Analysis of an Agatha Christie’s Essay Effective essays are organized in a way that allows the reader to follow easily and stay engaged, and that is how I felt while reading The Enduring Appeal of Agatha Christie essay. By including just, the right amount of information (in most areas), the essay was very well written. I mentioned “in most areas” because in some instances, I felt like the author was leading readers into interesting stories but then abruptly the story would end or the essay would just transition to a different topic, which can leave the readers a bit confused. The essay was overall very well organized following the basic format of essay writing: starting with a short and precise introductory paragraph to grab the reader’s attention, then three body paragraphs with supporting details and a strong concluding paragraph to make the reader believe the thesis of the essay. To begin with the author started the essay by posing a question to the reader. This question was supposedly the hook of this essay. In my opinion the hook was not really effective because as the reader it did not grab my attention and make me want me to continue reading. I feel like this was one of the areas which would leave a reader confused. I personally did not like how it started with a question but it helped to set up the structure for rest of the introduction. The rest of the introduction revolved around the upside down pyramid by stating a vague idea and as it continues the content gradually became more precise. Which then lead to the thesis statement which shaped the purpose of the essay and all the arguments that will be conveyed, later in the body paragraphs. Next, the body paragraph is the section where the author lists all three of the arguments separately and with supporting details to prove the essay’s thesis to the reader. The author nearly perfected this part of the essay. Almost each body paragraph followed the point, proof and comment idea. The author stated a point then integrated a proof or quotation and lastly comments on how that proof or quote relates back to the thesis in the same order that it was stated in the introduction.
In the first body paragraph the author starts talking and describing Agatha’s memorable characters but in this paragraph, I felt as if the author could have provided the reader with some more detail about why the characters are so memorable instead of just stating one trait about them. For example, when the author mentioned the character, Ariadne Oliver, as a potential alter ego to Agatha Christie. I found that very interesting and was eager to know more about it but instead the paragraph ended and the essay moved on to the settings of novels. Next in the second body paragraph, the author discusses and gives us examples of Agatha Christie’s delightfully interesting settings which were explored in detail. Lastly in the third body paragraph, the author states his or her opinion on Christie’s morality and describes it in a very appealing way which makes the reader, want to believe them. All three of these paragraphs did a great job in persuading the readers and supporting the authors thesis.
Lastly, the concluding paragraph is a very strong and straight forward finish for the essay. The conclusion is written in the opposite format of the introductory paragraph following the upright triangle structure. The idea starts of strong and as it continues the content becomes very broad. The author did that by restating the thesis in a slightly different way then gradually makes the ideas broader of why Agatha Christie’s work is among one of the best.
In conclusion, I found the The Enduring Appeal of Agatha Christie’s essay to be a very significant essay that portrays the message it was bound to express. It was expressed with solid arguments and great supporting details. It was a very well-worded and persuasive essay. As a reader, it is safe to say that Agatha Christie’s work is truly brilliant and will be continued to endure in the future. These are the reasons why this essay was very effective.
