...Advertisements Are Harmful to Society. Do You Agree? Nowadays, advertisements play a very important role in our society. It is everywhere wherever you go like on the street, Radio, TV…. Sometime it can be helpful, however, most of them are harmful to the people. In this essay, I will analyze some of the problems of advertisement. Problem one: distraction from important information. One reason that TV advertisements are bad for your brain is that their subject matter is almost always trivial and unimportant. On rare occasions, and add might actually contain useful information, but generally it is merely a distraction. Advertising is bad if it makes you focus on something trivial when you could be focusing on something important. The cynical advertising companies that turnout low end advertising are aware of the problem, and do everything in their power to make trivial things seem important to viewers. It should be comical when we see actors in a TV commercial acting like it matters what kind of toothpaste someone uses, but at some level your mind accepts such impossibilities as legitimate when they're presented frequently. At a minimum, such banal advertising consumes our conscious minds focus when it could be focusing on something that matters. Problem two: appeal to your mind's basest motives. Cynical advertising companies use sexually provocative ads to sell everything from lingerie to hamburgers. These ads are bad for your brain because they appeal to your minds least worthy...

...Industry Overview: Craft Breweries & Microbreweries Craft breweries and microbreweries produce beer in limited quantities when compared to large breweries (generally under 10,000 barrels per year) and usually distribute their beer within a limited geographic region. Craft breweries often specialize in specific styles of beer, and focus on providing customers a superior product, using traditional brewing techniques. Certain craft breweries sell beer directly on their premises, and are called brewpubs. Craft breweries are known to develop clever marketing strategies with limited budgets in order to connect with their target markets. Industry Overview BC In 2009, 209 breweries were identified by Statistics Canada and 49 of those establishments were located in British Columbia. However, an article by The Province estimates that by the end of 2013 there will be more than 60 independent breweries (this number includes microbreweries, nanobreweries and brew pubs). This increase in breweries is mirrored by an increase of 6.4% of microbrewery beer sales in British Columbia in March 2007 to 12.7% in March 2011. In the last two years, this number have only grown. In an article published July 3, 2013, The Province asserts that craft beer is almost at 20% of the market share for beer in British Columbia, while BC Business cites the Craft Brewers Association of British Columbia in stating that the market share is currently around 15% but that many brewers are experiencing sales growth...

...Facilities Second-hand smoke is a leading cause of lung cancer. Most smokers may not realize the harmful effects that their smoking has on the people around them. They may not understand that the smoke coming from their lit cigarette is more harmful to others than the smoke that they exhale from their lungs. If smoking were banned from public places, not only would it reduce these harmful chemicals that are affecting the innocent people, including children, that happened to be in these public places, but it could also help to reduce the amount of people who smoke in general. Many people do not understand the definition of what second hand smoking really is. According to the American Cancer Society, second hand smoke is “two forms of smoke that come from a lit cigarette.” The first form of smoke is the “sidestream smoke,” otherwise known as smoke that is emitted from the lit end of the cigarette, cigar, or pipe. Sidestream smoke has higher concentrations of chemicals that cause cancer. The second form of smoke is the smoke emitted from the smoker themselves. This is called “mainstream smoke.” Although sidestream smoke is more harmful than mainstream smoke, both cause harmful effects on those around the person smoking. Several years ago, when smoking became a fad and everyone was doing it, no one understood the unhealthy nature of the habit. The farmers and larger tobacco companies were advertising everywhere and consumers were buying it up, causing the large tobacco companies to make...

You just can’t hide from it whatever you do – it will find you, trough television, internet, newspapers, magazines, outside and inside, on packages and so on. If one seize to exist, another, more modern and successful will reappear that will have more chances to reach you. In reality, people tend to hide from most advertisements and in most cases find it irritating, but it still exists and thrives more than ever. Why is it so? Why does advertisements doesn’t care and persists of putting the ideas in our sub consciousness that we need a new, better life with a bigger television, hair shining shampoo and the newest model of Lexus? In general, where did advertising came from and why? The word advertising comes from Latin language with its original meaning being "to turn toward.“ Sociologists and psychologists believe that advertising is a cultural thing. Then advertising was only notes on clay, wooden or metal tablets which offered information about what profession was of the shop keeper or what goods did he sell. ...back with a vengeance, and so the debate has arisen whether or not people should be able to sue big tobacco companies. People not only have the right to sue, but should sue tobacco companies for a multitude of lawless acts, for pain and suffrage, and as well as for the economic losses many have suffered. The first thing that comes to my mind when I think of big tobacco companies is my beloved uncle. He tragically passed away three years ago from gun disease. My uncle Anthony had been an avid chewer since he was 16 years old. At a very early age he had become a slave to his addiction to chewing tobacco, this addiction ended his life. With the passing of my uncle I began to wonder why it is legal for any company to distribute such a harmful and potentially deadly product. Upon further investigation I found that I was not the only one who wondered this. It turns out millions of people have been suing large tobacco companies for multitude of reasons ranging from concealing evidence to murder charges. I found that these law suits have...

...organization that is relayed to a target market via mass medium (Duhan & Sandvik 2009). Mass medium can range from television, radio, music, film, etc. Advertisers utilize correspondences in an attempt to stimulate consumer acquisition and inform the target market about how the client’s product offerings can fulfill various wants and needs. All advertisers have an ethical and moral obligation to the target market and client. Moreover, they are expected to follow various laws that are regulated via the Federal Trade Commission (Ingram 2009). Despite the regulations that are in place, there are still ways that advertisers can legally act in an unethical manner. These actions include but are no limited to the content of the message, promoting harmful products (i.e tobacco and alcohol), and comparison marketing. It has been established that advertisers have an ethical responsibility to the larger community however, it is difficult for them to appease all audiences. For example, roughly 15 percent of persons who view an advertisement will dislike the ad regardless of the content (Moore 2006). Although advertisers cannot appease 15 percent of viewers, they can appease 85 percent of viewers via refraining from unethical or immoral content. This may seem like a daunting task however, it is imperative for advertisers to take responsibility for the content of their advertisements. Moreover, they should commit to utilizing ethical strategies so that society as a whole benefits (Snyder, 2008)...

This is especially true of marketing. As society becomes more concerned with the natural environment, businesses have begun to modify their behavior in an attempt to address society's "new" concerns. Some businesses have been quick to accept concepts like environmental management systems and waste minimization, and have integrated environmental issues into all organizational activities. Some evidence of this is the development of journals such as "Business Strategy and the Environment"...

...today is confronted with in the world. Smoking is known to have started as early as 1439 A.D. Rodrigo de Jerez was the first ever smoker in Europe, and the development of cigars was originated by the Native American people. In the twentieth century, cigars were advertised all over the world as a harmless, anti-stress product with little or no side effects. Smoking was eventually become widespread all over English-speaking continents and was even popular among women. As technology became more advanced, the adverse effects of smoking on human health have increased exponentially. Researchers officially declared smoking as a harmful habit that in most of the cases is fatal. D: There are many reasons why people resort to smoking; many of the choices are based on the individual’s decisions. Much of temptation to start smoking is based on the advertising propaganda carried out by cigarette manufacturers. People at home see the images of smoking people on their television screens, in newspapers, and magazines. Children are influenced by their parents and may be misled to the thinking that smoking poses no danger. Statistics show that about nine out of ten tobacco users start smoking before they are eighteen years old. Peer pressure is another main reason why teenagers choose to do things they shouldn’t do: befriending the wrong group of people who might represent a negative example. Quite often it is the friends who persuade each other to start smoking or purchase a pack...

...1. Executive Summary The primary goal for the Brita products company is to obtain faucet mounted products’ retail market share by at least 10 % in 2 years as a niche product targeting younger people aged between 18 and 44 in western U.S. while maintaining the market share of pitcher products. The main impediment for this is that PUR, number 2 brand, already has owned 74% of total faucet mounts sales in market. The solution for this can be divided into 2. One is to launch innovated faucet-mounted products to earn the market, highly preoccupied with PUR and the other one is to redirect the market towards younger people for Brita pitchers. 2. Problem analysis The most important goal is to obtain faucet mounted filter product’s market share by about 5% in the first year and increase market share by at least 10% in the second year by launching the faucet-mounts as a niche product targeting younger people(18-44), maintaining water purification market share from pitchers. Increasing market share is the primary goal over building brand equity or increasing profitability for several reasons. Firstly, in the consideration of market share, water purification market’s future looks bright as the safety of tap water is growing concern to U.S households. A 1999 survey found that 72% of all respondents seriously concerned about the quality of their households’ tap water and the number of people not caring about water quality is decreased from 47% in 1995 to 35% in 1999. Therefore, when...

...The Altria Group, Inc. Often referred to as “the house the Marlboro Man built”, The Altria Group, Inc. is the world’s largest tobacco company. Altria operates its cigarette business through the companies known as Phillip Morris USA and Philip Morris International, both of which sell Marlboro – the world’s largest selling cigarette brand since 1972 (“The Altria Group,” n.d.). This company controls about half of the US tobacco market. This is also the parent company of Kraft Foods. I chose to do a paper on this particular company because of the practices of lies and deceit that it has followed for many years. Some of the behaviors that I find socially and ethically irresponsible are that the company continually down plays the addictiveness and severe risk to health that their product can cause. Over the years the company has been under scrutiny for many different things including the practice of employing under age children to hand out cigarettes, falsifying legal and medical documents, and the paying off of political and legal leaders to accomplish the things that it wants done. This corporation has also been listed in the Wall Street Journal as Number 1 in a list of the top 10 worst places for a woman to work because of the fact that there are no women in any upper management positions and they employ nearly 75,000 people in the Philip Morris US plant alone (“Unethical Companies,” n.d.). At the annual shareholders meeting in 2011, Philip Morris International celebrated...
