...CHAPTER ONE 1.1 Background to the Study Health is central to the development of any human society, thus an adequate healthy society can improve the social status of the people (Akanbi, 2014). Though healthcare is a vital service, however, it is often treated from symptoms rather than the causes of the poor health. WHO (1948) affirms that, health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not mere absence of disease and infirmity. Health is a positive concept emphasizing social and personal resources, as well as physical capacities. In recent years, much evidence has been accumulated which shows just how important the planning of physical, social, and economic environment in which we live and work is to our health. Conversely, physical planning systems are the methods used by the public sector to influence the distribution of activities in spaces of various scales (Andreas and Bas, 2002). Also, it is a process intended to promote sustainable development and is defined as goingbeyond traditional land use planning to bring together and integrate policies for the development and use of land with other policies and programmes which influence the nature of places and how they function. In the developing countries, a substantial and growing population lives in or around metropolitan areas and megacities (Adesina,2007). The urban sector of any country is never static. It changes with time, in fact as the days and years go by, the urban landscape is altered...

...Perfectly Competitive Markets A firm’s decision about how much to produce or what price to charge depends on how competitive the market structure is. If the Dangote cement raise their prices by 5%, there will be a small reduction in the quantity of cements demanded. If the conoil gas station raises its gasoline prices by 5%, there will be a huge reduction in the gas demanded. In a very competitive market like the local gasoline market, a single station has very little choice in what price to charge. If the station is busy there is no reason to lower the price, but if it raises its price by 10 cents a gallon, it will have almost no customers. We will study the extreme case of perfect competition, where firms are “price takers.” In a perfectly competitive market, (i) there are many buyers and sellers, so each buyer or seller is a price taker, (ii) all sellers supply the same, identical product. This is the model of supply and demand. If a seller could influence the price, it would not be acting according to a supply curve. In the long run, we also require that (iii) firms can freely enter or exit the market. Revenue of a Competitive Firm For a competitive firm, the price it receives does not depend on the quantity it chooses to sell. Marginal revenue equals the price of its output. For example, if the price is $6, then the total revenue of selling 10 units is $60 and the total revenue of selling 11 units is $66. Marginal revenue, ªTR/ªQ = (66-60)/(11-10)...

...African Personality Opposing Colonialism Mykell Trunnell May 1, 2012 A number of individuals came to prominence in as political activists in the early twentieth century. In Nigeria, Herbert Macaulay founded the Nigerian National Democratic Party in about 1923, which advocated an independent Lagos government, higher education with compulsory primary education attendance, and the Africanization of the civil service, and non-discrimination in the development of private economic enterprise. Macaulay was one of the first leaders of the Nigerian opposition to British colonial rule. He formed the NNDP as a result of a new constitution being formed in 1922 providing limited franchise elections in Lagos and Calabar. He worked as a private surveyor and a journalist and in eventually became the editor in chief of a political newspaper, the Lagos Daily News. Herbert Macaulay was arrested twice for writing articles criticizing the Colonial Government. Macaulay opposed almost every attempt by the Crown to increase their hold on Lagos and the surrounding region in Nigeria. As a result of his anti-colonialism works, he became well known in the local political movement in Lagos and was sent to England by the King of Lagos, Oba Esugbayi Eleko, as a representative in a land dispute. While in London, Macaulay attempted to assert the authority of Oba Esugbayi Eleko. While this did not persuade the Crown to return lands to Oba Esugbayi Eleko, the British did appoint Macaulay as a representative...

Western American culture also helped Ishmael and his friends cope with the war and survive as a child soldier. When Ishmael was a soldier he said that the children watched movies such as Rambo to help them feel at ease so that they could raid villages. Upon raiding one of the villages, Ishmael’s friend was nicknamed “Little Rambo” for the stealth murders he committed. “Alhaji grabbed the guard’s mouth and sliced his neck with his bayonet” (p. 143). ...CHAPTER ONE 1.1 INTRODUCTION Terrorist attacks are on the rise in Nigeria, which are the increased activities of Boko Haram over the past year. Bombings, kidnappings, and other violent activities of Boko Haram prevent many Nigerians from feeling safe. Boko Haram is a well-known agent of destruction in Nigeria. Even a casual observer who doesn’t live in Nigeria has likely heard of Boko Haram’s recent 2014 kidnappings of hundreds of children—mostly girls—from schools and villages in northern Nigeria. On the night of 14-15 April 2014, about 276 Chibok school girls were kidnapped by the Boko Haram. These girls were between 17 to 18 years according to a source. They were secondary school students at Government Secondary School, Chibok, Borno State, Nigeria. Only God knows the nature of what is in-between the legs of the female students at the moment. In the northern part of the country, students cannot complete their studies because of the looming threat of kidnapping and murder. More than any other issue in Nigeria today, the greatest concern has been the security condition of the country. Almost on a daily basis, there are accounts of several security threats arising from armed robberies, assassinations, armed militancy and banditry, kidnapping, bombings and of recent, the blood-let from a religious sect called the Jaamatus Alhus Sunnah Lid Daawatis Wal Jiliad (otherwise called Boko Harm) who say they are opposed to Western education and are ready to attack every vestige of...

...Saving Mr Ugwu The short story „Saving Mr. Ugwu“ is written by Lin Anderson in 2012. The main character is Mr. Ugwu, a black man, but he feels like he is a white western man. The main plot is about him and the changes in his life. The story deals with equality and different cultures. Mr. Ugwu is the main character and the story is from a third person narrator, with focus on Mr. Ugwu. He is a black guy, but he feels as a white man. He and his family live in the bush in Nigeria. He belongs to the Christian Igbos, this one of the biggest tribes in Nigeria. Mr. Ugwu doesn’t think well about the bush, but he reminds himself every time that the company has been good to him, so he would do whatever it takes to keep his job. He doesn’t feels that the bush is his home, and he wants to go back to Lagos. Every time it rains he feels a bit like he is “home”, he probably thinks about Lagos. Mr. Ugwu is not really happy with his life, “he becomes angry. Angry at the Hausa, angry at his wife, angry at his Baturi neighbour, all of whom treat him like a dog.” In this quote from the text can you see that Mr. Ugwu isn’t really happy with his life, although he have a good position in his job, and earned good money even though that he wasn’t white.
