Answer:
Pilate Dead’s family and Macon Dead’s family have two completely different relationships with each other. Pilot’s family is much more welcoming and open with each other. Throughout the chapter, the reader could tell how much they care for one another and by how much time they spend with each other. Unlike Macon’s family, Macon is never home and rarely talks to his wife Ruth. Also, he is constantly rude to his youngest son, Milkman, and to his wife. In the beginning of the chapter, he yelled at Ruth for trying to help him with directions, and the reader could tell that he was very much annoyed by Milkman when he needed to use the bathroom.
The Packard is being used to symbolize the Dead’s family being trapped in materialism. The Dead’s house is explained to be more “prison than place” where the family clearly only care about what others would think and there is no joy in their lives. Ruth only goes on the car rides to show off her “happy family”, Macon Dead drives to show off his wealth, Lena and Corinthian go for the boys, and Milkman dreads the entire ride and tries to get out of it.

This Passage intrigues me because it shows how very different Pilates family is compared to Macon Dead’s family. You can tell by this passage that their family have a very close bond with each other and that they are willing to do anything for one another. The closeness with each other is much different than the closeness Pilate has with her brother, Macon Dead, whereas they wont even talk to each
