In the beginning of the story, Cooper is introduced as a gifted individual in times of hardship. Just as Christ was born into a time of oppression under which his people, the Jews, were subject to unfair rule and maltreatment, Cooper is born into an oppressive futuristic environment in which his people, being mankind, are subject to mass starvation, famine, and the threat of extinction. Another trait Cooper possesses that matches Christ is his exceptional gifts starting from childhood. As a child, Christ demonstrated exceptional skills and traits that elevated him. In Christ’s life, he was an inspiration to those around him. Christ’s words of wisdom, redemption, and forgiveness inspired others to follow him and thus gained a group of followers, or disciples. Similar to Christ’s disciples were Cooper’s group of scientists. Through Cooper’s intelligence, leadership, and wisdom, he gains to trust and respect of the scientists aboard the Endurance; his “disciples”. From the moment after his baptism, Christ was convinced that he was called by a higher power, in this case, God. Christ was persuaded he had a calling from God, because God appeared to him, and spoke about him. Similar to Christ’s calling was Cooper’s calling by a higher power. The fact that the message was in binary to begin with was a clue to Cooper that it was a message intended for him. The simultaneous fact that the message appeared in his house convinced Cooper that the message was undoubtedly for him.
