...McCarthyism and The Second Red Scares impact on Media in the 1950-60s decades (Research and Analysis Paper) In 1950, fewer than 50,000 Americans out of a total US population of 150 million were members of the Communist Party(Gilder Lehrman). However following WWII the the time period of the 1950-1970 was marked as a period of mass fear of Communism. American fears of internal communist infiltration reached Its highest point since the First Red Scare of the 1920-30s. Government organizations investigated millions of americans, “asking what books and magazines they read, what unions and civic organizations they belonged to, and whether they went to church” (Gilder Lehrman). This time period was also marked by the major shift and blacklisting of celebrities primarily in show business. One of the people who took full advantage of the mass hysteria was Senator Joseph McCarthy from Wisconsin. McCarthy began his crusade by giving a speech at the Women’s Republican Club of Wheeling, in West Virginia, where he stated that he had a list of over 220 confirmed communists living in the US. The numbers of this statement dropped over the years as people began to watch him more closely. However this didn’t stop him from rising to more power, after the Republicans regained a majority in the senate, McCarthy took control of a subcommittee, and performed investigations on government agencies. Other Cold War “activists” consisted of Minnesota Senator Hubert Humphrey, union leader Walter Reuther...

...Juan Marcos Romero ENG 108 Armory Kaiser 27 February 2012 A Better Life Movie Analysis In the movie A Better Life, the Main Character Carlos Galindo is an undocumented immigrant from Mexico who started working as a day labor worker when he first arrived in the country, however he has had steady work from Blasco Martinez who owns a gardening business which he tries to convince Carlos to buy from him as he says he is moving. The idea of being self employed is very appealing to Carlos but he knows he can never afford to do so and the risk of getting caught and deported is very high. Carlos has a son Luis who is reluctant to go to school on a daily basis and gets into trouble as he is influenced by his friends who are part of the South Central gang life style. Carlos and his wife came from Jalisco which is a state in Mexico which is primarily made up of several small villages where "Charros" or Mexican cowboys would get married and head north to start a new life in America. Carlos believed that life in America would be simple in which if you worked hard opportunities would present themselves and you could be happy, that unfortunately was not the case and Carlos's wife ended up leaving him alone with their young son Luis. The main difficulties that Carlos and Luis face are that they live in a rough neighborhood in south central Los Angeles and even though Carlos has what seems to be a steady job with Blasco, Carlos is unable to save up the money needed to move to a better...

...Essay II A The following paper is an analysis of the three texts “Why They Serve”, “A soldier’s story: War affects whole family” and “The Making of a Marine Officer”. In the paper will be discussed the different opinions and views on the military and serving the army. Why people are willing to risk their lives to serve their country and what motivates people to join the army despite the consequences and the hazardous drawbacks. Give an outline of the various views on serving the army presented in the three texts. There are a lot of different opinions on serving the army. People are different; have different values, norms and we all have a diverse view on our nation and on war. Some of these views and opinions are expressed in the three texts. Sarah Palin describes her son’s deployment with the army and career as a soldier with great pride: “That day I was just one of thousands of proud but wary American women. I was the mom of a young soldier being sent overseas to defend our country.” She was proud to have a son who was eager to fight for his country. I believe she was even prouder because she was vice-presidential running mate – she was in the running to become one of the highest ranked females in America. She was very patriotic and believed in America as the greatest nation. This is shown in the text “Why they serve”: “But America isn’t just another country, it’s an exceptional country. We are the only country in the history of the world that was founded not on...

...Rhetorical Analysis Scott Schmidt ENG 112 1/31/15 Robert Zacny Rhetorical Analysis Just picture that you are flipping through your favorite magazine, and all of a sudden an advertisement catches your eye. In the ad, a family stand together, smiling, Christmas tree in the background, each one holding their very own Winchester rifle; well everyone, of course, except mom. Could you imagine the lawsuits that would ensue, (no pun intended)? This particular ad was used in a Sears Catalogue book. My personal interest in guns, coupled with the absolute absurdity of this advertisement, is why I chose this particular ad to study. The following is a rhetorical analysis of this 1937 advertisement placed in a Sears Catalogue. How this ad appeals to the logos, ethos, and pathos are topics this analysis will further examine. This ad was printed in 1937, which was a very dark and dangerous time for America. The nation was facing a great depression, American icon Amelia Earhart disappeared, and the Hindenburg is blown up while docking, killing dozens and completely destroying American’s faith in passenger carrying airships, thus; successfully destroying the airship era. People were desperate, afraid, and for many, their futures were, at best, utterly uncertain. In the ad, a husband, his wife, and their three sons are standing in a group together depicting a red wall behind them. Part of a Christmas tree can be seen peeking on the lower right corner of the frame, while the dad holds...

SWOT Analysis (pgs. 9-10) I. Introduction In 1943 Sweden, a Swedish 17-year-old man named Ingvar Kamprad established IKEA. IKEA stands for Ingvar Kamprad Elmtaryd and Agunnaryd. Elmtaryd is the family farm’s name and Agunnaryd is the name of the village where the farm is located. It started off as being a retailer for selling matches, seeds and fish and Kamprad slowly added items such as ballpoint pens, furniture and other household designs. As he started expanding his product portfolio, Kamprad started adopting business strategies such as selling his products via mail order, using a milk truck as transportation, making a furniture catalog and hiring a furniture designer. This designer was Gillis Lundgren who also came up with the self-assembly, flat-packaging technique. This flat-packaging design allowed for more efficient transportation as it cut down on unnecessary space and prevented product damage. The self-assembly technique Lundgren had developed allowed IKEA to essentially forward integrate, cutting out outside retailers. Big retailers responded by turning manufacturers against IKEA thus preventing IKEA from doing business with any supplier. After the pressure IKEA experienced in Sweden, they were forced to search for suppliers outside of Sweden. Kamprad’s search eventually took him to Poland...

...Culture Clash in the Movie Gua Sha Analysis A Chinese immigrant (Datong Xu) has great accomplishment in his career and a loving family, however, just because of a trivial matter, his life has gone differently. His father has come along to America to visit him. Dennis, who is the child of Datong, feels sick and undergoes a traditional Chinese treatment- Gua Sha by his grandfather. The treatment leaves marks on the child’s back and it is found accidentally by doctors and so, Datong is accused of child abuse. A number of culture clashes have been brought up in the movie. It is not the clash between Gua Sha and Western culture, it is the cultural values of Chinese and Westerners that clash. First of all, the clash between Americans and Chinese is conspicuous, particularly, their different perspective towards the concept of hitting children. At the beginning of the movie, Dennis gets in a fight with an American child who is the son of John (Datong’s boss). Datong is really angry and he hits Dennis in front of his boss publicly. In the middle of the movie, Datong quarrels with John. John says ‘I don’t understand why you hit your son.’ Datong replies ‘I hit him to give respect to you! To give you face!’ However, it is totally inconceivable to a Westerner because a westerner would never hit his/her children just to please the boss. That is why John replies furiously ‘What a twisted Chinese logic!’ In Chinese, there is a saying that goes ‘fighting is petting, scolding is loving.’ Most...
