You cannot expect a child to pass a swim test if you intentionally move him to a pool where there is no water. Although a swim test may not relate to inequality in education, the concept of students being expected to be successful in school while not having the resources they need to learn is absurd and is discussed in the articles “Inequality in the American Education System,” by William H. Schmidt, and “Inequality in Education,” by Kevin D. Williamson. These articles discuss how inequality in education exists because of low tracking for students, weak learning resources, and lack of proper nutrition. Social inequality in our country is causing many issues for our education and economy. With the intention to solve all these issues, our society must put an end to social inequality and provide equality for everyone, which will also result in a better economy.
Underprivileged students commonly attend schools that receive less funding than those attended by well-off students, therefore those who attend lower income schools are taught with weaker content, resources, and materials. As a result, “students placed in classrooms with lower level topic coverage see their chances to move on and take more advanced courses in high school and college severely limited -- once placed in a lower track, it is very unlikely that they will ever catch up” (Schmidt, 1). Low tracking fails to provide students with the assistance they need to move to a higher track. Underprivileged students in low tracks lose self-esteem and motivation, while expectations for their performance decrease. In order to put an end to tracking, an alternative would be to start programs aimed to helping students catch up to speed, instead of permanently separating them from other students and teaching them a secondary curriculum.
Moreover, lower-income students are disadvantaged because they are exposed to

Analysis Of The Devil In The White City By Erik Larson

...insightful look into what it was truly like living in Chicago in the 19th century, showing the power struggle over good and evil in these confusing times. The book follows two, at first, seemingly unrelated storylines. The first is the building of the World’s Fair in Chicago in 1893, the other about a serial killer known as H.H. Holmes. The book begins with a prologue of a Mr. Daniel H. Burnham aboard a ship, the Olympic, with his wife, Margaret in 1912. As Burnham looks back, remembering sad accounts of friends who helped him in the great accomplishment of building the fair, we as readers sense that something bad happened earlier on in his life, probably during the times of the fair. Burnham, of course, as the...

...Conor Richard 1st Period Mrs. Bryant LOVE OR HATE Hate is stronger then love because when there is no love present hate shows more than anything. In the books , examples were everywhere , of peopling showing hatred. Hate is present everywhere in this world not only in these books. In “Briar Rose” by Jane Yolen there were many prime examples of hatred being shown by not only a few people , but millions. The Germans , Jewish , and Polish , and gays were the groups. The main two were the Jewish and Germans who displayed so much hatred that it led to millions of deaths. Love was obviously not present in these times. Another reason for my belief that hate is stronger emotion than love , was in the book “Night” by Elie Wiesel. The best example shown was towards the end of the book. Elie lost all the love he had for everyone , including his dad. He watched his father die and let it happen to keep his belongings for his self. In “The Chosen” by Chaim Potock the love started off strong at the beginning then hatred over powered it. Especially during the baseball game. The players wanted to kill each other rather than playa fair game of baseball! When Reb banned his son from seeing Rueben was also hate being shown by all 3 characters. Although love plays a role in these books , I found that hate played a greater role. No matter the reasoning , people will always show some sort of hate towards the...

John Keats When I Have Fears

...Pressured by the finite time on earth, Keats’ speaker expresses a longing to know the eternal ideals of love and fame before he ceases to exist. Although the poem is expressed in one breathless sentence, the speaker’s anxiety is resolved; the fear of not achieving these ideals becomes, when the speaker is alone and thinks, insignificant. In the first quatrain of the lyric poem, the pensive speaker expresses his worries about dying before fulfilling his potential as a writer: When I have fears that I may cease to be Before my pen has glean’d my teeming brain, Before high piled books, in charact’ry, Hold like rich...

Litertaure and Civilization

...The Jacobean Age of English Literature coincides with the reign of James I, 1603 - 1625. During this time the literature became sophisticated, sombre, and conscious of social abuse and rivalry. The Jacobean Age produced rich prose and drama as well as the King James translation of the Bible. Shakespeare and Jonson wrote during the Jacobean Age, as well as John Donne, Francis Bacon, and Thomas Middleton. The Caroline Age of English Literature coincides with the reign of Charles I, 1625 - 1649. The writers of this age wrote with refinement and elegance. This era produced a circle of poets known as the "Cavalier Poets" and the dramatists of this age were the last to write in the Elizabethan tradition. The Commonwealth Period, also known as the Puritan Interregnum, of English Literature includes the literature produced during the time of Puritan leader Oliver Cromwell. This period produced the political writings of John Milton, Thomas Hobbes' political treatise Leviathan, and the prose of Andrew Marvell. In September of 1642, the Puritans closed theatres on moral and religious grounds. For the next eighteen years the theatres remained closed, accounting for the lack of drama produced during this time period. Practical View 1. What light through yonder window breaks? 2 It is the east, and Juliet is the sun. 3 Arise, fair sun, and kill the envious moon, 4 Who is already sick and pale with grief, 5 That thou, her maid, art far more fair than she. 6 Be not her maid since she is envious. 7 Her vestal livery is but sick and green, 8 And none but fools do wear it. Cast it off. 9 It is my lady. Oh, it is my love. 10 Oh, that she knew she were! 11 She speaks, yet she says nothing. What of that? 12 Her eye discourses. I will answer it.— 13 I am too bold. 'Tis not to me she speaks. 14 Two of the fairest stars in all the heaven, 15 Having some...

...Alice Walker, Celie, Nettie, and Mr. are developed gradually throughout the novel and their actions all seem to be intertwined and what happens to one of them effects one if not both of the other two. There is a strong relationship between Celie and Nettie not just because they are siblings but because Nettie is one out of two people Celie loves, and this doesn't exist between Celie and any other of her siblings. There are various things that bring these two even closer, one being the discovery that they both come from a different father which Celie discover from a letter from Nettie which reads "...and I pray with all my heart that you get this letter, if none of the others. Pa is not our Pa." (182) and the one they thought was there flesh and blood father was actually only their step father. This brings them closer for it is so important and they are each other’s direct relatives for both parents are dead and they do not have any other brothers or sisters. The second point is that they keep in contact when Nettie is traveling to and from Africa. This is more or less an escape for Celie for she does not really have anyone except for Shug that she loves so the letters are a way for Celie to keep not only with Nettie but also her two children that she has only seen for a for a couple of days in her entire life. So the main bond between Nettie and Celie is one of love, and they demonstrate this by constantly trying to stay in touch even though they don't know if the...

On My First Son Explaination

...Lines 1-2 Farewell, thou child of my right hand, and joy; My sin was too much hope of thee, loved boy. * The poem begins with the speaker saying "farewell" to his child. * The speaker also says his "sin" (or mistake) was that he had "too much hope" for his son. He implies that there is some connection between his love for the boy and the boy's death. That's odd. * The phrase "child of my right hand" is also kind of funny. It implies that the speaker's son was born from his right hand (weird, huh?). Or maybe this implies something about the speaker's favoritism toward his first-born? (Think of the phrase "my right-hand man.")  * "Child of my right hand" also would indicate that the speaker's son is lucky. The right is always the good side; the left is the bad or sinister side. (In Latin, a language Jonson knew well, the word for left side is the same word that gives us sinister in English.) * As it turns out, Ben Jonson's first son was named Benjamin (just like his father), and in Hebrew Benjamin means "son of right hand." Okay, so maybe "child of my right hand" isn't so weird after all. But how many people really know what Benjamin means in Hebrew? Sheesh! * Finally, read these lines aloud. Go ahead. Nobody's looking. Notice anything? These lines are in a very famous rhythm: iambic pentameter. If you've read any Shakespeare (a friend of Jonson's), you should be picking up what we're putting down.  * Basically, an iamb is a combination of one unstressed...

According to Ephron, books have been the only constant throughout a life filled with years of love, sorrow, and new couches; she recalls times of personal upheaval and the specific books that first comforted her with their dazzling plots and dreamy characters, then prompted her discovery of unhappy or exhausted...

Ifrs vs Gaap

...world uses IFRS or “International Financial Reporting Standards.” While both systems are more than viable, there are many subtle differences between the two. These differences can affect companies in a variety of different ways especially if IFRS becomes a mandatory practice for the United States and thus, all accounting information changes would have to be retroactive. Depreciation and Fair Value One large difference between GAAP and IFRS is the aspect of component depreciation. According to Marie Leone from CFO.com, component depreciation means that companies must “recognize and depreciate equipment components separately if the components can be physically separated from the asset and have different useful lifespans” (Leone, 2010). This method of evaluating assets is required by IFRS but not by GAAP. While this practice is allowed to be conducted by GAAP it does not have the same requirement that IFRS does. Being able to evaluate all of the components for an asset would provide a more accurate figure for better or worse. This leads into how an asset can be valued. Both the IASB and FASB have agreed that streamlining the process of evaluating an asset at the measurement of “fair value” is for the best. Both entities have agreed...
