Analysis #4 In this short story, Ozick the American author uses specific techniques when defining words. Instead of using similar words and phrases to define the words she chose to use different methods. These techniques are unique but still prove to be very applicable. As an author, using the most common kinds of procedures are not always most effective. Using what you know to be best for you is what you should ultimately choose to use.
Instead of using common techniques, Ozick chose to compare two different things in order to define the word excellence. She chose to compare both her perfectionistic lifestyle and her mother’s hectic way of life. Her mother just tried to accomplish as much as possible without necessarily paying to detail. She would get a lot done, but it wouldn’t always be quality work. Ozick mentioned that her mother’s work would look good from afar, but visually there was always some kind of defect to her work. On the contrary, Ozick was a perfectionist and had to have everything perfect without flaw. Both lifestyles conflicted with each other.
Based upon their lifestyles, you can depict that both individuals had contradicting definitions of the word excellence. Both had dissimilar lifestyles, and different views of what good quality work is. Excellence to Ozick was perfect un-flawed work; and her mother’s definition was the most accomplished work the better. Ozick preferred quality, and her mother favored quantity.
In order to define terms you also could use the Greek and Latin word stems. You could go back through the history of the word or words. Knowing the Greek and Latin definitions you could learn about the words.
If Ozick had only used one word to define the meaning of her points she wouldn’t get her point across as well. The way she went about defining her points was very beneficial because she used broad explanations. She showed

We find that students are often confused about which variable is independent and which is dependent in a regression model. For example, in Triple A’s problem, clarify which variable is X and which is Y. Emphasize that the dependent variable (Y ) is what we are trying to predict based on the value of the independent (X) variable. Use examples such as the time required to drive to a store and the distance traveled, the totals number of units sold and the selling price of a product, and the cost of a computer and the processor speed. Teaching Suggestion 4.2: Statistical Correlation Does Not Always Mean Causality. Students should understand that a high R2 doesn’t always mean one variable will be a good predictor of the other. Explain that skirt lengths and stock market prices may be correlated, but raising one doesn’t necessarily mean the other will go up or down. An interesting study indicated that, over a 10-year period, the salaries of college professors were highly correlated to the dollar sales volume of alcoholic beverages (both were actually correlated with inflation). Teaching Suggestion 4.3: Give students a set of data and have them plot the data and manually draw a line through the data. A discussion of which line is “best” can help them appreciate...

...improvement and future success of this company moving into the public market. In order to properly perform an assessment of the LBJ Company, there first had to be some set of standards or regulations that outline the internal controls and proper procedures for companies and businesses to adhere to for financial reporting. As it turns out internal control is a key component of Foreign Corrupt Practices Act(FCPA) of 1977 and the Sarbanes-Oxley Act(SOX) of 2002 which required companies to follow this set of internal controls. This list of internal controls is as follows: 1). Conduct its business in an orderly and efficient manner, 2). Safeguard its assets and resources, 3). Deter and defect errors, theft, and fraud, 4). Being a supervisor means being in a role of leadership, logic, common sense, and decision making for yourself, the employees, and for the company. The “in Basket” debate and discussion gives us and our fellow classmates the opportunity to see if we can successfully delegate out certain tasks as a supervisor at a fictitious company. The discussion between me and fellow classmates was a great one and it appeared as though everyone agreed on everything accept for different incidents. The only two incidents where I came across disagreement were in regards to task number 3, and task number 4. Profile of Working Students and It' S Implication on Academic Standing

...CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION Not all people are given the chance to have a quality education especially in the Philippines because it is now complicated. That’s why having the chance to study and choosing the course should not be compared to some thing like for an example buying a dress for a special occasion and when realization comes into your mind that you don’t want it, you’ll return it or maybe get your money back. No, this isn’t right, because in college life, you have to treat every second as an important detail of your life. You should not waste every moment in it. So choosing the course which you think fits your capabilities is very important. Studying a specific course in college is not only about paying the fees rather the most important things here are the time and effort spent. Money, time and effort are the most precious things in one’s life and once it is used or spent, it’s hard to gain again or worst you may never have it at all. So the time these are wasted for nothing, for sure the blame for this mistake will be felt truly. When looking at the profile of those students who are working and at the same time is studying, you would notice that they never dare wasting their time. For them, every second counts. Make an observation and you will find out that almost all of the working students are working too hard to finish their studies. For them, wasting their effort, time and money is such a big mistake. OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY The objective of studying...

Jamie Turner : Case Analysis - 4 Problems

...1. How did Turner get himself into this particular predicament? Solution: The following reasons form the root cause of Turner being so indecisive about his position at MLI towards the end of the case: Firstly, Jamie Turner earlier worked at Wolf River, where departments such as control, budgeting, planning and similar tasks were well supported. When he was allowed autonomy and was all on his own, he could not get enough time to prepare himself for all the challenges that were posed for his position and he ended making hasty decisions based on his prior experience. Secondly, his differences with Cardullo regarding their views on the cash flow problem, pricing halogen bulbs below the break-even point with reduced margins, and their other arguments left Turner in distaste and anger. Turner’s strategy of reducing production cost and lesser margins did not go well with Cardullo who wanted higher margins for his products. Moreover, Turner was initially indecisive about joining MLI given the financial situation of the company and other complexities that a merger had created. Also, he was not really keen to go into industrial marketing. He did not weigh the positives and negatives completely before accepting the offer at MLI and started repenting his decision after just a few months into the company. All these things along with the problem of dealing with Julie Chin, lead to this particular predicament. 2.  What did Pat Cardullo and Jamie Turner each initially bring to the situation...

Guns Germs And Steel Chapter 4 Analysis

...First, in chapter one I learned that competition is very important in the growth of a company. This is true because it motivates them to create better quality goods or services at a cheaper price or lower rate, with the end goal of attracting more customers. However, in some cases rival companies have been known to take the competition too far by focusing on ruining the other company rather than making their own better. Second, in chapter two I learned that one of the keys to a successful business is that it develops and keeps a good ethical image. For example, the issue of environmental protection has been given increasing importance since the late 20th century. Therefore, governments around the world have begun to pass laws to protect the environment from harmful practices such as improper disposal of medical waste. In response, several companies have created executive positions for a person to help them achieve its goals in an effective and environmentally responsible way. Third, in chapter three I learned that international trade has several barriers, such as economic, ethical, legal, and political barriers. For example, a major legal barrier for the US is all the laws and regulations that have been set in place to govern international trade. Another obstacle companies engaging in international trade must maneuver around is the differences in American laws and any other country's laws concerning currency, taxes, patents, and quota limits. Fourth, in chapter four I learned...

Guess Your Card

...explain to me that in this game each of us in turn will blindly draw three cards from a partial deck of cards. This deck has had all cards above 9 removed, and for this game’s purposes aces are only equal to 1. Without looking at my cards I am to place them facing out on my forehead so the other players can clearly see the cards. Each of the other players is to do the same. The object of the game is to guess which cards you have on your own head using logic to solve the problem. Players draw question cards that reveal information about player cards, and the first to guess their cards based on the information revealed wins the game. My brother Andy has the cards 1, 5, and 7 showing on his forehead. His wife Belle has 5, 4, and 7. My girlfriend Carol has the cards 2, 4, and 6. Andy is selected to draw the first question card, and it asks if he sees two or more players who’s cards sum to the same value. Andy answers affirmatively. With this information I know that I must have cards that equal either 12 or 16. I know this because Belle’s cards sum to 16 and Carol’s cards sum to 12. Since Andy sees two of us with cars of the same value I am able to confirm that my sum must match either Belle’s or Carol’s. At this point none of us are able to conclude anything else about our cards, so Belle draws the next question card. Belle’s question reads “Of the five odd numbers [1, 3, 5, 7, and 9] how many different odd numbers do you see?” Belle answers that she sees all five the odd numbers. I...
