In today’s world technology is continuously making advancements. However, the process of advancing doesn’t necessarily mean that we will completely change the way we do things but perhaps just update the way we do them. With a shortage of cadavers and the expense it takes to preserve them this opened the door for technology to come into medical education and advance the way in which dissection has never been seen before. Some are wondering if the new virtual dissection tables will eventually replace cadaver dissection. In this paper we will discuss the benefits and advantages that virtual dissection tables are making in not only the medical field but also the educational fields. In order to preserve a human cadaver embalming fluid, which is a mixture of chemicals is used. Usually embalming fluid contains formaldehyde, glutaraldehyde, methanol, and other solvents. Gross Anatomy classes in most medical schools will last up to three times longer than most first year courses. With this in mind the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) set guidelines for formaldehyde levels that are as low as two parts per million. This in turn has caused schools to have to install expensive million dollar ventilation systems (National Geographic, …show more content…
Trudy Van Houten states that “the human body is still the best three dimensional models we have. DO you really want to be operated on by someone who hasn’t dissected a body?” She goes on to say that she believes it is very important to have surgeons enhance their skills on human cadavers and that surgical skills are much more developed in a training course that involves cadavers. Her belief is shared by others in the medical field that strongly agrees that the use of human cadavers is as realistic as you can get. How else are you going to practice making an incision, connecting tissue, muscles, tendons, ligaments, etcetera? The surgeons are taught to maintain the same skills on a cadaver as they would a real patient. Another use for human cadavers that proves to be beneficial to the medical field is the ability to test new innovative surgical tools (National Geographic, 2016). It wouldn’t be a very marketable product if the salesperson couldn’t prove that it had actually been tested. Let’s be honest what live surgical patient is going to volunteer to test some new tool that has never been used
