In the book “Between the World and Me” by Ta-Nehisi Coates, a large emphasis was put on how the oppression of black life has impacted him as well as others in the black community. In a letter to his son, Coates begins with his experience on a talk show where he was asked about his body, to which he responds honestly that American history is to blame. He feels as though there is a palpable distinction between the hosts’ body and his own as a result of the history of oppression black people faced at the hand of white america. Ultimately, the most prevailing message of this book is that the success and progress of white america was made possible at the expense of black bodies.
