Career Development of the African American Youth After reading the article, The Relationship Among Support, Ethnic Identity, Career Decision Self-Efficacy, and Outcome Expectations in African American High School Students Applying Social Cognitive Career Theory, a realization was made that cross-cultural research is going to be biased when a person brings in their own preconceived notion about race, education and careers. One thing for sure, is that there is a need for more research to be done. The barriers that African American youths endure in urban and rural surroundings go further than culture and racial socialization.
In conflict with these contextual realities, African American youth are increasingly exposed to deracialized narratives …show more content…
The authors of the article did note that a positive reaction from the people who are extremely significant in a youth’s life can assist in reversing the negative influence of racially or culturally motivated occupational stereotypes. Support from others, especially if they have suffered the same experience and survived, may be even more important when overcoming such extrinsic barriers to career choices and goals.
Second, numerous authors (Gushue G, Whitson M. 2006) have stressed the importance of racial and cultural identity development. Gushue G, Whitson M. 2006) has proposed a model that focuses on the ethnic identity development of adolescents and young adults. Ethnic identity is understood as an aspect of an individual’s general identity, describing it as “a multidimensional construct that includes feelings of ethnic belonging and pride, a secure sense of group membership, and positive attitudes toward one’s ethnic group” (Gushue G, Whitson M. 2006) Gushue G, Whitson M.
