On August 22, 1964 in Atlantic City, New Jersey, Fannie Lou Hamer presented an emotional speech at the Democratic National Convention. Fannie Lou Hamer speech was given in front of a small audience, and later televised nationally. Around the time that Fannie Lou Hamer spoke at the convention, blacks were beat, mistreated and killed just for trying to register to vote. This is something that Fannie Lou Hamer knew too well, because she herself had experienced the inhumane treatment. As a result of her experiences, Fannie Lou Hamer became an advocate for expanding black voter registration and challenging the legitimacy of the state's all-white Democratic Party.
