular basis.

Snow Days

If the College because of weather conditions cancels a class, the class will be made up on the first available Saturday at 9:15 a.m. following the missed class or at an alternative time agreed on by instructor and students.
Tips for Success: 1. Watch the posted lecture videos before class. These cover lecture materials that will not be repeated in class.

2. We will follow the text very closely, so I recommend reading each chapter before it’s covered in class. If time permits, taking notes and jotting down any questions you might have would also be helpful. Short comprehension quizzes on the chapter material may be given at the beginning of class as part of your participation grade.

3. The more problems you do, the better your grade will be. The assigned homework is important and if there’s something you’re having trouble with, I recommend completing extra problems from the book on that topic. Problems on exams may not look exactly like homework problems, but will require you to apply the same accounting principles in a different setting. Additional solved problems will be available from several sources as discussed in class.

4. Ask for help. Help is available from many sources including your group members, the learning center, and me. Please don’t hesitate to come to my office hours, set up an appointment outside of office hours, or send me an email.

5. Start the semester strong. The rest of this course and ACCTG472 will build heavily on the material in the first 3 chapters of the text. If you’re having trouble, please get help and put in extra time early on to master this important material.

6. Come to class. I will use class time to mostly work problems and to help you work problems. Coming to class prepared and working hard on problems in the classroom will benefit you immensely.
